elmons, two things: First, beware of working too much, lest it impact your studies - there is no point on graduating with half the debt AND half the grades. Second, there are a lot of jobs downtown but also ton of labor supply, so finding a decent job can be very tricky - I worked at a variety of different places during my years in State College, and finding a good job can be tough. Personally, I recommend tips jobs - waiting tables, tending bar, etc. The pay is far better than the rest, the people are awesome, and some places (like The Tavern) specifically hire students…

For the housing contract roommate preferences, what is access ID and how do you get one?

I believe it is the three letter-three number combo that’ll eventually be your email address. You’ll get one on your FTCAP day.

If you’re rooming with someone specifically, I think you just select their name from a list, and the server picks the name-ID combination.

thank you !

OK. I am from out of state. How would you recommend that I send my DD pocket money? Are there major banks at University Park like Bank of America? How does everyone else do it?

I would HIGHLY suggest setting up a PNC account. Many students here have debit cards attached to their accounts (as I do), and it just makes things easier. You can also manage your LionCash through that account as well, but you’ll learn all about that on your FTCAP Day.

Look around here ([Penn State id+: Student Banking](http://www.idcard.psu.edu/students/banking.shtml)) for more info.

They will shuttle her right over to PNC when she is at FTCAP. (I am a little annoyed that PNC practically has a monopoly on student banking; I imagine they pay well for that privilege. DS banks elsewhere.) You should be able to set up a transfer from your own bank to her account as needed. (There is no B of A in State College, but you could search online and see if there is another bank that would work for you.)

What are your thoughts about bringing a bike to campus? Is there a place to store them? Do students usually use them at all? Sounds like a fun thing to have but not if it’s going to be a hassle.

There are also other banks in state college, specifically down town:

Sovereign Bank
Citizens Bank
Nittany Bank

As well as several others.

(also, I thought there was a B of A on South Atherton, near Pizza Hut?)

Lots of students have bikes and there is some indoor storage in the dorms. There are bike racks all around campus and town. My son uses his a lot.

Sovereign has different zones so if, for example, you have an account in Boston, you will not have easy access to your account in State College. (My older son spent months trying to get that sorted out). I think there is an Ameriserv near Pizza Hut. Northwest Savings Bank and M&T bank are two more.

At Penn State do you have to pay for a seperate internet service like verizon or aol?

on campus housing you hv internet service to the room. But You do need to bring along a longer cable or a hub…as it is not wireless in the room. Only the common area in the dorm has wireless. Do go on youtude & search PSU dorm, a few students has good video on their dorm rooms.

If you don’t mind wired internet (which wasn’t a huge deal for me, personally), you don’t need a super-long ethernet cable, unless you plan on using your laptop on your bed.

^^^^^ Sorry, but the the above statement from Duke26 is misleading. The fact of the matter is that there is one ethernet outlet in each dorm room with two jacks. How long of an ethernet cord you need will depend on where you want to use your computer in relation to that outlet. And it can, indeed, take a “super-long” ethernet cable just to reach your desk. If your desk happens to be located right next to the outlet, you don’t need a long cable - if your desk is across the room on the other side, you will need a much longer cable. It’s better to have too long an ethernet cable than one that is too short.

There are plenty of stores in the area where you can buy an ethernet cable. This should not be an issue. In general, if you are unsure about buying something (like how long of a cable you need) just wait until you get there.

awg2004-we are also from out of state and our bank does not have branches in PA. My daughter has her own checking account which is linked to our account, so I transfer money in and she uses her debit card for the most part. When she needs cash, she usually just gets cash back from her debit card. Occasionally she has used an ATM not connected with our bank and had to pay the non-bank charges, but that is very rare- I think only once this year. I also put money on her ID card with lioncash- you just swipe your id card and it deducts funds from the account you set up. You can use it almost everywhere on campus and you get 10% off of food. You can also use it at a lot of off-campus restaurants and stores.

I apologize for being “misleading” but in my room in Pollock the jack was right in between the two desks. Anyone following this thread should know that’s where I lived, and should ask for more specificity if my answer wasn’t what they were looking for.

My take is a 50’ cable will do. (it cost less than $20) The typical room is 17’x13’ or smaller. The jacks will be 3’-4’off the ground. Assume worest case you need to get it to the opposite corner dia across. (17+13+4(from jacks to ground)+4(from ground to desk))=38’ and you allow a few more feet to move around. The cable length go by 10’ inc and the difference in price is about $2. So for a 40’ cable is about right, but for $2 more you can get a 50’ cable a much saver choice. Also, don’t forget you may not stay in the same dorm/room next yr.

How many credits can be counted towards both a major and minor?

I’m not quite sure what you mean here. If you mean “Can credits be double-counted for a major and minor?” then yes, and there isn’t a limit on that.
