Ask Questions about CWRU Here!

I’m an alumnae from a couple decades ago so FWIW now…
I did work study when I was there as well. At that time, there was a binder available with one page sheets of all the different work study jobs available. I chose to take a job doing some basic grunt work in a lab over at UH one semester. It transitioned into a 2 yr stint in that lab where I got to know the researchers fairly well & as time progressed, I asked if I could be involved in the research itself by the 2nd year. Because of the relationships I’d developed, I ended up with research experience by the time I applied for graduate school.

Like everyone always says, it’s always about what you do with the opportunities presented in your path. You can choose to go with the flow or you can choose to create your flow

@nirvanafan007 , thanks for your response. Thanks to all who have posted their opinions and information here.

Hey guys, I have a few questions about getting more FA from case

I was accepted EA a few weeks ago with a decent amount of merit scholarship, but I hadn’t submitted a CSS profile in time. Will I still be eligible for a FA package from CWRU if I fill out FAFSA?

Also, are there any other forms of aid that Case hands out? (beyond separate scholarships that you have to apply for)-- for example, If I live on campus as opposed to commuting, will they give out grants?

How much of a loan did most Case Students take out, and was that loan worth it for most people? How easy is it to pay off loans if I major in CS or Engineering?

My son has chosen Case and he has decided to major in Engineering Physics. He has acquired AICE Diploma from Cambridge International Examinations with Advance Level Math, Physics and Chemistry. He is good at all the three subjects and has been performing well academically till date. How do students from Cambridge find Engineering at Case? Are that specific preparations that are required?

He should be fine! If he isn’t placed into advance Calculus, he can always start with Calc 1, Chem 1 and Physics 1.

Case Western’s graduation rate seems to be a bit low for the quality of student that the school attracts. Can someone tell me why you think that is happening?

From what I saw online, it kind of looks like Case doesn’t really have that many main quads or green spaces and that the buildings are kind of scattered on the streets. Are there any park like spaces or campus centers with gardens and grassy areas??

They have this quadrangle where most of the science and engineering buildings are located. There’s also this field. (The building is the Tinkham Veale University Center, which is supposed to look like the Titanic sinking or something. The iceberg is on the other side.)

In addition to the open space on campus, the university sits next to a very large city park (University Circle) that includes a large lake and open spaces around it, as well as several museums. This park area is directly next to the university, so a very easy walk.

How is Case Western’s business school for undergrad?

https://weatherhead.case.edu/degrees/ —look at the rankings. Weatherhead School of Mgt is a top business school.

Hi, Ihave just recently been accepted to Case and have some questions about the school:

 1. Can I apply for the MSM-Finance program by my freshman's year? In case I can't apply for the program in my 1st year, can I ask professors/counselors to help me create a schedule to prepare for the program (take more classes in 1,2nd year to reduce the workload in the 3,4th year, etc.)
 2. As I am an international student, travelling home for winter break would cost me quite a lot. So can I stay in the school campus in Winter Break to save my travelling expense ?
 3. Are there many activities for me to do at Case ?

Thank you for helping me in advance

 1. https://weatherhead.case.edu/degrees/undergraduate/academics/finance/integrated-program

 2. Ask at housing@case.edu or international@case.edu but I read “Residential Colleges, second year housing and university-operated Greek houses close during winter break only. The residence halls are open during fall, Thanksgiving and spring break. During winter break, students may leave their belongings in their room. Upperclass housing is open during all breaks, including winter break.”

Ask someone if there is a program for over the break. Also there maybe off campus programs…for example, “Christmas International House” found at http://2013-cih.azurewebsites.net/Locations/Location%20Home.aspx

 1. Yes!!! The International Student Services has many activities, see: http://students.case.edu/international/

Have a question about working on campus. Generally for an Engineering UG student how many hours it is possible oto work per week without impacting one’s studies?

No answer to the last question, but I’ll ask another: When we visited, I got a very strong pre-professional vibe. Would you say that’s the dominant mode, or is it more varied? How is Case for a kid who skews more talky/thinky and doesn’t yet have a defined career goal?

@porcupine98 Case is awesome for someone who doesn’t have a defined career goal…yes, there are many pre-professional kids, but recall that the Western Reserve part of the name refers to Western Reserve College which was a Liberal Arts school. Also, Case has a single-door admissions policy…so when you get admitted you are admitted to the entire Univ…that is, School of Engineering, School of Arts and Sciences, School of Nursing and School of Management. So if s/he decides they want to go into business, there is no “applying to the business school”. Clearly if you have a particular interest you should start with those pre-requisites, but if you change your mind you can switch majors.

How’s the advising? Academic and professional? For a kid just learning how to put themselves out there?

Advising is very hit or miss. You adviser freshman year is your sages professor who may or may not know anything about what you want to do. After you declare, your adviser becomes a professor in your major. This person may or may not be up to date on what you need to complete your major. I have been given wrong information by both my adviser and my dean before, so you need to be careful who you listen to. I almost had to change my schedule 2 hours before the drop/add deadline my last semester in school because no one had any clue how to handle a graduation requirement. Typically, if I’m confused I ask other students what their adviser told them or ask the department head (department heads are the best possible person to go to).

I don’t know much about professional advice (pre-med, pre-vet…). I do know they hold info session for what you need to do to get into grad/med/law… school.

For someone like you who is undecided, there is a choices fair in the fall freshman are required to go to. All the majors have a booth and you can ask them whatever you want. In terms of professional vibe (not entirely sure what you mean), other than some obnoxious pre-meds, you probably won’t be able to tell who is pre-professional. Lots of people are undecided coming to Case and honestly about 70% of my friends have changed their major at some point. Many people who come in pre-professional don’t end up being pre-professional. The reverse is much more uncommon.

On the other hand, many majors have a curriculum well spelled out…so check of the courses as you go and take them in the suggested order. For example,
