How does life at Penn State match what you expected? Were there any surprises? Any disappointments?

That’s kind of a tough question to answer broadly because it’s such a personal question. I can tell you though that when you hear everyone say how much they love Penn State, they’re not kidding. Everyone here just exudes school spirit (which I love), obviously evidenced by the football games and (especially) THON, and is generally happy to be here (hence Happy Valley? just kidding). And that’s something I expected from a school like Penn State, which I consider to be the total package when you factor everything in (academics, athletics, social life, etc.). Even though I knew I was going to what I considered my perfect school, Penn State still met and exceeded my expectations.

I hope that helped. It’s tough because it was kinda a broad question.

You might think this is a dumb question but I’m extremely serious.
How is life for people who don’t care about football?

I don’t hate football or dislike it, its just that the sport doesnt appeal to me. Do you know people who don’t go to football games or tailgate and still have a good time. I’ve been told that you can’t have a good time at PSU UP if youre not into football.

How is the LGBT life at University Park?

ephenst: While it will seem as if campus dies during football games, that notion that you can’t have a good time here if you don’t like football is ridiculous. If anything, for you Saturdays could be the best day to study or do homework because you could easily grab a good spot in the library (I assume) and get some serious work done. I do think the student section is something everyone should experience while they’re here though. It’s one of those “Wow” moments that Penn State does so well. And you wouldn’t be the only one who doesn’t understand/like football there. Pregaming might help with that too.

grigg02: There’s a link floating around this site somewhere that says Penn State’s in the top ten for most gay-friendly campuses or something like that, and from what I’ve seen it’s definitely true. There’s a pretty popular club here whose name is escaping me, and there’s also a LBGT fraternity ([Gay, progressive fraternity added to IFC - The Daily Collegian Online](http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2010/03/17/new_frat_added_to_ifc.aspx)).

Are there any decent ski mountains near Penn state? I have heard of tussey mountain but I was wondering if there was something a little bigger

grigg02, The club is [Chumley’s - State College, PA](http://www.yelp.com/biz/chumleys-state-college)

The next closest skiing is probably at [Blue Knob All Seasons Resort - Pennsylvania’s Best Kept Secret, Ski It To Believe It.](http://www.blueknob.com/winter/), about an hour and fifteen minutes from PSU.

I was actually referring to the extra-curricular club(s) ([Penn State LGBTA Student Resource Center - Resources](http://www.sa.psu.edu/lgbt/apps/resources.aspx#1)) but the bar/club works too, just shows how LGBT-friendly State College and Penn State is.

Hello. I am an international transfer student applying to penn state university park. I submitted my application in january, and sent all my other required documents by the 1st of feb. I have applied for a major in finance.

My gpa is 3.04
SAT 1790

When do they start giving out decisions?
What are my chances?

Thank you.

As an American student that’s in no way connected to the Admissions Office, I have absolutely no idea what the international admissions process is like. From what I’ve heard though, the university is a little more…lenient with the international students so that (IMO) they can appear more diverse and of course get more money. Your stats are kinda slightly below average especially for finance, but for international students I really can’t tell you much more. Try calling the admissions office.

@1moremom and Duke, thanks to both of you!

D was accepted for fall 2011 UP ~ Lives way out west. She wants to know how/when tickets go on sale for the first football game of the season. I am sure the tickets sell out VERY quickly. thanks:)

Hi nitnat
We are west also (in California). Tickets go on sale in June or July and there will be a designated day for freshmen to purchase their tickets on a first come, first serve basis. You should get an email from PSU with all of the information well in advance, but if you don’t, you can go to gopsusports.com to get details as the time gets closer. The only bad part for us west-coasters is that they go on sale at 7AM EST time so we were up bright and early last year so that we could be on the computer at 4AM. We did get one though so I guess it was worth it.

I’m pretty sure the freshman sale started in the late afternoon last year, if it was that early I’d be at work and I remember frantically punching in numbers and being nervous it didn’t go through. They told us at FTCAP (you’ll probably hear the same thing) that two years ago they sold out in forty seconds, last year was a few hours long I think though. Regardless, if you want them, open up the page a few minutes before and keep hitting refresh. Because, as noted, they are SO worth it.

The way tickets sales are handled was changed in 2009 to prevent students with no interest in the game from buying tickets and reselling them. Since the change was made sales have been brisk, but I don’t think anyone who got online promptly was shut out.

The new system also makes it nearly impossible to sell tickets to games you can’t go to. I put them online for half the face value and there were no takers.

I’ve had rather good luck selling my tickets Duke26. I put mine up early though, so that may help a bit.

I wanted to ask how the Greek life is at PSU. From everything I’ve read, it seems to be not a big deal. I’m from the south (where it is a huge deal) and have always been set on being in a sorority… so would I be giving up anything if I decide to go and rush at Penn State?

Whats the music scene like in State College? Do you know/notice/see a fair amount of musicians? Are there a decent amount of student bands, and do decent acts come in to play smaller, underground type shows?

I ask this because as a musician I wouldn’t mind being part of a band up at UP as well as maintaining the one i’m in back home.

My son was able to sell all his tickets to others with no problem. He got a little less than face value - but that was okay. We bought his tickets on the “chance” that he didn’t make it into the band. This year - as a returning Blue Band member - we won’t bother with buying tickets.

spacemannate - what do you play?
