Ask Questions about CMU

Hey! I'm a freshman at CMU. I'm a Biology major following the Pre-Med track in Mellon College of Science. If anyone has questions feel free to ask away!

I have a question - how is the dating scene and normal college social life at CMU? I have heard it is non existant but am not sure if that is true, false or somewhere in the middle.

My son is intelligent, but well rounded and I certainly do not want him hanging around playing video games all weekend!

how are the interactions between different colleges?

oh and are the students really as nerdy as people say?

@mumof2boyz: The myth that the dating scene sucks is just that-- a myth. There’s always something to do, and with the advent of facebook event planning has become much easier and it’s easy to get the word of mouth around. I’d say that people’s biggest complaint is you have to put your “CMU goggles” on-- in other words, a girl or guy who might be a 3 or 4 on the attractiveness scale jumps up to a 6 or 7. But in reality, it seems like that’s becoming something of the past. My tour guide last spring, a senior, stated it best: “I think each successive class of freshmen is getting hotter and more social. Sucks that I’m going to miss out on it.”

If you want to find nerdy people, you’re not going to have to look far. But on the whole, a lot of CMU kids are nerdy AND cool. We dress well, work out, love the sunlight and know how to party, but we’re also not opposed to a game of Magic: The Gathering or playing pokemon on our gameboys.

@ilovepanda: the interactions between colleges are great. It’s not hard to find friends from every college.

The other big mistake that I’ve heard complaints about from people was: “I’m a freshman at college. I stay in my room all the time playing counterstrike and world of warcraft. Why aren’t dozens of attractive people flocking to my room to befriend me/why don’t I have a girlfriend/boyfriend yet? I don’t understand! CMU’s social life sucks. I’m so alone!”

I think the logical fallacy speaks for itself. ;)

does food really suck at CMU?

How are the dorms at CMU?

They say the food is good now because of the new vendor. I personally like Gingers the best.

Capo17,
since you are a bio major this may be a good question for you… If you decided you might want to get a degree in biomedical engineering, could you make that happen somehow from the MCS? Reason I ask is that my son wanted biomed eng but got waitlisted to CIT, he did get accepted to MCS, so he will start with bio if not admitted to CIT off the wait list. Thanks for answering questions here, it has more impact than you may think…

does food really suck at CMU?
Repeating his question.

@garage12 - No. It used to suck heavily. This past year they switched food vendors to CulinArt and now it kind of rocks. We have a sushi bar, a Chipotle mockup, a grill that makes hamburgers for you, a 24-hour breakfast diner, Gingers sandwich deli (aka the best thing ever) and others. Additionally we now have a partnership with Eat n’ Park and Vocellis Pizza so you can spend meal plan money there  there are also rumors that housing is planning to put in new eating venues, but I don’t know where or what.

@TomBor: Dorms are good depending on where you live. If you file your housing deposit late and get London Terrace Apartments, your life will be like an endless black void of depression and despair. If you file on time, you’ll probably get your first or second choice dorm, and they’re all very nice. Mudge & Morewood are considered the nicest, with Stever in third and Donner fourth.

@Justthedad: No, you can’t get the double major, but you can definitely get the minor. In order to have a BME double major you have to be a student at CIT.

^ When is “on time” exactly?
I don’t want to pay any deposit until I get the rest of my university decisions, obviously.

Another question - I understand that CMU doesn’t offer straight EE or CE, but a combined course of ECE. Is this limiting or liberating, in the sense that CE is a part of the broader EE?
Does it limit future career options, or simply adds to the options?

EDIT: Oh! and would it be possible to minor in some business courses while doing the ECE major? Not in terms of course load but rather in terms of “is it literally possible”?

Oh yeah, how are the prices at CMU? Like for food? I last heard it was 2/3 dollars for a pizza.

My question is what should one bring to CMU that they wouldn’t think to bring to another uni?

@TomBor: Make sure to file at least a couple weeks before the housing deposit deadline and you’ll be just fine. I’m not familiar with EE/CE programs at other universities, so I couldn’t say how our ECE compares, I’ll leave that question to someone else.

@Rewind: Food’s not exactly cheap, but your meal plan will come with ‘blocks’, so it’s doubtful you’ll ever have to pay for a slice of pizza unless you want it on DineX or something. Each block is supposedly equivalent to $7.50, but you can score awesome meals with a block-- for example, the sushi man is for some reason weirdly fond of people who come to get sushi often and will sometimes make you dragon rolls or rangoons on a block. (Easily a $12 to $15 value.) On the pizza block you get two slices plus a garlic roll plus a drink.

Hello CMU. I love sushi.

So I was looking at the latest courses for Fall 2010…see that Mackey isn’t teaching 127 (he has a FB fan page …so I guess he is the guy to take it with) …does anyone know if he’s gone for the year or just Fall.

I’ve heard he’s the best- and also heard that the Asst-teaching prof assigned for the fall is too easy – so that you’re not prepared for Great Ideas 251 which follows.

Any inputs from CS majors-- should I wait for Mackey and not take concepts in the fall with the lady who is going to be teaching it?

Also, which prof do you recommend for 15123?

Where can you see a link to the topics for Freshman english?

So would it be tough to xfer into CIT from MCS after a semester if you decided you wanted biomed eng rather than biology at MCS?

How’s the greek life

How’s the work load in SCS

PS. Thanks so much for answering these questions!
