Ask questions about Phillips Exeter Academy

Is there a link for the new dress code? I found this on the Exonian site:

http://theexonian.com/2015/05/14/gender-neutral-dress-code-a-first-for-pea/

I can’t tell if boys still need to wear ties or blazers. Based on this, I don’t think that they need to.

Blazers were not previously required but ties were. New code is ties optional (although word on the street is that most boys still plan to wear them, including mine, which surprised me!)

Here it is in its entirety:
The following dress code is required in classes, assemblies, when representing Phillips Exeter Academy at other schools and colleges, and on occasions when dress code attire is specified. Because fashions change rapidly, members of the community should keep in mind that the purpose of the dress code is to reflect the discipline and the seriousness of purpose we associate with academic pursuits and other occasions requiring dress code attire. This principle governs any question about an item of dress deemed inappropriate, but not specifically listed in the code.
Phillips Exeter Academy asks that its students remain in neat and clean attire during all required appointments.

This attire is defined as follows:
Dress Shirt (defined as blouse or button-down)
Sweater
Turtleneck
Dress
Ethnic attire

Encouraged attire includes:
Ties
Blazer/Jacket
Scarves

Unacceptable attire includes:
T-shirts, including long-sleeved
All athletic wear, such as (but not limited to):
Mesh shorts
Leggings and/or tights worn as pants
Hooded sweatshirts
Sweatpants
Team jerseys
Strapless tops and tops with straps less than two inches wide
Polo shirts
Flannel shirts
Hats indoors
Revealing apparel (e.g., exposed midriffs, buttocks, and/or chest)

General Guidelines:
All hemlines must be at least fingertip length.
All clothing must be clean and in good repair (not torn, frayed or cut off).
Shirts with tails must be tucked in.

Sorry, correction:

I was just informed that polos were taken off the “unacceptable” attire list before this was approved. FWIW.

Any specific notation on jeans?

“Encouraged attire”? This seems a little odd.

Jeans were allowed in previous code as well. Still allowed. No tears, etc. though.

Students wrote the proposal for the new code, and it was approved by faculty. Faculty voted to make the change regarding polos.

I don’t know the reasoning behind the “encouraged” language, but I do know that most students (from what I am hearing right now) intend to follow those rules as if they were part of the code. There was surprising opposition among the students to relaxing the code.

A big part of this change was to make the dress code gender-neutral, so that everyone is on equal footing. A lot of people still care about maintaining some formality in the dress code, however, which is the reason I think for the “encouraged” section.

What are the singles only dorms?

No dorms are purely singles-only (incoming preps often get doubles). But the ones that are close are Cilley, Wentworth, Ewald, Main Street.

Do new lowers usually get a single or double?

I just saw HarryLegs post on FB about this thread. Hopefully we get some new questions from new students on here.
Also, I saw an article saying that this year over-enrolled so some singles will have to be made into emergency doubles.

Nope, sorry. I’ve never done a theatre production.

does anyone know when we get our dorm assignments?

@coconut5 last year they were announced mid august

Participating in a mainstage production (either as a performer OR as part of the technical/stage crew) fulfills a student’s PE requirement for the term. There are also opportunities to do theater as an extracurricular.

Laptop/tablet stipend is generous. Covers the cost of a mid-range purchase. My kid used bday money combined with stipend to upgrade to higher end models for both.

FA covers travel programs at the same percentage as your school year award. IOW, if you get 40% FA, and a summer trip costs $5000, you pay $3000. That said, some trips are fully covered (for both FA and full pay students), because of benefactors.

Can anyone tell me what is involved in “Family Weekend” - I need to make plans for travel and am unsure when I should be there. The schedule says “Oct 16 Classes - Family Weekend Begins, Oct 17 (Saturday) Classes - amily Weekend” Oct 19 (Monday) is off.

When should we arrive on campus - Oct 15 so that we are there in the early morning on Oct 16? or Oct 16 in the afternoon, after classes are over. What is the purpose of having Saturday classes during family weekend? Should I arrive Saturday?

@heartburner my mom had said that they told her it was sort of like Open House that other schools have. If your school doesn’t do that, it’s where students bring their family to the school and show them around the school to talk to teachers and other things. I have no idea when it starts though.

Thanks @Exeter1 – I’ll just block out the Friday and plan on being there that afternoon.

@heartburner
The arrival times of parents are very spread out over the weekend. It doesn’t really matter when you arrive, but the Academy holds Saturday classes that week to give parents the chance to witness class in session-- class carries on normally, but parents generally sit there for the 50-minute block to see what it’s like.
