jennaluna: I'm not exactly sure about tolman to kroeber, but I have gone from unit 1 to soda hall which is about the same distance, but more uphill and that takes me at least 13 minutes assuming im speed walking my top speed. you could always opt to be a little late to class (5-10 mins).

Hopefully I'm just not doing it right, because if not, that's severely limiting in my ability to customize my schedule.

Upper division classes often -are- offered by only one professor. Get used to it -- it's a good thing. It's what you wait for when getting rid of your GEs. Instead of a one-size-fits-all class meant to satisfy the needs of hundreds of students at any given time, it's individualized and carries the particular flavor of whoever's teaching it this semester.

For the record, though, I see that Spanish 2 has 5 sections, so there must be something going on. The -teachers- sometimes aren't specified (especially for language classes, which are almost always taught by GSIs) until the semester begins, but there are definitely 5 times and 5 sections.

Thanks Misterreach...that helps...I am going to test it out and see how it will be, but yeah I will probably just be a little late...

I just realized I have classes from 11 am to 2 pm this fall. Any idea where I could get lunch after 2 because the dc's lunch hours end at 2 pm. Or are they still open past 2?

Campus restaurants. Ramona, GBC, etc.

ahhh yeah, thanks.

Does anyone know if we can apply for theme housing after having received a housing offer? I'm not sure when the deadline for theme housing is. Currently I already hold a non-theme housing offer - can I still apply for theme housing? Or is it too late?

Also, international student orientation is on the 18th, but move in is only on the 23rd and 24th. Where can we stay during this time since our dorms will still be off limits??

Thanks :)

For textbooks, where do most students go, the Cal student store, or Neds?(I got this neds thing at orientation and it has all these offers and coupons and stuff). Which one should I go to?

casrol: They go where it's convenient.

My usual MO is to go to the campus bookstore to grab ISBNs (have yet to be stopped by an employee for doing so), check the internet for good prices, order the ones that are worth saving on and return to the campus bookstore or Ned's to pick up the rest as cheap as possible. I really think of them interchangeably, so I only go to Ned's if the bookstore doesn't have a copy of something I want.

hello cal students, i'm interested to apply as a freshman for fall 2009.

is there any kind of early decision or early action for Berkeley? I can't seem to find any information.

No.

Everyone applies to any/all UC schools via a single application in the period Nov 1 to Nov 30, then RD decisions are posted at various dates depending upon the UC campus.

oh thanks. are international students disadvantaged over california residents in terms of admission?

Any past or continuing transfer or re-entry students here? I'm an incoming transfer/re-entry student who is considering taking one of the TRSP seminars this fall, but the meeting times are not very convenient for me. If you have taken one of these classes, I would appreciate your opinion about them. Helpful or not? Useful or waste of time? Thanks!

Hey guys,

Does anyone know how it is possible that a lecture is not full (300/400, for instance) but all the discussions are full? What does this mean, that I can't sign up for that lecture?

cloudone: Absolutely. California residents have priority over everyone else. Then OOS. Then international. Look up the admission statistics, but I highly doubt that internationals make up more than 5% of total admissions. Plus you will be required to pay "out of state" tuition, which the university does NOT award any kind of financial aid for (and yes, that means they won't even give you loans to cover it).

thatgirltoo: Transfer, but didn't take the seminar. I don't think I've suffered too much from the lack.

Quesce: If the discussions are full AND REQUIRED, you will be unable to sign up for the class. It's unfair if they say there are 100 more spaces but no more sections, but that's how it goes. If, however, the discussions are NOT compulsory (though I can't think of a course that offers them doing this, off-hand), you are free to register if there is space in the lecture.

Sorry if it's been answered already, but how's the issue of...:

1) Trash? Do people have small trashcans in their room, and then they empty their trash in the little holes in the Unit walls?

2) Washing clothes? Is there a washing machine/dryer nearby the dorms? How is the pricing?

3) Bathrooms? Guys and girls share the same bathroom, right?

Thanks!

What's your housing? For a Unit 2 high rise:

Each room has a trash can/bin that you can empty using the appropriate chute in the wall by the elevator.

Even floors (except maybe 4th floor) have laundry rooms. If I remember correctly, dryers are $1.00 and washing machines are $1.50. They only accept change and there's no change machine in the building. Some of them also have a tendency to eat your change. So, I'd recommend using your Cal 1 Debit Card instead (there's a card reader in the laundry room to use your Cal 1 Card).

All the bathrooms are co-ed, except for one the ones on the same-sex floors. The latter are technically only for their respective sex, but girls sometimes use the all guys bathroom (and guys obviously don't care), and I and others have occasionally used the all girls bathroom (of course, you'd want to either ask a girl on the floor if it'd be okay or, if nobody is around, announce your entrance & wait for a response before entering).

I live in Unit 3 doubles.

About the clothing, is there anywhere near the Units that are cheaper than that? Or is that the generally accepted price for cleaning clothes?

If you get waitlisted for a discussion (when lecture is still open), are you likely to get into that discussion (if there are <4 people on the waitlist).

Castel: don't bother going outside the Units. It's not worth it.

unshunreshun: yeah probably, depends on the class though. If the class is pretty large, you have a good chance. If there are a lot of discussions students tend to move around and it's very rare to have a discussion that's so full it can't accept more students.
