Just got back from the SUHP and BEAR facts orientation, if anyone has any questions about how it works or how it was I'd be happy to help!

i saw you guys at the dining hall, every table was taken >_<

Hi! I have a question regarding the AP test scores. Do we have to send our scores prior to our orientation date? What if the scores have not come out yet? Should I pay the extra $8? Thanks!

If it’s any help, UCSC received AP scores. I’m pretty sure that if you told CEEB to send your scores to UCR when you took the test(s) that UCR has them already. Does UCR post your test scores on MyUCR?

how did you send your AP scores? My AP test scores haven’t come out yet.
Also, I know this question is kinda random, but do you guys get free stuff and agendas during orientation??? :D

Call 8883080013 and have your ap score and a credit card!
No agendas (I think) you get a pin and some things from clubs (I got a deck of cards) There is a raffle and you can win shirts and bottles and stuff.

If you’re in BCOE it’s a good idea to send in your AP Calc test so you can enroll in Calc and Chem

You can request your scores be sent to a college when you take the test(s) or you can order from the college board by phone. My kids did the former.

Yeah i would definitely recommend sending your AP scores before orientation, when i was there a lot of kids couldn’t schedule for the right classes because their AP calc score wasn’t in so they have to wait until it is in to register for the right class. Send the scores by either phone or sent when you took test because the classes are going to fill up quick and if you can’t register correctly until when they get the scores you will be behind.

What time does it start? Can you tell me what activities you guys did?

It may be different for you, but for our session we started around 10:30. Activities: First you meet your leader who will welcome you and you will play games with a small group of people that you will be with for the entire time. They are all relevant to your major. Then you go and watch a video in the theater welcoming you to BEAR facts and UCR. Then you will have a intro to your college (BCOE,CNAS,CHASS) once done with that you’ll watch a bunch of theater students perform social situations you may experience in college. Then you will do an activity where you stand in a big circle and they will say things such as I am christian and if you are you walk to the center it was pretty interesting. Then you have a fair where you can see all of the different clubs and organizations on campus such as Frats/sororities and clubs. THen you will have a two hour event called highlander camp where you play a bunch of games and meet a bunch of people. After that you are done with the first day and you go back to pentland where there is a dance and people are playing games and hooking up and dancing it was pretty awesome. Next day you start with a tutorial on how to use growl to register with classes and then your academic advisor will advise you on which classes you should take and they will address your individual questions. Then you register for classes and once that is done you have a lecture on living on campus. Lastly you go to the HUB for a final farewell from orientations and a welcome to UCR. Then you are free to leave. Sorry for all of the “thens”

Did you meet a lot of people in your major? What was the general mood? I don’t have any classmates going to UCR so I’m looking forward to meeting people…

Umm i didn’t meet a lot because my major is relatively small there was around 5 people in Chemical Engineering when I was there. But that’s only 1/10 of the people going I was the first session of BEAR facts. The mood was pretty exciting i thought, most of the Orientation Leaders are very excited and have been trained to get you pumped and excited for UCR. The games and the social make it seem like a fun informative camp which I thought was good on their part. I’m in the same boat as you, out of 680 kids I was the only to choose UCR, but I kind of like that because I’ve met sooo many new people. You will meet a bunch don’t worry even if your major is small the group you will be in will probably be a grab bag because we also had business majors in our group. You will make plenty of friends, on Facebook from the SUHP and BEAR facts i’ve already made 20+ new friends it’s pretty awesome! Just remember last names because trying to find and add people on Facebook with only their first name is a *****!

@Jaycers: maybe it is b/c my major is common (biochem) but for our group, everyone is biochem major. So i think they do put people with the same major into a group, but i guess when there isn’t enough people with the same major then they fill the remaining spots with other major (just a guess)

@haha yeah thats exactly the reason why we had business because ours was so small. We had like 3 people change majors too haha it’s crazy how small ChemE is!

Thank you for responding to my question. Did you send your AP test scores before you went to your orientation? If you did, how did college board send your scores? Electronically? Or Mail? How long did it take? Thanks! I’m kinda nervous because my orientation is on 7/9 and 7/10. >_<

@melody
my orientation date was june 30-july 1 so i couldn’t, but when i took the ap tests i wrote UCR’s id number in the section where it asks where to send the scores but unfortunately the scores didn’t become available until July 1. My class schedule doesn’t have anything to do with my AP scores because i knew beforehand that they wouldn’t have my AP scores when i was there so i planned around that. My schedule consists of classes that AP scores do nothing to help, but it will be different for you because i think that the college will probably have the scores by the time you get there. There is only one way to send the scores now and that is by doing the call thing that anhyoungs mentioned beforehand. This is assuming that you didn’t mark UCR’s college ID when it asks you for it on the actual AP test. But either way I’m pretty sure they would both arrive before 7/9 because College Board knows that all universities are starting class registration. But do you mind if i ask which tests you wish to receive credit for because there was some instances where people were placed into classes on the basis of SAT/ACT test scores without the AP scores being official. Oh and by the way everyone some classes require minimum scores on the SAT and ACT, they had to verify on my transcript that my ACT math score was high enough to take Honors Chem 01A.

If your AP tests allow you to skip classes on your schedule or allow you to take higher level classes, can’t you change your schedule? I don’t know if it’s the case with UCR, but some schools you lose AP credit if you take the equivalent class. That would be a shame, although the class might be a bit easier.

You always get elective credit for AP tests no matter what, but if it counts for a class you get both credits and a bump up in the schedule. And at UCR once you go to Orientation you can change your schedule as much as you want on the GROWL website they just make it so it is accessible. However you never lose AP credit, it always counts for something.

Thanks! Yeah, I wrote down the UCR’s id number. I took ap stats, ap calc, and ap environmental science. Do we also need to have our official transcript during the orientation? What if I already sent my transcript, but the school has not received it it yet?

Nope because I was fine and the school hasn’t received my transcript yet either, it doesn’t matter they trust you with that much. SAT/ACT and AP need to be official though.
