Ask questions about Phillips Exeter Academy

Hey guys,

I have a few questions about Phillips Exeter.
Are there Saturday classes?
Are the rooms nice?
Is there much/any time for recreation on weekends?
Are sports required?

Thanks!

I have heard Peabody is pretty nice from a current upper and senior. Don’t know about the other ones.

@GryffinHunter‌

It is possible to take 6 classes, but the 6th would have to audited (taken without credit). Rarely anyone does that, though.

@hockeygod33

Are there Saturday classes?
Yup. Sadly. They are much less frequent than a few years ago, however, and they follow a Wednesday schedule-- meaning there are a maximum of 4 classes.
Are the rooms nice?
Yup! Depends on the dorm how big the rooms are, but each dorm has its own special “touch”.
Is there much/any time for recreation on weekends?
Definitely. It might be stressful on Saturdays for varsity athletes with away games, but Sundays are usually free to leisure.
Are sports required?
For prep and lower year, yes. However, those interested in theater or music can opt for music sports or drama sports, where there is less physical activity involved.

For dorms, about one fourth of the incoming students (usually freshmen) are new.

Webster, Abbot, Peabody, Soule
The last three are all on North Side, so closer to the academic buildings. Webster is by far, closer to the gym.

There are jokes about how small Peabody is, but the upside is that all the rooms are singles. Soule has mostly all doubles, but the rooms are huge and the ones on the top floor have lots of sunlight. Abbot is very cosy and has arguably the best placement of the three. Mostly doubles, I believe.

Webster is the biggest boys dorm on campus (70-80 guys?). It was renovated last summer, so it’s pretty up-to-date as well. I believe it’s a good mix of singles and doubles.

Webster is or at least was before reno. divided into north and south, each with its own dorm faculty and entrance though they shared bathrooms and the common area. That quad is a great location, right across from the library and equally close to the gym and classroom buildings

Will Webster have a lot of athletes? (I’m not one and don’t want to be a fish out of water so to speak.)

No, definitely don’t worry about that. The stereotypical athletic dorms are Cilley and Wentworth. However, they don’t group dorms by personality. It’s random. There’s all kinds of people in every dorm, but there are stereotypes. Webster is really nice right now because of the renovation. Like, really nice. Only new students have roommates in Webster. In Peabody, there actually are doubles (only a few), but they’re emergency doubles and super tiny.

@theidoit‌ Thanks!

Okay I think I am hoping for Webster or Peabody.

Is there Odyssey Of The Mind in Exeter? If there is, do they usually go world finals?

@GryffinHunter
Don’t disregard Ewald or Main Street though! They’re arguably more close-knit than other guys’ dorms, with more unique building architecture. A downside, however, is the distance to the gym (~10 minute walk).

@Davis2298
I don’t think we have Odyssey of the Mind-- I haven’t heard of it on campus. If we do, it’s certainly a small program.

Is there a large community that comes to football games? Coming from the South I have heard that football is not nearly as big as Lacrossee or Hockey.

…but Ewald and Main are close to the boathouse.

Football is actually the biggest sport in the fall-- a ton of people go to E/a in the fall just to watch football. In my opinion, lax hockey and football are pretty even overall

But Ewald and Main are also close to Stillwells, an ice cream place :slight_smile: and the boathouse is wonderful

Is there any recreational kayaking/canoeing/paddle boarding on the lake?

I just couldn’t get over Ewald and Main Streets Funky Architecture. Are they mainly singles?

Exeter does not yet have a lake. There is talk of removing the “mill dam” on the Exeter/Squamscott river, which would cause a radical change to the flow (I would guess). There are no recreational paddleboat, etc. Sorry!

Ah, so I mistook a river for a lake.

Hi, I’ll be a new student in the fall and I have some questions:

  1. What is it like coming in as a new lower/upper?
  2. What are the best girl's dorms? (in terms of location, people, overall atmosphere) Should I request a dorm?
  3. For a new student, (NOT a prep) is it better to have a double or a single?
  4. How competitive is it to get on to a V/JV team? What are the most competitive sports?
  5. Is there any orientation period for new students?

Thank You!!

Lots of questions that no one has answered. I think this needs a little bump?
Does Wetherall have better food?
