Ask questions about Northeastern here!

I’m a student here in the Honors program @c0llegegirl. I sent an ACT score of 33 in, not stellar at all…had a lot of volunteer experience that I focused on in my app along with a heavy load of sports in HS. Not sure exactly how the program selects and, as @PengsPhils said it’s certainly not based on stats alone. I’ve met a number of students here that didn’t get into the honors program yet have much higher academic scores than I do. May be luck of the draw, or something else. Since its admissions, I can’t say anything for sure.

Does anyone know if NEU gives sibling advantage? My brother is a current student there and my stats aren’t very strong.

No advantage for siblings.

On 3/18/14 you posted that you were accepted at Northeastern. Are you using your siblings CC account? You need to set up your own CC account.

We were told that a couple computer science students were trying to start a computer programming team to compete in the ACM-ICPC collegiate competition, but my son, who is a CCIS major hasn’t been able to find out anything about this. This would usually be done in the ACM club but my son doesn’t think that they have anything to do with it. Any ideas on finding out who may know more about this? @PengsPhils @nanotechnology

I recalled seeing signs about it around west village h this spring. The best way to find out would probably be to post in the Northeastern Computer Science Facebook page. Lots of super useful people there.

@apccpa

The facebook page would be a good place to start. I would guess that some of those students are also in the CS club called HACKS. They meet Thursday’s at around 8:30 if he wanted to stop by a meeting (if he hasn’t already).

If that doesn’t work, I would try talking to Doreen Hodkin, the CS associate dean of administrative and student affairs. She’s very approachable and my guess is that if it ever went through the college, it went through her. If no one is still trying to do it, she would also be the one to talk to for getting the team started and college sponsored.

How are the Public health undergrad programs at NU?
healthcare administration, management etc?
is it a good program?

Thanks @nanotechnology & @PengsPhils. Not too hopeful about the FB pages but did suggest that he speak to Doreen.

@jihyun89
They have a good reputation. There are some interesting researchers (who you can see through the health sciences websites usually) and the assistant director of the pre-med organization is an MD/MBA

I’m a current Freshman at Providence College and I’m looking to transfer to Northeastern next fall. Does anyone have any tips for applying, or what transfers do in terms of orientation, housing, etc.

@newenglander367 I transferred here, and here was my experience and my advice:

Before you apply, keep your GPA up. They like above a 3.7; you’ll have to submit your SATs. Make sure you have concrete reasons for wanting to come to Northeastern; I wrote my essay about the co-op program and how I loved the opportunities that waited in the city, as well as the strong focus on being a global citizen. However, if those aren’t things that matter to you, don’t lie-be genuine in your essay.

Orientation for transfers is one day, typically near the end of July. Housing is not guaranteed, but most people did get it this year. Transfers typically get placed in leased properties that are not far from the campus; they’re apartment style and pretty nice.

There is a transfer student organization who does a lot with transfer students. There’s also about a hundred different organizations you can join-if the Catholic aspect of PC is important to you, there’s a very active Catholic Center that meets a couple times a week on campus.

Transfers are typically put on a modified co-op plan (two instead of three). If you cut one, you can typically graduate in four years.

I love it here and have had an awesome experience so far as a transfer, so if you have any questions, feel free to message me!

What are the main differences between NU and BU?

Can anyone tell me about the Psychology program at NEU and any co-op experiences (in Boston or elsewhere) that they have had within the program/major. Any info would be appreciated D is very interested in NEU and psych co-op opportunities.

@gormar099

Obviously, NEU is much more career focused, with co-op being the primary difference.

Greek life is significantly bigger at BU.

BU’s campus is much more urbanly integrated while NEU has a central campus that is still in a city with easy access to the same areas as BU.

Programs vary at each school, some being better than the counterpart at each. Some are also about equal. So major is important when comparing.

The NEU admit rate is lower / stats higher. Not by an absurd amount, but enough to note for applications and chances.

There’s a lot more, but those are some things that stand out to many up front.

Are certain schools inside Northeastern more selective than others? If so, which ones?

I don’t think the school releases statistics on each college, but there is some debate to if some colleges are in fact more selective. If some colleges were to be more selective, the Business, Engineering, Computer Science, and Pharm/PT would be the ones scoring above average by all likelihood.

@PengsPhils @nanotechnology Doreen Hodgkin forwarded an email today from Matthew Dippel and Alp Elci about a NEU ICPC programming competition on Saturday that my son will be registering for. It seems as if Matthew and Alp are the two that are the two in charge of this and are having this competition to identify interested students.

@apccpa

Great! I was actually considering attending that competition depending on my schedule, and I talked to Matthew just yesterday (he’s the TA for my Algorithms class). Glad to hear some gears are in motion!

Is the $30,000 NMF scholarship a one time thing or does it repeat each year? What is the student culture like at NU? Thanks!

The NMF scholarship is renewable for a total of 8 semesters. It requires that you maintain a 3.0 GPA and do 60 hours of community service work each year.
