Ask Me Questions about Northwestern

I am a recent Northwestern graduate. I can answer any questions about social life and admissions at the university. You can ask me questions about particular schools, courses, social activities, etc.. Start away!

Welcome back!

How hard is the engineering school to get into compared to all the other schools.

Also, is the engineering school a top tier school compared to schools like M.I.T., and Umich.

@ Sam Lee

Thank you. I am glad to be back on College Confidential.

@ lssd2012

NU's Engineering School is competitive and is in the same league as MIT and Michigan. I believe MIT and Michigan are more difficult to gain admission than NU. Many NU engineering grads have good careers and attend excellent grad school programs because of the strong emphasis on business and career education.

lssd2012,

I think NU engineering is harder to get in than Michigan though Michigan is ranked higher in engineering overall. It's no MIT but NU does have top-10 departments in management science/engineering and material sciences. It's civil/mechanical/biomedical are in/near the top-10. EECS has been rising in pretty good pace. The engineering science & applied math is a unique department that many other schools don't have. ChemE has always been very good though I just found out it fell out of top-20 for the first time (#23). In short, it's behind just a handful of schools like MIT/Stanford/Berkeley/CalTech/Michigan/GaTech, at least based on graduate rankings. It's about the same as Princeton but ahead of schools like Duke, Columbia, Rice, or Penn.

Is a double major in big areas such as engineering or economics and journalism feasible?

Yes.

You can double major in engineering/econ easily and in fact, a lot of people do just that (especially the industrial engineering & management sciences majors).

Engineering + journalism is a bit trickier and requires a separate application:
Honors and Combined Programs - Northwestern University: McCormick School of Engineering

It's a BS/MSJ program (5 years)

when are acceptance letters going to start infiltrating our anxious mailboxes?!

@ caliboi1313

Acceptance letters usually come around late March. I believe it's possible to learn the decision online. You have until mid-April to reply back to the school of your choice.

@ sainclaire

Double-majoring is easy to do. I was a double major at NU. If the majors have some overlap, it will be easier and quicker to complete in four years. For formal programs, it may take up to 5 years to complete (like Music + WCAS, for example). Economics is a very popular second major/minor among engineering students.

How much of an emphasis is placed on HS senior year grades?

@ molliemeow

The junior year and fall semester of your senior year are very important. Most colleges focus on the type of courses you take and how well you do in them. Do not suffer senioritis in your senior year, especially after you submit your college applications. Counselors are still required to send reports on your progress. If you slip very badly, some colleges can easily rescind your admission.

tsnisghs- how good are the career services at northwestern? Do they conduct mock interviews, and are there big-name investment banks that actively recruit northwestern students?

@ CNI

The career services at Northwestern is very good if you are aspiring for a career in business and engineering. When I was there, I saw the big-name investment banks interview students. The workshops and career information guides at Career Services are very helpful whether it's deciding your major, preparing for grad school or preparing for that mock interview with Goldman Sachs. Practicums, externships and internships are strongly encouraged too. There are several corporate job fairs, especially in the fall and winter of recruiting season.

What is the thing you remember most about Northwestern? What are some of the defining moments of your college experience?

how good are the career services at northwestern?
good in the sense that they attract the top recruiters (although i don't know if you can necessarily attribute them credit over the students) but not good if your expectations are to go into UCS, say "i want to work for JP Morgan," and have them say "sure, call up my friend mike, the recruiting director." they are very hands-off in that regard.

Do they conduct mock interviews
yes

and are there big-name investment banks that actively recruit northwestern students?
every one except for bear stearns pretty much. they all interview on campus (i don't know why bear stearns is never on campus).

the most notable presence/recruiting effort is by GS, JPM, Deutsche Bank, UBS, Morgan Stanley.

Lazard (middle market) also recruits, as do places such as wells fargo

and many, many consulting firms (McKinsey BCG Bain Monitor, Mercer, Deloitte LEK etc are all on campus)

can i answer your question, sachmoney?

THE COLD.

no, jk i'm just bitter it's freaking 5 degrees outside today.

Hey it's cold where I am right now too. Also, back home in Boston it's known to get cold. The cold is one thing I'm not worried about, and I think I might even like, when I'm walking to class at least.

Huh, honors program...

Well, is journalism and econ a common combination? I'd like to stick to journalism and i've heard with the liberal arts requirements, its not that hard to double major.

Thanks for your replies Sam Lee and tenisghs!

Sach,

it's the windchill here that kills. you might be okay with the cold but when it slaps you in the face like it does here, i promise you will not like it one bit.

on the contrary, it was 45 degrees yesterday. 5 today, but the last two days were like spring so i can't complain.

Journalism and Econ is a very common double major, but don't underestimate the Journalism curriculum. Medill is Medill for a reason.
