Ask questions about Phillips Exeter Academy

@Bunny8280 If you haven’t already you’ll want to give a solid read to the ebook. Traveling off campus, within the 10 mile limit, and getting into motor vehicles are covered. See page 26 regarding traveling by car. The ebook says it is not okay to “rent” cars which I think would cover uber and taxis. Most students use bicycles to get around the general area.

Thank you for the response, but I still think the wording of it is vague. I have heard stories of people using these services to meet up with colleges or whatnot. i still feel using Uber is different from renting cars, because you are not liable if the car is damaged.

@Bunny8280 That’s just my interpretation of the ebook. You should certainly clarify with the appropriate faculty member on campus. Uber/taxi services involve underage students getting into cars with adults not associated with the Academy and that has all sorts of legal and safety implications that I’m sure they’d prefer to avoid.

My interpretation is that “rent” means Avis/Hertz, etc. However, as the use of ride hailing apps continues to soar, I suspect many schools are relooking at their rules, so definitely ask Exeter for clarification. Note however, that the rules for Uber and Lyft, which may or not be enforced in a particular area, state:

https://www.uber.com/legal/terms/us/

https://help.lyft.com/hc/en-us/articles/214583147-Policies-for-passenger-use-of-Lyft#children

Right, but many people, including myself have used Lyft many times without much trouble. The trouble comes when you start acting like an arrogant brat, which will anger the driver, but since you are under 18, they can’t kick you out. So, if you act like a decent human being, the drivers don’t care. I’ll try to talk to a faculty member for clarification, but like I said, I have heard students use these services.

@Bunny8280 splitting hairs over rules either those of the school or those of uber or lyft is a dangerous path. The school doesnt tolerate much and other students will report you. good luck.

Jesus. There are still snithches? So Exeter has snitches and an intolerance to conservative minded people… great

@Bunny8280 I am a current Exeter student and I can tell you almost definitely that you are allowed to use uber etc. Some of my friends occasionally use it to get to places like Macdonalds, the beach, etc. So yes, you should be allowed to uber to get to the Cinema but since it is slightly far away, definitely make sure with faculty.

@Bunny8280: The issue isn’t about snitches or intolerance. It’s about your apparent disregard for rules you find inconvenient. None of the boarding schools have much tolerance for rule-breakers as a little searching here will prove. Good luck among your classmates at Exeter whose lines may be different from yours.

Do I tell my dorm advisor that I’m using Uber, or should I simply tell me I’m heading out of campus?

As a parent, I understand your viewpoint, but to most teens(as far as I know), they do not like people who play “tattle tale” on such petty things. If someone were to use alcohol, drugs, etc, then telling an adult is the right thing to do. But, I do not see how using a taxi service is harming anyone

@Bunny8280 Checking with some students and looking at the ebook again as long as you inform a faculty member ahead of time using a taxi service is probably an okay thing to do. That said Uber/Lyft et al have had some issues that would likely present safety/legal questions for the Academy and as @Center pointed out Uber/Lyft themselves ban minors from using their services. There are tons of bikes on campus and each dorm has an indoor storage room for bikes in the basement.

Questions for athletes-
-Do you keep a set of shower stuff for showering at the athletic facility like a small caddy?
-Does the equipment manager wash workout clothes? I know someone who was a coach at PA and the kids were given a big pin to hang their towels/workouts clothes/uniforms on and they would be washed each day and ready to go for the next or are they responsible for washing all their gear?

I understand that biking is the optimal form of transportation, but he cinema is like 20-35 minutes away from PEA, but a car ride is only like 7-10 minutes

@Bunny8280 Are you talking about the movie theater in Epping? If you are, then it is not 20-35 minutes by bike - more like 50 minutes. You also wrote previously that you can walk 8 miles in 35 minutes? It’s more like 2 1/2 - 3 hours.

Also, that particular theater falls outside of the “Exeter Vicinity” as described in the E-Book - “defined as the region in New Hampshire bounded by Route 125, Route 16 and the ocean” (Page 24). The theater in Epping is outside (barely) of that region. As a result, you technically will need to go through the out-of-town process…which would be ridiculous to just go watch a movie. If you decide to go and get caught, you will be breaking the rules. If it’s ever even slightly questionable, you should always confirm with dorm faculty to make sure it’s ok.

I don’t know if things have changed since my time there, but I would have to say that PEA is anything but a school of snitches. But the parents on this thread are correct in telling you that Exeter does not mess around with their rules. I knew several students that were suspended and/or expelled because of offenses that ranged from drugs/alcohol to plagiarism to sneaking out of dorms - all were caught because they were exceedingly stupid and arrogant.

But IMHO, you should focus on the amazing experience that awaits you and not on what you will not be able to do. Best of luck to you.

Oh my. I wasn’t paying attention when I wrote that. Since the cinema isn’t an option, what other attractions are there?

@Bunny8280 I have deep skepticism that you are actually an incoming student OR that your brother attended PEA. Somehow it seems implausible that someone with your questions could be either. Just my gut…

@momof3swimmers in our experience:

Questions for athletes-
-Do you keep a set of shower stuff for showering at the athletic facility like a small caddy?
Our kids just have small toiletries bags in their gym bags and transport them back and forth.

-Does the equipment manager wash workout clothes? I know someone who was a coach at PA and the kids were given a big pin to hang their towels/workouts clothes/uniforms on and they would be washed each day and ready to go for the next or are they responsible for washing all their gear?
All workout clothes and towels were our kids responsibility. Team gear was turned in after every game, washed and checked out for the next game.

While I did not attend Exeter, I don’t think this question is school specific.

Yes, I kept a second set of toiletries for the gym. Some kids do; others don’t.

this information is very valuable, thanks @divdad
