Ask me anything!

Hi everyone, my name is Liz and I am a freshman here at Fordham. If you have any questions about anything in particular (campus life, admissions, academics, etc.), I'd be more than happy to help you out. If you do not want to use the discussion board, feel free to email me as well. Good luck with everything! :)

Are you at RH or LC?

I am at the Rose Hill campus.

Hi eldavis, I was accepted at Fordham at RH, back in December. I have been waitlisted at my first choice school, so now I'm really considering Fordham. I actually havent visited it yet, but plan to soon. Any accepted students days in early April?

I have heard some really great things about this school. But I do have some questions.

How would you describe the student body?

What are the academics like, and professors? Ive heard they are good, but the school has a big core curriculum as do most Jesuit schools. Is that a drag? Whats the workload like?

Location??? This is a big one, I've never been to NYC, and hearing its in the Bronx is a bit intimidating, coming from a small town. I know the campus is safe, but do you like the location?

Is there a lot going on on campus? Do you have fun there? How would you rate school spirit?

Are most students successful after?

I'll have a better picture of it once i visit it, but would most agree its definitly a school to seriously consider? My other top choices now are Providence College and Simmons, with a scholarship to Simmons...Honestly I dont know how I am going to choose, I like them both! And from what I hear Fordham is great also...

Wow! Lots to answer! Haha, thats fine, I'll do my best.

First of all, I see you're from Maine. My really good friend here is also from Maine, she went to Catherine McCauley HS. Sound familiar? Sorry, I just enjoy coincidences.

Anyway, there are some visit days for accepted students, and the information should actually be in your acceptance package...but if not, then I believe the date is April 23rd for the RH campus. I should know this since I work at the admissions office, but if you cant find any info yourself, go ahead and call 1-800-Fordham and most likely I or one of my friends there can help you out.

The student body is great. Honestly, I thought everyone was going to be stuck-up New England snobs, but I was completely wrong. I've never met more down-to-earth people in my life! My roommate is from Queens, and my other good friend is from Maine (like I said) and we're practically all sisters now. And now this summer they're coming to visit me in Dallas. But there are people from all over, not just NY NJ CT, etc., and everyone is so open-minded and we all have a great time.

The core curriculum isn't bad at all. Some classes you may not like (such as Philosophy for me) but the professors are awesome and the classes are small enough that if you want to you can get to know your professor on a pretty personal level. They're always available to help you and urge you to bring your papers to them, meet with them, etc. But you can definitely get out of some of the core classes if you have AP credits and stuff.

As far as location, you really couldn't ask for a more perfect set up. You have the comfort and openness of the Rose Hill campus and only 30 minutes away is the best city in the world. The Bronx can be scary at times, but only at 2:30 in the morning by yourself. You really just have to use common sense. Otherwise, there's AWESOME food as well as some pretty good thrift shopping. Nothing to be afraid of. Plus, there's guards at every entrance checking IDs so no one gets onto campus that isn't allowed.

There's ALWAYS something going on on campus. The RA's always have something going, so do dorms, as well as the entire school. For instance, this week is Fordham Week and so far there's been a BBQ, tomorrow there is a "battle of the bands" kind of thing, and Friday there's going to be a Nordstrom fashion show. We have fall and spring weekends where musical artists like Howie Day (from Maine!) come and play and there is a lot of school spirit. Especially at the basketball games, they're ridiculous!! but so much fun!!

Students are definitely successful afterward, people get internships left and right, some without even trying! We have a top 20 business school and a top-rated liberal arts program so you cant go wrong no matter what you decide to do.

I hope I answered your questions! If you need anything else, let me know :)

~Liz

can you please compare the culture atmosphere of RH and LC? My d is wondering which she would rather live at. I know she can take her core classes at either but what feel does each residence and campus have? How are they different or similar? Thanks

Since I dont live at LC, my perspective of the campus isnt going to be completely accurate, but from what I've seen the students are a lot more independent in nature. A good majority of the students commute, and all of the students are strictly liberal arts or performing and visual arts majors. Everyone is still very nice and well-rounded, but the atmosphere is much different from Rose Hill. There is only one high-rise for dormortories and one academic building for the undergrads. I believe there are a few basketball courts, but very little greenspace as compared to RH. LC still puts on a lot of programs and things such as plays and performances as well as the usual student body functions. It all depends on what someone is looking for. The core curriculum is the same at LC however and it isn't until they fulfill the core that they can pursue their intended major just at RH.

Class size is extremely important to me. How large is the average class and how many people are in your largest class?

Average class size is about 21:1 I believe. There are no 500 people lecture class things, and a lot of professors take attendance. My smallest class has maybe been 12/13 and my biggest was about 33 for a business math core class.

Thanks for the great info. Since you work in the Admissions office...do you know if Admissions sent out acceptances/rejects/waitlist in any particular order. It seems like all the postings are from accepted students. I was wondering if they mail acceptances first and then rejects and waitlists? I was deferred in December and haven't received anything yet. I live in Mass.

Wow, that's awesome. Thank you for your speedy reply :)

You should be receiving your decision by April 1st. However, Im not sure how they do the waitlist, but you will probably hear back later than the 1st because they have to see how many kids actually decide to enroll and gather a number from there. But if you were deferred from EA, then I'd say your chances are good to get accepted as long as your 1st semester of your senior year was strong.

Yea, thanks so much for replying so soon! Great response also. I'm excited to go see it. But it'll be different seeing Yankee fans...hmmm haha. Also, one other thing, are students at RH and LC pretty much seperate? Like do they seem like two different colleges?

Eldavis87, since you work in Admissions, do you have any info on when they'll start to review transfer applications?

Ha, yeah, it's tough being one of about 5 Texas Rangers fans here, but you get used to it! There are a lot of Boston fans though, so that makes things interesting. The students at LC and RH are separate in terms of location, yes. Some students from both campuses take classes at the other so we do mingle with each other. Plus we go to plays and things at LC and they come to dances and functions here. The student body of LC is different in regards to their sense of independence however. Not a lot of the kids live on campus at LC (because there is such little housing available) so a lot of kids commute or live in the city. But the persona of the kids is the same anywhere from what I've noticed, everyone is very nice and polite and we're all here for the same reason, to get an awesome education and have a great time doing it. So check out the majors and things offered at both campuses and see which one would be right for you. My good friend from Maine I was talking about goes to RH with me, but her friend from Maine goes to LC and loves it too. Lots of Maine connections, haha.

Good luck!

The deadline for transfer applications for the Fall 2006 semester isnt until July 1 2006, so if you decide to apply for the fall, you will probably hear from us sometime around the middle of July.

Hi! I applied EA to Fordham and was deferred. Two of my friends from my town recieved acceptance letters Monday (3/27) but I am really worried because have not received anything yet!! :(
Does Fordham send out rejections after acceptances? You can tell me!

Dont worry, you will hear from us by April 1st, rejection or acceptance. And if it doesn't come by next week, call 1-800-Fordham and you can talk to an admission counselor. I'm sure it's on its way :)

okay THANKS!

hi eldavis! what would you say is the size of minority students especially african americans/asians? i am an asian and my friend who wants to attend the skool is african-american.
