We were taught in the language of the host country except for in English and Math, which were taught in English. PMing you which country.
Do kids ride bikes or razor scooters or walk into town and around campus?
People do all of the above. Definitely people go into town all the time-- it’s right there!
Hi! I just got accepted into Exeter, as a 9th grade repeat. So, this is a small question I suppose. I am from Florida, where we usually start school early-mid August. My cousin went to St. Paul’s, and told me that 9th graders usually start a few days before everyone else. I know that they are different boarding schools with different processes, but could you tell me when school starts/is it the 9th graders first? Thanks!
Yeah, I think there a few days of what they call orientation so that we can get our dorms situated and all that jazz.
Boarders come in Sept 9th.
Is there any kind of fraternity-like hazing in any particular dorms?
@GryffinHunter, there is a great resource called the E-Book that answers many of these questions. Look for it on the exeter.edu site. Not to dampen your questions- I think they are helping others. But if you are impatient, a lot is spelled out there. And Junior is a correct term (Junior, Middles (lower and upper), and Senior), though people say Prep, Lower, Upper, and Senior. Don’t let the others intimidate you.
Since there was a bedbug issue, you will not want to bring upholstered furniture (i.e. your white furniture should not be upholstered).
@heartburner- Especially if your son is in Abbot or Soule, he may appreciate having a bike to get over to football in a reasonable time. From what I have heard, I think your son will have to initiate the Hazing, there is a dearth of it on campus.
Found the “E-book”
@heartburner There was some hazing in one boys’ dorm a few years back–you could find references to it in past issues of the Exonian. It was squashed pretty thoroughly once the dorm faculty and administrators figured out what was going on, though it took a while to change the culture of the dorm. It’s impossible to completely prevent the teenage pre-frontal cortex from behaving stupidly, but the school is on it and has no tolerance for hazing.
I’ll add to Vegas 1’s answers as mine vary a bit (also a parent BTW)
Are laptops used in class?
The use of ipads is increasing, so this may be changing, but I gathered that laptops were mostly not used as they interfered with discussion. I certainly never saw them when I visited classrooms.
Realistically, first semester as a prep, how many hours of home work did you have to complete?
Does everyone do the homework?
(Some kids at my school NEVER do the homework and that ticks me off.)
This changed for my kid but he always had a lot of homework. Prep year, maybe 3 hours on weekdays, with longer projects and reading on week-ends. A lot of that was learning what he really had to do and (by upper/senior year) choosing classes that weren't quite so time intensive for him--and learning to be a fast writer. Toward the end, I think he learned how much daily work he really had to do to participate in class--sometimes it was pretty minimal. But people who never do homework would not do well at Exeter since the classes are essentially run by students.
How often does the average person leave campus?
How far do they go?
For someone not participating in sports and doing theatre instead, would both Saturday and Sunday be free?
My son went into town all the time, especially on week-ends. He'd also go into town to eat dinner once a week or so with friends after practice. One of the things that attracted him most to Exeter was the way the town and the school are intertwined. Don't know about theater. Sundays were almost always free for athletes.
How often do you call your mom?
A few times a day at first to once or twice a week by senior year. It varies. Do what feels comfortable, but don't forget to call at least once a week!
What color is most common in furnishings?
Realistically, if I bring white furnishings, how long will it take me to stain it?
My son lost his couch in the Great Bedbug Scourge of 2013. I wouldn't bring much. And there were some nasty stains on his rugs! I hate to admit it as I'm a pretty green person normally, but we ended up buying a lot of disposable Walmart furniture that he chucked or gave away at the end of each year.
Is there a fire code rule to what percentage of my wall I can fill up with posters?
Fire code pertains mostly to hanging drapey stuff and having heating elements in the room.
In the first few weeks of being a prep, did everyone ask each other if they were FA or FP?
Nope. Not at all.
Is there an ice cream machine?
Does it have vanilla?
The vanilla-serving ice cream machine is the principle reason my 9yo wants to go to Exeter. I don’t think it operates every day though.
Does freshman 15 hold true to boarding school?
Not a lot of fried food, but most dorms have kids running study snack operations, which meant in my kid’s dorm, ready access to pizza. So don’t know–my kid was heavy into sports that required a high calorie intake, so it was more a matter of getting him enough calories.
How often am I given the option to eat pancakes?
Does anyone go on dates?
Yes. But at boarding school there is the inevitable awkwardness of not really being able to escape encountering that bad date who lives right around the corner from you.
Ice cream machine runs almost every single day during the spring. Three choices: Vanilla, Chocolate, or a mix of both. Two types of cones available.
For me, that’d be the #1 reason to come to Exeter.
^ How about the machine that grinds the fresh peanuts and dispenses freshly-made peanut butter before your eyes? Or the Cappuccino machines (when they were working)?
Hopefully that’s tongue-in-cheek, because my parents would have just bought an ice cream machine and saved themselves a lot of money.
Yes. I am thinking that the ice cream machine ranks low on reasons to attend Exeter in parent’s minds.
I don’t know…the ice cream machine is right up there with the big swimming pool and the frozen yogurt mix-in shop in my 4th grader’s reasons. Don’t underestimate the value of the small pleasures in the life of an Exeter student. Like Jazz Brunch. Sure it’s only once a year, but it’s a right up there in the Top Ten Reasons to Go to Exeter in our house.
Where can I find the proposed dress code changes? I looked on the exeter and the exonian sites, but can’t find the official proposed changes.
Here is the official statement from stuco

Thanks so much for doing this for us!
I have one kinda silly question
Is there an a cappella group? I’m kinda into that kind of stuff lol
@Jec7777 I love to sing. I would like to know this as well.
