Ask questions about Cal Berkeley here!

Does Berkeley have an all-in-one internet portal? For example one website where you login, then you can access your e-mail, class webpages, gradebook, upload files? UCLA has MyUCLA, does Berkeley have a similar thing?

E-Mail: calmail.berkeley.edu
Class Webpages (Sometimes professors have their own pages, but majority are on this website): bspace.berkeley.edu
Gradebook, Regisration and Other Information: bearfacts.berkeley.edu

And for file hosting, I came across this the other day:
webfiles-help.berkeley.edu/index.html

Anyone use it?

Aww...sorry to hear that it didn't work out.

So have you tried taking up that foreign language again since then or does it just not fit anywhere at all in your schedule? And how many classes did you have?

I'm thinking of Japanese in particular (and no, I'm not an anime/manga junkie by any means).

I've got a couple of questions. Sorry if these have been answered before, I've searched around but havn't had the time to read through some of the loger threads.

I'm a transfer student that will be starting this fall. My major is Computer Science and I got into the College of L&S.

How hard is it to get one of the larger dorms? Extra space is pretty important to me since I like having a large monitor and I need space to do written work too.

Is it possible to mount a monitor on the wall so it doesn't take up desk space? I'm guessing that I can't put bolts in the wall, but perhaps I could create some sort of stand with a weight at the bottom. Does this sound plausible or absurd?

Do the male only dorms female friends of residents to visit and/or stay overnight? Are there any limitations to this, and would other residents be ok with this?

Are there any benefits to bringing a car? I know there is relatively good public transportation and I'm fine with biking, but would having a car make it easier to get to some of the more remote parts of campus quicker? How expensive is it to park around campus?

Is it possible for a transfer student to transfer from L&S to engineering?

the dorms are mostly the same size, clark kerr is bigger, bowles is kinda bigger. you'll have a desk to organize and do plenty of work on, you just gotta deal. It's all a lottery and pretty random.

no, you can't put bolts into the wall, you may have a shelf to put stuff like that one, but don't do anything too weird...cause it'll be obtuse and look stupid.

it's a public school, you can sleep with/have sex with whoever you want as long as your room-mate doesn't make too much of a fuss.

no...don't bring a car....it's stupid, u don't need it and it'll be hard to find parking.

yes, i think so

junior transfers are a lot of time put into Wada or into a Tranfer building in Unit 3... the space is larger than a regular size dorm room. Wada is more like an apartment. Wada is nice, you will like it there. I have friends with 2 bedroom "apartments" in Wada... Wada is part of Unit 2 and just a few years old.

Hi,
I've been gone from here for a while. In case you don't know, I'm a third year Berkeley student, and when I'm not studying for finals, I'm open to answering questions from recent admits. I don't have too much time to read through the whole thread. But if any of you have questions that haven't yet been answered, feel free to post here and I'll check back in a few days/hours/whatever. Welcome!

when do incoming freshman find out about housing?

you'll find out in like june or july i think, u apply by may 5th don't you?

I am admitted to cal for fall as a transfer student. My major is Environmental econ in college of natural resources. I am thinking of change my major to economics. Does Economics major accept a junior transfer student who is admitted to another major? What is the chance? Thank you!

Hey guys,

I was admitted as an intercampus transfer to cal for mcb, I was wondering how I'd find the workload-I talked to my friends who go to cal and they said it was very competitive as most students were pre-med.

How difficult would you rate the upper division bio classes at cal?

Thanks a lot.

okay so im taking courses in the FPF program and i was hoping someone could give me some feedback on these classes:
1. rhetoric R1A
2. integrative biology 33
3. psychology 1
4. asian ameican studies 20A
5. music 27
6. geography
7. english 31 AC

I don't think your chances are very good. First of all, have you taken any prereqs for the Economics major? Also realize that it is capped, so the major is not only hard to get into, but according to the College of Letters and Sciences:

Junior transfers (those with 60 or more units completed at the time of transfer to Berkeley) are given one semester - their first of the Berkeley campus - to apply for a capped major. The cap is effective beginning with transfer students admitted Fall 2006 or later.

The lower-div classes for MCB tend to be weeders. As you get into upper-div classes the grading should be a little easier but the material certainly won't be. MCB (the major) doesn't even require that many upper-div classes, so I think you'll be fine.

I'd encourage you to look through the other sticky regrading Spring Admits because we talked about this in there but I'll give you a quick run-down:

Probably similar to AP Language in that you'll analyze language, rhetorical devices/strategies, and so forth.

I think this one is about dinosaurs...pretty fun class, but pretty useless unless you're using it to fulfill the bio breadth requirement and absolutely do not want to take another bio class.

Pretty fun class, no papers just midterms/final out of the textbook. Lectures are pretty pointless. I think it's an easy class.

You'll probably do some reading about Asian Americans and write a few papers. Seems like a standard class.

No idea...

No idea...

Not sure if this fulfills the R&C requirement, but it fulfills the AC requirement which is nice, and also the Arts and Literature breadth requirement.

Hello everyone, and great thread by the way. I was recently accepted to the College of Letters and Sciences, my intended Major is Psychology, although i guess 'we' are all undeclared. Here are my questions:
1) I completed all the assist.org pre-reqs for the Berkeley Psychology Major, have a good GPA 3.8 and am curious about declaring Psychology as my major- as in; How do i know what classes to sign up for at CALSO if i don't know what my major is, or , what my major requires?
2) what do we need to bring with us to CALSO, because i accessed the online orientation that is 'due' at some point but when 'choosing' classes that interest me- i found, I had taken them already. The orientation thing says i should bring a list of classes that i want to take and found on the site, but i don't know how to find any for transfers.?
3)I live in Berkeley, and am curious about meeting w/ faculty/adviser and for seeking advice. Where can i go?-if any where.

Boscoboy: This link will give you the information you need:

i'm a transfer student applying from a california community college. uchicago is my top choice, but they deferred me, so i won't find out their decision until mid-may. if it turns out to be a rejection, would i be screwed turning in my SIR to berkeley that late? i'm thinking of living in a co-op; will it be really hard to get into one by that point?

should i perhaps send in my SIR to berkeley now, even before chicago gets back to me? i do think both schools are great, but chicago has the benefit of being close to family. will sending in my SIR to berkeley make chicago automatically reject me?

haas transfer student. submitted my SIR, but what about the paper they mailed me, the "Admission Acceptance" letter. Do i have to mail that in to? I would assume that my SIR took care of everything that is in the Admission Acceptance Letter.

to magicsong: Economics is a restricted major, so getting in might be harder. You can still try to do that. Talk to the advisors in Campbell Hall. Environmental econ is also a good major. I'm sure you could take classes in either department.

to ceramicpiggybank: Geography 10 is a good class. Depends on the professor, but it's a nice introduction to the world in general.
