Ask questions about Cal Berkeley here!

Hi, I was thinking of transferring to Berkeley to finish my undergraduate studies (majors possibly in Sociology and Political Sciences). I haven't finished high school, yet, and I am from Peru. Are there any chances of getting a full or half scholarship if you are an International Student? Also, if there's anyone from my country or South America studying there for an undergraduate that you know please tell me and help me get in contact with them please. Thanks!

SHIP or not SHIP?
I'm an incoming freshmen trying to decide whether I should get SHIP health insurance or be comforted with just UHS. (<a href="http://www.uhs.berkeley.edu/students.../welcome.shtml%5B/url%5D">http://www.uhs.berkeley.edu/students.../welcome.shtml</a>)
What's your experience on Berkeley Health Insurance programs?

i don't use it, then again, i get free insurance from my mom's union. i hear there's lots of problems wit it, but if ur current insurance is good and cheaper than SHIP, then keep it, i don't think they're much different.

Did anyone interested in the PLUS loan get rejected? I'm worried about my parent's credit...

so typically, how many classes do students take per semester?

as of now as a freshman this coming fall, i'm probably majoring in MCB. i'm planning on taking chem, math, english, art but i also want to take 2 languages (french and japanese). too many classes i think. how are language classes at Cal anyways? is the workload for the languages overwhelming? do i take a placement test to decide what level of language i'm in?

also, how is the workload for art classes? how challenging are the art classes?

Are the class results that come up on the course catalogue the only ones available? Because Chem 1a only shows one professor... where are all the others???

Does Berkeley look at ECs and unweighted gpa a lot? I think I will be able to maintain over 4.2 weighted but sort of low UW gpa.

They definitely look at ECs.

Like all schools, they look over all aspects of the application. Given the number of applications, you can accuratly assume that most attention is given to high scores and gpa.

How are the nightclubs in and around Berkeley? When I transfer there in the fall, I won't be 21 yet so preferably 18+ clubs? How is the music? How is the ratio? Does one need to go to the city to get a good clubbin' experience?

there's really only one in berkeley, blakes, on telegraph, from what i hear it's OK. people go clubbing mostly in SF, there's lots of groups that go, or you can go on your own, but just remember u gotta get back and BART stops running @ like 12:30 or so. from what i hear, those are pretty fun

San Francisco has a pretty good clubbing scene (not up to LA or NY standard), but not far behind either.

Blakes is a grill, bar, and "nightclub" which has occasional bands and dancing. There's also Shattuck Downlow and few other bars around town.

The scene is what you want to make of it. Its not all that hot, but with friends even an otherwise lame night can become one of the best nights of your life. And you sure have more than enough people to become friends with at Cal...

Just curious, how common is lsd/k in berkeley? Could I just stroll down telegraph and find anything I want?

i dunno what k is, but you can find w/e you want in berkeley. ask around and you can prolly find some acid somewhere, shrooms are easy to find...pot....well pot is like shopping for candy, it's everywhere. co-ops are a good start.
happy hunting!

thanks man.

dunno where to ask...might as well ask here (sorry if it's a stupid question haha)

if i want to go into optometry...which major do you guys think will be the most...beneficial? biology? chem? thx =]

good question cathersx3!
I actually wanted to ask that too!

and also...what do you guys think of the Rhetoric course? (RHETOR R001A)
does it have a nasty curve?
because I want to fulfil my pre-requisites for Haas undergrad Business, I need to take a writing/literature course. If Rhetoric is not a good course to take, what is? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I think the ones I know who want to do optometry are the ones in MCB or other bio/chem-related majors. What you can do is look up the optometry schools you're interested in, see what courses they require, and search around the major prereqs and find one that has a lot of overlap.

This might also depend on the professor. Go on the berkeley schedule website, search for the course and see which professors are teaching it, and look them up on ratemyprofessors.com for comments on the class.

Does anyone know anything about the Chem 3B professor for the summer? His name is Neil Viernes and I believe he is new to Cal. Can't find any reviews on him in ratemyprofessors.com. Also, is Chem 3B usually curved (a previous post said that Chem 3A is always curved). How hard is it to get a good grade (like at least a B) in the class? Last question ... does anyone know the GSI's for Chem and who might be a good choice? Thx.

More questions here! lol

What is the difference between the Chemistry major offered at L&S and that offered in the College of Chemistry? Is it just the B.S./B.A. degrees?

If I want to apply to Haas, and if I take very easy courses, then would that be a disadvantage? (even if I get a good mark on the course?) For example, if I take a renowned easy course like German R1A, would Haas look down on it? I'm choosing my courses for freshmen right now, so...

Is a double-major in Chemistry (from College of Chemistry) and Haas Business Administration possible practically? What about in terms of difficulty level?

Thanks!
