He can get tons of parking south of MLK and east of University. I lived off of Carleton, was always easy. As long as it's not the beginning of the month, he won't have to worry about sweepers. And since he's only going to leave it for a week, he shouldn't have a lot of luggage to carry. He can walk to Ashby BART or even Shattuck BART from there.

grasspuppet: well in that case, if you can get into leconte (some entrances may be open), theres a reading room on the second floor south east side (relative when facing the main entrance).

jose7r: search up the forums. people have said that ieor is a fun major. and i think its only 1 floor, but whats the big deal?

How's the Civil Engineering program here?

how cold does it get? does it rain a lot?
is it much different than so cal weather?

... just wondering if i need like REALLY warm clothes or what

For winter be prepared for low 40's during nighttime with highs in the 50's to 60's during the day.

(Berkeley, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

Occasional winter storms that bring in heavy downpours w/ wind chill

You'll need warm clothes, especially if you plan on going to SF... during the summer months the avg high temp is only 66 F (june-aug) winter gets colder and wetter

While SF is quite cold in the summer, this area is famously varied with microclimates separated by only a few miles, such that it can be 65 in the city of SF, 80 on the peninsula and almost 100 in the central valley. Swings of 20 degrees as you drive around are not rare. The best clothing strategy if you are traveling around is to use layers. Pop off the sweater when you leave SF for Berkeley, for example.

How often do people bring their laptops with them around campus?

Do people generally steer clear from Targus brands so they don't attract attention?

I choose not to use a bag that's obviously a laptop bag because I figured broadcasting "hey, I'm walking around with a $2000 electronic" wasn't the best idea, but I do use a targus branded backpack, and plenty of people use laptop bags. If you do it in the daytime you'll pretty much never have an issue. If you do it in the nighttime, you're still pretty unlikely to have an issue -- I just wouldn't feel safe in some places with a laptop bag in the dark.

Laptops are ubiquitous.

Some North Face backpacks have pockets for laptops. They are very popular around campus.

...you could always put black electrical tape over the brand names

and North Face backpacks scream for people to rob them. Its not like they're cheap bags.

Do students generally need comforters for their beds? I went to CalSo and all I had was the bedsheets and I thought it was relatively comfortable. Are the "egg crate paddings" useful as well?

The mattress pads from Target work really well ($20) and are really comfortable (if you like soft beds).

It does get cold during winter so thicker blankets would be good. There is a heater but your roommate might not want it on as high or something b/c he or she might have the thicker blankets.

What textbook does Math 53 use? I checked on the Cal Bookstore website and it gave me: "MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS (Custom Math 53)".

The custom part scares me; do they have a custom textbook for each semester?

castel: don't worry. the custom basically means that they've cut a 1/3 chunk from the full calculus book (1a-1b-53) and just given you a small 53 book. Its small and cheap(relatively at least)

@misterreach: I see, so I can't buy it at a third-party store? :[

The required material for Physics 7B is listed as Physics (V2) Pkg (w/ Workbook & Mastering Physics) by Giancoli ($109.25).
Any idea what this is and whether I can get it cheaper elsewhere? :S

castel: you could buy it at Ned's on bancroft right across the street from the cal bookstore. or if you're feeling up to it you can buy the complete text on amazon marketplace pretty cheap, but be wary that its the same edition

narsil: check this out http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-berkeley/516250-physics-7a-books.html

I know it's for 7A, but the same applies. and if you don't like amazon, ned's and some other services (some book exchange thing...dont know much about it just search on the forums) are other options.

I've enrolled in all of the units I'll be taking and my bill has been sent to CARS and paid by FA (according to CARS). When will BearFacts update to say that I'm "Registered" instead of "Not Registered"?

Do students bring drying racks to their dorm rooms so they can dry their towels?
