Ask me anything

While Farmer is definitely not a place where you can just “coast through” it is still very possible to have a significant social life outside of school. There are harder business core classes and them some that are easier. Obviously as you advance through your major you can expect the classes to get more difficult. Several classes curve, but it is at the discretion of the professor.

In regards to advise, I definitely wish I had more help with scheduling at the beginning. Even though you meet with an advisor during orientation it can be very rushed as they are meeting with a large number of students.

@Melbkangaroo In Oxford there is a Walmart and Kroger but not much else. It is about 45 min away from Cincy, which has many more options. The best advise I can give is that Miami can seem somewhat isolated at time, but if she brings a car or someone she knows has one that can help a lot. It is nice to drive to Cincinnati or Hamilton a few times a month for errands or things to do.In regards to class sizes, the business core classes tend to be the larger ones. My accounting class has close to 150 students and business 101 has over 50. The Miami plan classes can be large, like geology and other lecture classes, but others like american studies can be smaller (around 30). It really depends on the course, but you should expect some larger classes in the first year or two.

@Bubblewrap666 I would say Miami tends to lean on the conservative side, but with that said, there are defintely people here from all ends of the political spectrum.

Thank-you @zpillers!

Any thoughts on using Miami’s online roommate match tool? Would choosing a roommate through this tool eliminate the possibility of being assigned a triple or double?

Also, do any engineering majors (or parents of engineering majors) know if most of these freshman kids pick the Engineering LLC? I know that it requires the student to take an additional 1 hour course. Any thoughts on the value of this?

Thanks!

I know many people who used the online roommate match and I think it is definitely a valuable tool, especially for new students. I do not think it eliminates the possibility of having a certain room size, but I am not sure on this.

A good portion of the engineering majors do choose the Engineering LLC, but they are also spread out across the other LLCs as well. I think it is a value to be surrounded by people who share a similar interest as you, not to mention helping with classes, but it is certainly not for everyone.

Which LLC is popular for Business students?

Honors LLC or Guys in Engineering LLC? Son is undecided engineering. Looking for a roommate/roommates who are on the more serious side when it comes to studying.

@jandhmom - My son is a freshman engineering major. He has enjoyed the Honors community in Tappan Hall. Most of the kids study hard like he does, but there is time for fun.

Completely mundane type questions!

I’ve been fielding questions about HS graduation gifts & college dorm needs from family and friends for my son. Most are wanting to give either an actual gift (bike) or cash + a smaller, token type gift (laundry detergent supply, etc). So I apologize for the completely boring questions below, but it would be very helpful to know these things from a current student.

Washer/Dryer - Do the washers and dryers work well in the dorms? Do people have problems using the pod type detergents (vs regular powder or liquid) in the washer? Do the dryers actually work or just get clothes mostly dried? Does the notification system actually work well to let you know when your cycles are done or units are open for use?

Mini Fridges - do they actually work well too? Or are there frequently problems with temperature regulation that causes either freezer burn or only mild cold to run?

Bikes - I’m told there are a few people who’ve said not to bring a bike to get to/from classes across campus because everyone hates the people who ride bikes around. Is this true?

Window AC units - how much of an issue is it to end up without an AC unit or central air?

Cable - do many students bring a TV to hook into the cable network to watch? Room space used up worth it generally? Actual worthiness of programming offered?

Coffee - do many kids use Keurig type coffee makers in their room? Considering the changes in meal plan options coming, would it be advisable to bring one?

Vacuums - do the dorm provided vacuums work well? Would a personal use rechargeable, lightweight stick type vacuum be advisable?

Other than money, what other Dorm/College Life type gifts (big or small) would you recommend in addition to things related to the stuff listed above to make life a little nicer for an incoming freshman?

Thanks in advance!

@jumbletumbles My D is a freshman at Miami, so I can only give you a parent’s perspective.

Washer/Dryer - D’s complained that the dryer cycles aren’t long enough. She often makes use of her folding drying rack. She has not had issues with the notification system.

Mini Fridges - work ok - not great. It took D and her roommate a bit to figure out a setting that kept food cool without freezing it. They do keep milk, fruits and veggies in their fridge. I wouldn’t recommend anything such as ground beef or chicken. Her dorm has a kitchenette on each floor with a full size refrigerator and freezer. Her friends who like to cook do store food in the big fridges.

Bikes - D went to campus without a bike, then called a few weeks into the first semester and asked us to bring her one. She doesn’t normally use it for getting to classes, but it’s handy for getting to the rec, health center, etc. that are a lengthy walk from her dorm. Riding to some classes could be tricky because of the number of people walking, but you will see many full bike racks outside the academic buildings.

Window AC - just depends on preference. Ohio can be pretty toasty in August. My D has allergies, so she requested a unit. However, she ended up in a renovated dorm that has AC. If you plan to request a window unit, do so soon. They only have so many units and do run out.

Cable - D doesn’t have a TV, but many of her friends do.

Coffee - My D could not live without her coffee maker! She has a single serve coffee maker from Bed, Bath and Beyond. It is not a Keurig and uses regular ground coffee (so no expensive K cups.) D has early classes every day and does not have time to go to the dining halls in the AM.

Vacuums - D has never found the vacuum in her dorm. She bought an inexpensive corded stick vac at Target and uses it frequently. If you think your son will use a vacuum, I would recommend getting one.

Ds best dorm room purchases were probably plastic drawers for under her bed (she has a mini lofted bed) and a hutch for her desk - both from The Container Store. She also has a metal cart that her fridge sits on. It has two shelves for dishes, snacks, etc. We purchased the cart at Bed, Bath, and Beyond. A nicer (and more expensive one) is available at The Container Store.

Bean Boots and a warm parka were also fantastic purchases. Not sure what boys wear, but don’t wait until winter to shop.

Hope this info helps a bit. It would be interesting to hear from a student!

I agree with most everything answered above, but will provide a few different opinions:

Mini Fridges - they work decently well most the time, but the freezer portion of them is very small! If your son is assigned to an older dorm there is only one small kitchen for the whole dorm in the basement. They have a larger fridge here but it is communal, so no guarantees with that.

Bikes - If he has a bike I recommend bringing it and letting him try it the first few weeks. They are not for everyone, but can significantly cut down on the time to get to classes.

Window AC - I cannot comment too much on the difference but my dorm is one of the few older ones that actually has central air. I think it is nicer, but not a huge deal.

Cable - Most students bring a tv for either gaming or to watch. The channels offered by Miami is actually really good compared other schools, even having HD channels.

Vacuum - I would definitely invest in a small vacuum or handheld one. Like said above I have never used one from the dorm, nor know if they actually have one for students to use.

Some other items that would be good to have are:
desk lamp, plates and utensils ( either plastic or metal), mattress pad is a big plus, and some storage bins either for under the bed or the closet. Microwave is good too, although maybe wait on that to see if his roommate has one to bring. Hope this helps.

@Violinviolamom @zpillers Thank you! VERY helpful!

Also recommend the slim felt hangers. Take up less space than plastic ones. I will second the mattress pad. It’s worth spending $100 on for sure. My daughter has never had a tv at school. She watched Hulu or Netflix on her computer but that’s a pretty individual thing.

Thank you for all of the information! Is there any transportation provided to local airports during semester breaks? For example, does the campus organize busing to Cincinnati or Dayton Airport? How would a student get to a Cincinnati greyhound or Megabus location?

On a similar thought, we know there is a bus that runs from the OU campus to Columbus (might be just weekends, not sure about that part). Is there something like that at Miami?

@RuturePittMom @raellis123 - These guys are good and reasonably priced. http://www.oxfordlimousine.net/ Also, the Butler County Regional Transit Authority provides shuttle service to the Dayton and Cincinnati airports at the beginning and end of terms, fall break and spring break. http://www.butlercountyrta.com/uploads/pdfs/AIRPORT%20SHUTTLES%20FLYER%202015.pdf We have not used this service yet.

Looking at your University of Arizona logo @raellis123, you may be in Arizona like us. If we are all flying to Miami, we use the Indianapolis airport, where there are direct flights from Phoenix. Prices tend to be less too. But there is no transportation from there to Oxford, so you have to rent a car.

Hi @Beaudreau, I’m an Arizona grad but living in central Ohio now. Was wondering about bus service for our son as freshmen aren’t allowed to have cars on campus.

The students could say better. My son does take the bus to Wal-Mart. There is also bus
service to Meijer in Hamilton. Campus is pretty walkable.

@raellis123 - My son says the bus service is good and free. He sometimes uses it on campus, and takes it to Walmart and Kroger.
