Somewhat stealing the idea from a previous poster, but I thought it would be fun to participate in.
I’m an incoming freshman at NU, majoring in MMSS (Mathematical Methods in the Social Sciences) and Economics. I’m starting this thread because I imagine that my selection process was somewhat different than that of a Journalism student.
I had 2370 on the SAT, and am an overrepresented minority from a very underrepresented state. I went to a good, but not excellent public high school, and ended up barely scraping into the top ten percent of my graduating class. I applied to three Ivies (Yale, Harvard, Columbia), Stanford, MIT, and a few others… I ultimately had to chose between Vanderbilt, Claremont McKenna, Rice, and NU!
Ooh, I’m looking into the MMSS program. What motivated you to apply to it and why? Do you have any tips for what you think worked well on your application to the program?
Hey @2016senior2020! Yeah, so actually I found out about the MMSS program when writing my “Why Northwestern” essay. I wanted to apply to it because it seemed like a uniquely-focused math/econ program that actually integrates the two disciplines, rather than the traditional math/econ major, in which a student takes some math and some econ classes without much cross-pollination. And my tips for applying to the program specifically are, first, get into Northwestern, and then, if you have high standardized test scores, admission to MMSS is likely. Just be sure to put some thought into the essays that you write, and you should be good. The freshman admission rate is in the high 60s, of the kids who apply.
I want to go to NU but my gpa is low but I have a High act score (34). I have a lot of ECS and leadership and I plan on applying early so do u have any suggestions or advice that could help me ?
@LW1998 Thanks so much for responding. Do you mind if I DM you with more questions about MMSS as I go through the application process and you start your first few classes at NU?
