Ask Me Anything about the Transfer/Student Experience at Carolina!

If you’ve been around here, you’ll probably remember me from the Transfer Thread last year.

I am a current Junior Economics major at UNC. I formerly transfer from UNC Charlotte. I have enjoyed my time here so far immensely. While the programs are certainly more rigorous for Economics than my previous school, I highly recommend it.

If you have any questions about the transfer experience or student life in general, feel free to post them below and I will do my best to answer them in a timely fashion.

What are your recommendations for getting accepted as a transfer student? It seems from the stats on their website that transfers have significantly lower average test scores but fairly high college Gpa. How important are extracurriculars? Also, if you don’t mind sharing, could you provide some additional info on your particular test scores, gpa, extracurriculars? I’m going to apply next year for transfer.

Absolutely. This is last years transfer thread. It’s lengthy but definitely a worthwhile read.http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-north-carolina-chapel-hill/1856114-unofficial-unc-fall-2016-transfer-thread-p1.html

To answer your questions. GPA is going to be the most important thing for transferring in. As a Junior transfer, I didn’t even have to send in my scores (nor would I have wanted to).

Here’s my stats from the post a year ago:

Currently at: UNCC
GPA: 3.94
Year: Sophomore (Technically Junior because of HS dual enrollment classes)
Major: Economics
HS GPA UW: 3.7 (No AP, just Community College Classes)
Extra Curricular:
-Working twenty-five hours per week.
-Intermural Flag football co-captain.
-Three Time Chancellor’s List (3.8 or higher)
-Eagle Scout

I had a much higher GPA than average. I would say a 3.7 gives you a solid chance and above a 3.5 is competitive. This is much depending on the place you are transferring from though.

If I were to give one recommendation, it is to do what makes you happy. Personally, I put my head in the sand and focused entirely on my GPA. In my last semester at UNCC, I sort of regretted not doing more on campus and not being more involved. Take advantage of that big fish in a little pond feeling, because it becomes far harder to stand out at Carolina. Do the things that make you happy but ultimately it’s likely going to be your GPA that gets you in. Transferring in to Carolina is possibly the best decision I have ever made. I hope to see you here next year.

If you have any more questions want me to elaborate on anything, feel free to ask.

is it hard to get into the business school as a transfer?

Yes, I actually got rejected for the minor as a transfer. In my case, they did not take my original GPA in to consideration. You are at a distinct disadvantage without a UNC GPA. The only people that I know of getting into the major or minor were people who transferred in and also took classes at UNC over the summer.

@TranslationLost what if youre transferring from a more prestigious school? does a higher GPA like 3.7 or 3.8 at a top 20 school increase your chances? or do they completely disregard non-UNC GPA?

My understanding is that a transfer GPA is one of the last things factored into your application. I would highly recommend speaking with someone at the admissions office for Kenan-Flagler. Unfortunately, I can’t answer your question with one-hundred percent certainty.

Hi I’m a sophomore at UNCC currently and I applied to transfer. I have a 4.0 and have taken 18 credits every semester. It just feels too easy sometimes, and I’m really looking to challenge myself. Are the classes harder at UNC? I also have a few on campus jobs and positions in research at Charlotte and I would want to do similar things at UNC as well but I’m worried there won’t be much availability in the science labs especially as a new junior. Also, is it hard to get housing on north campus? I’ve stayed a few weekends with friends in their dorms and I just really would prefer to live near Davis and the UL and the arboretum, even if it means living in Cobb. Thanks for making this thread!

Hey there I was on the thread last year. I ended up getting wait listed and denied eventually. I have definitely increased my resume this time around.

@isuncforme493
Glad to see another 49er on here! I had a 3.95 at UNCC in the business school. The transition for Economics and STEM seems to be the toughest. The classes for me were significantly harder. The pre-reqs definitely teach things here that were not taught in mine. That said, it was the best decision I have ever made. There is a million times more opportunity here, though I can’t speak specifically about the labs. One of my Pre-med friends was able to get a job in the hospital, so I think you’ll be able to find a place.I think you could find housing on north campus. It would be a double, of course, but I think it’s doable.

Feel free to pm me with more or more specific questions.

@jtut2006
Sorry you didn’t make it in. I’ll be hoping for you to make it this year!

Fall 2016
-General Biology 2. A
-Biology Nutrition A
-Spanish 1 B
-Organic Chemistry C It fell from B towards end of semester : /

Spring schedule
Organic chemistry 2
Spanish 2
Calc 1

hey did you submit a resume last year?

Hi, I have a few questions in regards to my chances of receiving acceptance to UNC. To make a long story short, I started high school off relatively strong maintaining a 3.7 UW throughout my first two years. I didn’t care so much about school after that and needless to say I graduated high school with a 3.1 W.

However, during my senior year I began my first internship with a startup tech-recycling company. After my time there was up, I started another internship with a corrugated board manufacturing plant as a quality lab technician.

Last January I was hired full-time as a quality lab technician working 40 hours a week M-F. I started school this fall at my local CC and ended up with a 3.54 GPA after the first semester, taking full-time credit hours and still working at my internship 40 hours a week.

I haven’t taken the SAT or ACT, as those things were of little importance to me during high school unfortunately.

I have also started a website/blog that I work on frequently. If you’d like to read some of my writing: www.fishfliez.com

I plan to apply to UNC as a rising Junior. Given my current achievements (which aren’t so great) and limitations, what should I do between now and the end of my sophomore year to better my chances of acceptance?

@wdp3232

Edit: Also, sorry for the late response! It’s been a busy semester.

SAT and ACT aren’t going to matter. I think your extracurriculars are really engaging. However, your GPA might be on the lower end of who gets accepted. I would try to get that GPA as much as possible and then leverage your unique work experience in the essay and recs. Good luck!

I just got denied as freshman but I still want to go to Unc and will try to transfer next year! What’s your best advice for garutnweing admission as a transfer other than college gpa? How important are extracurriculars and ACT scores/high school gpa?

@annamanna

Sorry to hear you were denied. I was also denied as a freshmen. It’s not the end of the world;, it’s still totally possible to go to UNC. Here’s my suggestion: work on your GPA, especially if you’re reapplying as a Junior. If you are planning on transferring after a year, high school record and scores are going to play a factor. Lastly, make sure you enjoy wherever you decide to go. Don’t spend the entire time focusing on just transferring. You will make yourself miserable. Best of luck!

Also, as I have always said, people are welcome to message me if they have more direct questions or don’t feel comfortable posting them here.
