Ask me any questions you might have before school begins in a few days.. I have lived on campus, in South, East, and off-campus downtown. I've done a summer session. I'm work on campus. I am a student in Eberly College of Science.

Ok, so first, can I get in.unweighted GPA 3.4 1900 SAT best scores ,6 AP’s and 2 college credit courses by the time I graduate in 2010. Interested in Journalism, school paper 4yrs,local paper internships, track and cross country 3yrs,some community service.
Do you think it is necessary that I do the summer program to get in? I hear I would be starting the program 2wks after I graduate high school, which is not desirable. How long does it go?

That looks good enough for Fall semester to me. Summer is useful to more borderline types like me. :)

What is your weighted gpa? I think it’s good enough for Fall admission considering you have some AP’s to boost the unweighted gpa. The summer program is 6 weeks long.

Weighted GPA about a 3.5. According to last years bubble chart, it seems like I would only be considered if I did the Leap summer program.

Are you basing that on what other people have said here about your GPA and SAT’s? I don’t think there are any stats on who will only be accepted into the Leap program.

I’m a yellow dot on the bubble chart, so I’m assuming that I should say I would do the summer program if I want to get in.

I toss this out to anyone who wants to weigh in. I have a son going into junior year at PSU-UP and my daughter also wants to apply. The issue is her grades, and I’m looking for advice on how best to apply. SOme questions:

a. Her grades are about a 2.9 and that is due in part to a D in chemistry and a C in math this year. Her strength is in humanities and English and she’ll have honors English, AP Psych in the fall. That GPA is pretty weak for PSU-UP but…

b. Her SATs were 580 M, 640V and 590 W - right on track for PSU-UP. ANd those SATs reflect her strengths, and what she plans to do at college (NOT engineering, for example).

My questions are these:

If she applies to, say, Humanities and Language major will that enhance her chances to get in (i.e. go DUS and then figure out a true major)? (I thought I heard that they need English majors and such, and given that is her strength on her transcript maybe the grades will count less.)

What other actions can I take on the app to enhance her chances of overcoming the GPA issue? Whatr else can we do to “pull out all the stops” and give her a shot at getting in?

If she explicitly puts on the application that she is willing to start in the summer will that enhance her changes?

Lastly, anybody have any insights into PS-Altoona if UP does not work out?

Thanks in advance.

hvc…I see you didn’t get any answers here so I’ll try.
Yes, have your d apply to DUS. I have heard from numerous folks that’s it’s easier to get in.
And yes, have her apply for summer. This would also improve her chances.
Finally, make sure that she applies EARLY.
The GPA is weighted much more than the SAT so it may be a tough road. Can she work on getting her GPA up before she applies? Is the 2.9 weighted or UW?
Given that she’s not a clear winner, you will probably wait a LONG time to hear the result.
Don’t know much about Altoona. The kids around here don’t generally want to go there. But you can go for two years and then go to the main campus. And it’s close enough to go to the football games!

Thanks, toneranger. We were also at Shippensburg a week ago and liked it. Had a very nice feel. The app to PSU is in with DUS, and summer sesson box checked. It;ll be interesing. My son is a junior there and has lots of stories of weak students who got into main campus as freshmen. He thinks the difficulty of getting into PSU-UP is overrated based on personal experience.

We’ll see.

I applied for the Interdisciplinary Digital Studio major. Will I get accepted first (if I do at all) and then notified if I was accepted into the major later?

Hows the financial aid for out of state students?

^^^not very good LOL

Hows the financial aid for in state students?

^^^Not very good either! (and you would think they would have some extra money to give out since they cram kids into housing) :-)

Seriously, PSU is not known for financial aid generosity.

“Seriously, PSU is not known for financial aid generosity.”
^^^^
I’ve also heard the FA office is not very helpful.

I’ve had nothing but good experiences with the Fin Aid Office. The people I have talked to there were more than happy to walk me through all my $ options and were very happy thru the entire thing.

PSU tends to give out more aid as you advance in your academic career (like after you declare a major).

What the freak? I didn’t get extra money. I’m a junior in my major (M E) with a 3.79 gpa, and all I got was the SMART grant (I think this is federal money replacing my ACG from first two years). Do we need like a 4.0 or something?!?!

I have only a slightly higher GPA then you lil_killer and I’ve gotten more this year than last year.

“I haven’t been to any other college, but I agree. This sucks,” Sika Abbey (freshman-international relations) said of her experience with financial aid. “Ugh, it was horrible.”

Abbey was waiting with many fellow students in the Office of Student Aid in the Shields Building Tuesday.

“It’s hard to get them any other way,” Sheneik Meade (senior-crime, law and justice) said, waiting for her consultation. She noted financial aid assistants are unreachable by phone and didn’t respond to her through e-mail.
