Ask me questions about Northwestern!

Hi June,

Thank you! Reading that made me happy. I'm glad my post helped. :)

Amy

I guess this could be like a common knowledge, but,

with the quarter system at NU, how many courses in general, do ppl take per quarter? how many hrs a week do classes in general have?

4 classes, each 3 hours a week of class time.

Do you know what a dean's scholar is and what the benefits are?

What kind of work do they assign in Medill writing courses and why is it considered hard?

June, typically students take 4 courses a quarter for the 3 quarters a year. Most often, the classes are 3 hours a week, either one hour for 3 days or sometimes 1.5 hours for 2 days; some larger lecture classes may be 4 hours, because there are 3 hours of lecture and then 1 hour session with a TA.

Sainclare -- google "Medill F."

Does financial aid get better/worse/roughly the same over time?

Do the graduate programs interfere with the undergraduates' opportunities (especially in theater)?

I hope no one has asked this already...

Can you please tell me about some of the traditions at NU? How does the school function as a cohesive unit with such a diverse student body?

Thank you!

One long-standing tradition is The Rock, which is located on the south part of campus in between several heavily-trafficked academic halls (University Hall to the north, Harris to the south). Students paint it with whatever they wish to publicize and then guard it til the next morning. From my NU days, I have several pictures of myself painting it for various activities I was involved with, and one of my boyfriend (now husband) who painted it with "Je t'aime" and my initials :-).

Sorry, link didn't work - let's try this one.

I might also add Dance Marathon, and the various shows (Waa-Mu, Mee-Ow, Dolphin) as events that involve the whole campus. I myself was in WCAS but had friends across all the schools -- I didn't particularly find it a problem to make friends with different majors / interests.

this seems like a rather shallow question, but...does Northwestern give any free stuff to freshmen who have enrolled? like, i know that freshmen attending duke get a ipod.

i'm kinda wondering b/c debating whether or not to get a laptop now or wait

WHOA NOW
freshmen in duke gets an ipod? wow.... why-_-?

i doubt if NU will give out a laptop (or if any school does), but i remember reading somewhere that you could get student discount getting a laptop- or sth similar. (and i do realize that's not so helpful, but it was somewhere in the admission package)

Hah, same thing as cutting $300 from tuition. :P

I think for Medill, they require you to purchase a certain laptop and other equiptment.

Also, on the Daily NW, they said:

"The Medill School of Journalism is almost as generous as Music with its grades. Ninety-seven percent of the grades given in Fall 2001 were A's and B's -- counter evidence to Medill's hard-line reputation."

I understand the Medill F is pretty hardcore but if the above is true, is it really that hard?

Umm...there's no way that's true, most Medildos I know constantly complain about harsh grading. Maybe they've cracked down since 2001.

Hi! I have a few questions.
1. I know you answered a question about how hard it is to get a 3.0 GPA but it was more from a Medill standpoint. How hard would it be to get a 3.0 in WSAS and a 3.2 in science classes?

Are you in any interesting clubs or activities that you really enjoy or would recommend for other people?

What are the fees associated with laundry?
Depends on where you live. In most dorms with laundry machines, it's $1 for a load of wash and $1 for a load to dry, if I remember correctly. You can put money on your Wildcard's cash stripe so you don't have to carry change around everywhere.

How much is it to print? If it affects anything, I'm an Engineering student - I know some places have different plans for Engineering students.
I would highly recommend getting your own printer. If you use the library in Tech (where many of your classes will be), I think it's like 1 cent a page, so not a huge deal, but you should still have your own way to print.

Just in regard to Medill grading, it is common for instructors to give out Medill F's. For those that don't know, you get an F for any factual error regardless of the quality of the rest of the copy. Even still, you don't receive an F (i.e. failing grade) for that assignment; you just have to do a rewrite on it.

Medill instructors ARE very picky and harsh when it comes to grading, but as the Daily pointed out the vast (and I mean VAST) majority of grades handed out are As and Bs.

haha medildos
