By all means necessary, try to avoid Chemistry (unless you like it)

Hi. My son is accepted to Material Science and Engineering (MATSE), College of Earth and Mineral Science for Fall 2011.Why is this department under College of Earth and Mineral Science in stead of College of Engineering as in other universities? He is also interested in Nano Technology/Engineering, would he be able to take a minor or related courses which are, I believe, not offered at MATSE? Lastly, what is the workload/environment at MATSE compared to other Engineerings at Penn State? Thanks.

That’s in my college actually, though I’ll admit I don’t know much about the MATSE (as it’s short-handedly called here) program. Regarding the workload, I’d again direct you to the recommended academic plans link that’s in this thread somewhere, as well as the MATSE website ([PENN STATE, MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING](http://www.matse.psu.edu/)). Try having him email someone in the faculty, can’t hurt to get his name out there.

If he does decide to go to Penn State, I’d definitely recommend him going to TOTEMS, which you’d find out about at FTCAP day. He’d be able to meet some of his future professors there too.

Thanks, Duke26

Duke, Just wondering… does Penn State releases the admission stats…on: how many applicants, number of admission offer, admitted% ? total? by colleges?

Eric: Here’s the University Park admissions information from the Common Data Set for this past year (2010-2011). It does not break it down into the different colleges, however.
[C. Freshman Admission](<a href=“Error Page”>Error Page)

This isn’t exactly what you were asking, but it’s the breakdown of UP enrollment by class year and by college. You can probably assume that 95%+ of the first year students are newly enrolled freshmen.

Thx Quiet Type. good inform especially the second link. Do you know when do they provide updates for 2011-2012?

can you guys help answer these problems by clicking on the links. Thanks.
:)

To eric2011 I don’t believ they can even begin to calculate those amounts for 2011 until after May 1st. It’ll most likely be even later than that as they wil still have to wait for the waitlisted students to accept their decision as well.

How do I pick out housing? I can’t find a link on the myPSU

^^^^^^^^^Housing

I’m not too sure what you mean by “pick out.” If you’ve already submitted your housing contract offer, you’ll hear about that early summertime. That you’d find out through eliving.

Hey Duke, I just had one more question. How is the College of Agricultural Science? I was interested in Toxicology and Food Science…

Solid college and solid programs. FD SC is ranked as one of the top programs in the nation. Tox is a new program but has a solid curriculum with great faculty.

Haha there ya go, can’t really add much to that. My best advice is to visit and ask the faculty as many questions as possible. I visited Lehigh for engineering (for which they’re rather prestigious) but didn’t like the facilities and was kinda turned off by the curriculum and professors.

I was wondering how much closet space there is in East halls. Since we will be flying her back, we were wondering what to bring and what to leave behind. We live out west.

The closet size is pretty comparable to what I have here in Pollock, so let’s see…

A rough guesstimation with my ruler says they’re about four feet wide and two feet deep. The ones in East won’t be exactly that, but they’re pretty similar.

nitnat…

Bring as little as you can… there is not a lot of storage space in these rooms. You can get a little more by putting your bed up on risers and using the under-bed bins you can get at walmart, but still, bring as little as possible.

Has anyone received their housing assignment yet from the psu eliving website?

Housing won’t be up for First year students till late July at the earliest.
