They first go for grants/scholarship then they reduce loans/work study. The reason is that Berkeley balances free money awarded to its students with debt money that needs to be earned and paid back. This ensures that students get some load off their back, just not a free ride like most private universities.

Re: Recommended Books

I plan on taking NutraSci 10 in the Fall and on the Cal Student Store Textbook Search it lists 3 materials/books, two recommended and one required. Well, the required one is only $15.75, but the two recommended books are around $100. How necessary are these recommended books and should I buy them?

how hard would it be to transfer from the environmental school to letters and sciences?

When i went to myberkeleyapp, the status of my transcript says: “received-final,” and i read that it means i have met my conditions and my admission is no longer provisional. So does that mean there aren’t any more possibilities that they may cancel my admission?

I’m worry because i had a D first semester then a B second semester, and i heard that colleges usually take a while to review transcripts.

So the “received-final” means that i no longer have to worry?
Let’s say, IF, they see that some of my conditions aren’t met? How will they let us know that they cancel our admission? Will the status still say “received-in Review?”

Hello to everyone,
So I was wondering if its ok to have to finals on the same day
For Math 1A the final is on Dec. 12 8-11a and for Philos 104 its Dec.12 12:30-3:30p.
I have been searching to take alternate classes to not have this problem but when I looked up ratings for the prof the ones teaching those classes seem to be most “normal” profs.
And is it possible to walk from the Valley LSB to Barker in 10 mins. because i was looking at a map and they seem to be far away from each other.

Yes, I’ve been able to walk from VLSB to Barker. Also, I’ve been able to do finals back to back. However, sometimes professors/GSIs do have make-up finals and I’ve been able to take advantage of that so I don’t have back to back finals either.

have anyone taken espm 50ac and/or italian studies 40 with fuller?

can anyone comment on the courses? (workload, grading etc)

thanks

Is everyone at Berkeley a super talented genius or are there some average kids, too. Based on the stats of people on this website, I’m kind of afraid that everyone is going to be much smarter, better prepared and more accomplished than me.

Berkeley seems like the super academic kids who didn’t have that extra edge/luck to get into an ivy. And as a result are probably insanely hard working.

Are there any people like me who was completely prepared to go to a lower tier UC because I figured that was the best I could do and was completely shocked to find out that I got in Berkeley?

So we only apply to one of the schools? And can transfer into another if we want to… or at least can attempt to do this. I think I asked this before.

Is it possible to move out of the residence halls after one semester? How much is the penalty for this?

@Agneisse: um, i think all the halls are 1 year contracts, and the fee is $300 for breaking that. IMO, totally worth it if you decide to leave early enough in the contract AND find a new place that’ll make up for the lost $300. oh, and end up hating your roommate, like i did! :o

Hey, I have a 2.8 GPA for Masters in UC. A 1520 GRE. and grt proj rec and recco’s.
U think I can get into Cal for M.S in Civil?

@ abbccc, no, you’re not the only one, not by a long shot. A desire to learn and question is all it takes, plus a little confidence in yourself. There’s always gonna be people smarter than you and not as smart as you.

I’ve said this before, but anyway, stats are a high school thing. College is not high school. While solid stats do indicate something, to find out who’re the most impressive in terms of intelligence, I generally have to speak to them in person.

Plus the engineers and others who chose Berkeley over Ivies, like some I know, but also tack on several good students who know how to have a great time and certainly aren’t *super * hard working. It’s a large school, and there are many people. Reason for incoming frosh not to be intimidated. Though if you want to look for very smart people, you will not be disappointed.

I’m going to be a senior in high school, and I’m interested in Berkeley. Is it right for me?
Currently I’m unsure of my major. I will either enter Berkeley as a freshman, or (most likely) transfer after 2 years at another university.
I am interested in majors in every area. I love music, writing, theater, anthropology, linguistics, marine biology, physics, computers, and engineering.

Now, I know Berkeley is well reputed for science and engineering, but how is their music? Are any of you music majors or minors?

Also, are there many opportunities to take classes outside of your major? And how do credits transfer to Berkeley? Thanks.

Oh, also, do they have a Marine Biology major? I wasn’t able to find marine biology or oceanography.

SelenaMJ:

There’s a marine science major which is interdisciplinary and offered jointly with the integrative biology and earth and planetary science departments.
[Earth & Planetary Science, UC Berkeley](http://eps.berkeley.edu/undergraduate/marinescience.php)

If you want to be a marine biologist, I suggest majoring in biology (possibly through the College of Natural Resources or through Integrative Biology in the Letters & Science Department). Focus on the marine aspect in graduate school. You don’t want to get too specific right away.

Integrative Bio major. Look at the “areas of focus” section:
[Requirements for the Major](http://ib.berkeley.edu/student/undergrad/major/)

College of Natural Resources Majors:
[Departments and Academic Programs](Majors & Minors | UC Berkeley Rausser College of Natural Resources)

Oh, cool, thanks. Marine science seems to be equivalent to oceanography. And thanks for the advice about biology.

My question about music still stands, for any music majors out there. :)

Does anyone know what the Generic Costco Minifridge is like (size/volume + presence of a freezer?) and approx. how much does it cost? I don’t have a Costco membership and won’t have a car so will be unlikely to go there much freshman year, and I’m not really sure which fridge on the Costco website is the GCM so frequently spoken of (:
