Ask Me Anything

Bump_________

Sorry, I totally forgot about this. Hope you all can understand.

@Recrucio: Unfortunately I don’t know anything about the Spring admissions process. Your high school stats looks good enough to get in (quite similar to mine), but I’m not exactly sure how the Spring admissions process differs from the Fall one.

@BUgebs: Unfortunately (quite the negative post here so far) Penn State doesn’t look too much into ECs, LORs, or essays, and focuses more on the statistical information, which from their perspective will be your weak point. At this point I think you should be hoping for summer/satellite admission. From there, you can apply directly into the program in Smeal when the time comes.

What is the best way to go about finding a roommate for on campus living for the 2012-2013 school year? Also, say I got an offer for nittany apartments which houses 4 people amd I had a random roommate. Could I then request two of my friends who tried, but didn’t get an offer for it?

-For on-campus housing it gets tricky because you have to put in their PSU ID. Saying that, your best bet is to get someone you know, maybe put up flyers or something? Unfortunately there isn’t some internal list (for lack of a better word) where people wanting non-random, definitely normal roommates can find them.

-That I don’t know. There are a ton a different scenarios that can happen to people, so I’d suggest emailing the eliving people (assignmentoffice@psu.edu).

Bump

Hi! I was wondering how difficult/competitive the honors level classes are? ie. are people really cut-throat competitive? Thanks~

Though I’ve never personally taken an honors course, I know more than a few people who have.

The students in the classes aren’t all typical “cut-throat”, constantly studying, super-competitive people who you know took all APs in high school just because. There’s a wide variety of students with different personalities and work ethics, but they’re all there for a reason: they’re intelligent. For every annoyingly competitive person in your class, chances are there are five or six “normal” people that are more than willing to help and work with you.

From what I’ve heard of the professors, they are very involved and interested in your learning experience (not meant to be a generalization about all of them, just the ones I’ve heard). Also, with smaller classes, it is easier to get to know your professor beyond the surface level of the classroom.

Hope that helped.

Chance me?

GPA- 3.42/4.0 (unweighted), 3.95 (weighted)

8 ap classes.

Holds a job at a local Subway.

Extracurricular activities- Member of wrestling team and robotics team, treasurer to FBLA (future business leaders of America), won second in the state in job interviewing last year at the FBLA state conference, 100+ hours of volunteer work.

SAT score- 1700 first time taking it, 1840 second time around

Outstanding letters of recommendations.

Race- Hispanic, first gen.

I am applying to the Smeal College of Business and I have chosen the optional summer at University Park, I also applied to Mont Alto, so if I dont have much of a chance getting in University Park, do you think I can still make Mont Alto and transfer to University Park later on? I submitted my application in early November so I also made early action.

I think you’ll be accepted to Mont Alto at worst, regular admission at UP at best (obviously). My guess would be summer session (somewhere in the middle).

How much will my GPA hurt me? Does it hurt that I had a terrible year last year (gpa used to be 3.7+) because of personal reasons?

Got in on Thanksgiving, had a few questions.

How big is the Greek scene?
What would be the best dorms, if best means close to places a typical freshman would need to be?

Also, do you know if everyone who get’s above the required GPA for Smeal (3.5 for finance, 3.2 for the rest of business majors) is accepted into Smeal, or at least close to everyone? Thanks!

Duke26, I apologize if you have been asked this before, but I wanted to know what you would tell someone that had PSU as their first choice school and is now unsure after the recent fallout of the scandal.

To Pens, I’m applying to Penn State, so I’ll tell you my opinion. I don’t really think the fallout from this scandal will be as bad as the sensationalized media would like you to believe. My plan is to attend Penn State if I want to, and 2-3 years down the line if I feel like it is hurting people (which I whole-heartedly believe it won’t) then I will transfer. Recruiters see where you graduate from, not necessarily where you went to school.

@rd1023: Your GPA will definitely pull your chances of getting accepted to UP down, but hopefully they look at the 8 AP courses you took. I kind of took the middle road in my prediction. You should include the personal reasons that dropped your GPA in your personal statement (maybe how you overcame them (assuming you did)?).

@JTownatp: The Greek scene here is definitely prevalent, but not overwhelmingly so. Essentially, it’s there if you’re interested, but not smacking you in the face if you don’t. Regarding freshman dorms, I’ve posted a couple times in here a bunch of different pros and cons, so I’d suggest looking through the thread real quick. With respect to Smeal admissions, I think you’re good if you get the GPA, but I’m not positive. I’m sure someone else would be able to correct/reinforce that.

@Pens1394: I could probably go on and on about this, but I’ll try to keep it short for everyone’s sake.

Basically, this scandal surrounds the football program (and two men no longer employed by Penn State). If someone’s coming to Penn State just because of the football team, then you probably shouldn’t be here.

Also, while the atmosphere here is definitely rather oddly inexplicable, it will (in my opinion) eventually get back to “normal.” The amazing things that make Penn State are still here and will continue to be here for the foreseeable future.

And if you’re worried about the future prospects after you graduate, corporate recruiters love Penn State, and the value of a Penn State education is still great regardless of any scandal surrounding a creepy old pedo. Anyone willing to discriminate your degree is probably not someone you want to be working for.

So, in short, no. As has been repeated many times here and around the Penn State community, We (Still) Are Penn State, and always will be.

Can you tell me my chances of getting into UP? My GPA weighted is a 5.17/7 and my unweighted GPA is 3.20/4. I’m from NJ, applied for summer session, got a 1640 on my SAT, great essay, and great extracurriculars. I’m thinking summer session. Any thoughts?

Your GPA and SAT sound kind of low, though there’s a chance you could get summer session. I’d look around here (and try Googling) for the Bubble Chart that Penn State released, that’s pretty helpful.

I posted it. Number 327 on this thread.

There is some great information regarding acceptance to UP verses campuses at admissions.psu.edu/facts/studentbody. They say that your GPA accounts for 2/3 and 1/3 is SAT, class rank, essay, and activities. This might be helpful, it was for my D But they say it does not guarantee admission.

I was accepted like 2 weeks ago to UP ( Checked it online) yet I still did not receive a mail from them. Also, I heard everybody else who applied got mails from PSU about the scandal but again I didnt get one… What should I do?

I would go to PSU admissions on Facebook and ask the admissions counselor. This site was mentioned in the letter that everyone received from the President of PSU. They are very helpful and will get right back to you.
