Ask Questions about Lehigh

Thank you so very much to the Moderator and to Mike! This thread was hands down the best I have read anywhere while my son navigated his search and once he was at Lehigh. Congratulations to Mike on your next steps.

Thank you for re opening this thread!

Mike, I join everyone else when I say congratulations on acceptance at JHU! Fantastic!!! My son also had JHU as one of his final 2 choices, but has fallen head over heels for MIT. So he will be pursuing his doctorate at MIT in August!

All of his friends have done so well and I cannot say enough about the reputation of Lehigh in both the graduate and corporate communites.

Does anyone know about the lab policy at Lehigh? Can a chemical engineer major for say, use materials that would normally be used for a biological engineer major and perform a lab at any time?

When we visited Lehigh, we didn’t see that much diversity, even though they claimed as a diversity college. Wouldn’t that be a problem?

Hi I am applying to Lehigh ED this year :), I was wondering do you think the Professors are great? Do they try to get to know you? (I am trying to get out of intro courses because I really like small classes and teachers that try to get to know you) I am interested in the Engineering college, I read some places that students in the P.C. Rossin College find their teachers boring. I am worried a little bit about this… mostly because I love this school soo much…When I walked on campus I knew this is where I wanted to be.

You read “some place” the professors are boring? Most of the time students with an axe to grind are the ones that take the time to post something negative. Usually it is a student who got a poor grade. LOL.

If you want to have a personal relationship with your professors you should take the time to get to know them. Go to their office hours. Professors at any school love to have students take an interest in their course. It is also the best way to network. Professors like to help students find research positions and internships. Letters of recommendation are always better if the professor knows you. My son had quite a few professors go out of their way to help him.

I know lots of kids who went to other colleges and had a terrible time trying to get into Engineering classes - even core courses. At Lehigh my son always got the courses he needed - the semester he needed them. Scheduling was very easy.

Lehigh is also really great about letting the students be really creative about minors. My son stayed sophomore summer and took summer school classes - some courses you can take online from home during the summer. He was able to get 2 minors along with his Engineering major.

That feeling you got when you walked on campus - listen to that. It truly is an incredible place.

Thank you, yeah I read it on niche, college prowler I just really want to make sure that this is the right place for me. I was worried about the partying at first, but after hearing that there is choice housing, and that there is really no pressure to drink I feel better. I am trying to find input on the things that really matter to me. The quality and closeness of the professors being at the top of that list. Again thank you for all your help :)

Hey, is there a big difference between applying early decision vs early decision 2 vs regular decision?

When you apply Early Decision 1 or 2 it is a binding commitment to attend Lehigh if you get accepted. Lehigh has the second Early Decision for those students who aren’t able to get their application in by the first Early Decision date. If you get accepted you must withdrawal in other college applications that you have submitted. You cannot apply Early Decision to more than 1 school! Early Decision applications are help you when you might not have the top grades or scores but are certain Lehigh is the school for you.

@kikkydee , thank you, I’m considering Lehigh as a reach school because of my lack of important positions in extracurriculars, everything else is on par with other Lehigh applicants. Is it wise to apply Early Decision to reach schools?

Absolutely use the Early Decision for a reach school! Just make sure you and your parents have the financial resources to accept whatever financial package Lehigh gives you.

My son was an engineering student at Lehigh. He did not participate in ANY high school activities. He did volunteer at a non-profit and had an interesting part-time job for awhile. I think the “important positions” in extracurriculars are way over rated by high school students. I think it is way better when a student follows their own passions and interests.

Good luck and start a thread for the Early Decision applicants!

@kikkydee or anyone else, I have sent 2 of my SAT scores, but my 3rd SAT score is being released on the 23rd of Dec… Since the deadline for applications is January 1st, should I rush my 3rd SAT score report?

@IndubitableDan my guidance counselor vocally told my entire class that rushing your scores is the biggest scam in existence, and doesn’t change anything. She said most colleges dont mind getting scores after the deadline and that collegeboard doesn’t actually send them any faster. Here is a CC thread on it as well. <a href=“Do NOT Rush Your Score Report Thread - Test Preparation - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-act-tests-test-preparation/623759-do-not-rush-your-score-report-thread.html</a>
just an opinion of course! Good Luck

@poetrymusiclover , my counselor said the same thing yesterday. Thank you for the help.

anyone, I am have a question about admissions. I originally wanted to go into the bio/biochem field, but my AP Physics C class is starting to get very interesting, for I am starting to see many biomed eng connections btw my ap bio & phys class this year. Is it much more difficult to get into lehigh at rossin eng school than science/art school? Can I go in as an undecided, and then decide if I want to go eng or bio/biochem? Is the IBE program very difficult to get into? How does a premed track affect all of this? @poetrymusiclover & @kikkydee seem fairly knowledgeable about the stuff going on at Lehigh and how it works.

@IndubitableDan from what I know it isnt too bad to switch majors,I believe its harder to get into the Rossin College but im not sure by how much. I remember on my tour they talked an awful lot about how its ok to change your mind. I went undecided and applied to the IBE program. I got into the program and yes that honors program is tough to get into, my friend with similar stats to mine didnt get in, 40 people or so get in. If you want a program like the IBE or the IDEAs Honors Programs than I would apply to those first because I think after your frist year you can try to get in but only a few like 4-5 students get in after freshman year and you may be behind at this point. Again this is what I’ve gathered I could be terribly mistaken, and anyoe who wants to correct me feel free!! Im new to it all as well!!!

@poetrymusiclover and anyone else, can I apply to both schools (rossin engineer and arts/sciences), because common-app won’t let me.

@IndubitableDan‌ You can only apply separately, but if you want to combine the two, thats what IDEAS is. Also, you can get accepted to Lehigh and then denied from IBE or IDEAS, so applying to these selective groups won’t lessen your chances of acceptance. In my interview, I was told to apply to IDEAS even if I was only barely considering it–you can always opt out.
