Given that EA results just came out and the dust is starting to settle, I figure I’d make this thread for anyone to ask any questions about Northeastern! We have a few students on here as well as parents of current students, and I hope everyone who has time can join in and offer their experiences!
If you have any general questions about life/academics/co-op/honors/housing/Boston feel free to ask away!
MODERATOR’S NOTE: Anyone is free to ask or answer questions in the thread, although it is not the place to inquire about chances.
I received a Dean´s Scholarship but my decision letter didn´t mention anything about the Honors Program. What is the Honors Program like?
Also, NEU offers quite a few interdisciplinary majors in the College of Information Science. Do you know if these majors offer less depth than a normal double major? Thanks =)
hi, i got in witha 1.68 gpa and a 980 sat. as this school is a lower tier college, like its on the same level as colleges like University of Kentucky (maybe a bit lower), what should I expect at northeastern?
The honors program is not something to lose any sleep over. It’s nice housing perks your first two years, slightly smaller intro courses for some 1000-2000 level courses, and some extra requirements for honors seminars.
Yeah, lots of combined programs in CCIS, we’re proud of that
Combined majors usually only cut a few upper-level courses from each subject, though it varies and some cut none at all. You can compare the specific individual degrees to the combined to see exactly case by case. Whether that depth is needed is dependent on what you plan to do with the degree. I’d point out that any missing depth you still want in a combined major you can always fulfill with general electives to taste, which is generally my recommendation.
Move in is usually around labor day. Honors students usually move in a few days earlier to participate in some team building activities. You will get a very specific move in window (like a 4 hours window)- which will be emailed to you in late summer (does make it hard to plan travel in advance).
There is a welcome week (which is actually closer to 2 weeks) at the beginning of the semester (starts a few days before classes but continues for the first week of classes). Fun activities - like BBQs, city tours, food events, etc. The key one is the activities fair where you can see all the different clubs and can be put on their interest list. Many of the welcome week activities are also sponsored by the various clubs as a way to get interested students.
Typically about 5 days before or so. There’s a whole collection of welcome week activities, the stuff you would expect. Ice cream socials, frisbee, etc.
There’s also a mandatory orientation over the summer. You can do a session right before welcome week if you can’t make two trips. Orientation is pretty helpful and is also where you meet with your advisor and set your Fall classes.
@bethanylm291 while admissions and housing say there is no advantage to getting a housing deposit in early, some parents swear by the idea that the earlier you get your housing deposit in, the better housing you get as a frosh. I’m not sure of this at all however. Also, some summer orientations might fill up sooner.
I don’t think housing depends upon the deposit date (especially since they try to accommodate everybody’s LLC requests. Orientations can fill up, but they do have plenty of them over the summer.
When my daughter got in (back in 2012), despite getting in EA we deposited right at the deadline (she wanted to attend some admitted student events for her RD acceptances to help her make up her mind). She said she would accept a single (back when honors was in IV) and she got one. She also got the orientation session that worked best for us (her HS ended later in June so she needed a later rather than earlier one to attend).
Are there any issues with courses being filled if you have a late orientation? I don’t know if they go this late, but we will be near Boston in late July. It would be nice if we could combine trips.
The earlier orientations mean picking elective classes first, but most majors are already preregistered for the courses they need for their major. Some electives may fill, but you’ll have options and no trouble not getting into a class you need. There’s not too much variance in first semester schedules between the same major. I picked one course, but I did go to an earlier orientation and switch professors based on online reviews, a spot that would not have been available later. Turns out both are two of my favorite professors now, but hindsight is 20/20.
In terms of housing, I would not be worried there at all. LLC’s will drive that much more, and besides honors housing, nearly all housing is the same: standard doubles located all within the same small area. The only exception I know of was the over-enrollment last year (as many Boston schools experienced), where the school had to lease extra housing. I don’t think that will be happening this year, and the deferral wave for EA matches up with that.
While it has its advantages to be earlier, it’s not the end of the world. Timing a trip in July with it sounds like a great idea, and still should be ahead of some sections. There are orientations in June, July, and August, pretty evenly spread every 2-3 weeks.
@PengsPhils Northastern university is the worst school in boston, quite possibly the worst in the nation, i got in witha 1.66 gpa and 980 sat though, which just show there is not selectivity and everyone basically gets in right?
@PengsPhils Were you able to see what your first semester schedule was before you went to orientation? Where do you find reviews on professors and classes?
You can find your classes on the student portal, under my schedule, to see what you’re pre-registered for. Not sure when that will exactly happen, so give it some time. Fall courses aren’t even out yet technically. You can also look at course offerings and what has space online before as well.
We have an internal review system called TRACE, so most use that. Ratemyprofessors usually has very little data as a result. I used Ratemyprofessors first semester since I didn’t know about TRACE.
@PengsPhils I’m glad to hear about TRACE. When you mentioned professor ratings I googled Northeastern Professor ratings and ended up on ratemyprofessor. I chose Computer Science and there were quite a few negative ratings. I hope things are better on TRACE.
