Ask Questions about SCU Here!

Hi @effuueffeff,

The official website is correct, so the financial aid office strongly encourages transfer students to submit their FAFSA and CSS Profile. Here are some other websites we recommend for scholarships:

Hi @1bostonterrier,

When I first started this thread almost three years ago I was an undeclared first-year. Fast forward to today and Iā€™m a Junior double Biology and Neuroscience major. Crazy how time flies!

As for disability resources, I donā€™t have personal experience with their department, but from what Iā€™ve heard theyā€™re really great about working with professors and the residence halls to be as accommodating as possible. Every professor Iā€™ve had has announced at the start of each quarter that if a student need accommodations, they are happy to work with them to try to meet their needs, as long as the student has approval from the disability resources office.

Hope this helps!

Hi @ngangela,

Based on the information provided for this academic year:

If a student is enrolled in 12 units or more, their tuition cost per quarter comes to $15,704. The amount of units each student takes varies, so the cost per unit will vary as well. From personal experience, most of the people I know take between 14 and 20 units each quarter.

If a student is enrolled in less than 12 units, the tuition per unit comes to $1,309.

As for summer classes, each unit costs $654.

Hereā€™s the URL to page where I got this information:

@vschuSCU Thanks Veronica! Also, I recently got accepted in SCU for FALL 2017 term and I was wondering if I could take summer classes at SCU before the Fall term? Would I have to ask someone for permission or that is not allowed because I am admitted in the Fall.

@ngangela,

Unless you are part of the Young Scholars Program, you wouldnā€™t be able to take classes until you are officially a student in the fall. If youā€™re interested, hereā€™s a link to that program:

I am wondering about the financial aid package my child was offered and if anyone with past experience would be able to help out with past experiences I would be grateful. My child was offered a great package with a Deans scholarship and grants is there any possibility of him not receiving the same aid each of his 4 years at Santa Clara. I believe that the term used is ā€œrenewable for 4 yearsā€. I understand the he needs to keep his grade point average at a 3.0 or above, but the term ā€œrenewableā€ has me a little concerned. Just trying to get as much information as possible as we may have a few options for schools. But we favor Santa Clara, however this is the most expensive college we are looking at.

Hi @vschuSCU I applied to Santa Clara RD and I follow majority of the major Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat accounts for SCU . I participate in almost all of the Q and A sessions. I have also emailed my admissions counselor multiple times with questions and everything. I was wondering if I should write a letter of interest to really convey my interest in SCU, but i was wondering if I would come off as desperate?

I have visited before during the summer but since Iā€™m from Texas, Iā€™m not able to visit often. Thank you!

@vschuSCU Hey, I applied for Computer Science and Engineering at SCU. I was wondering how competitive the engineering program is? Also, is this more of a liberal arts school? A few of my friends said itā€™s better to go to SCU if you want to major in that area? Sorry, I have quite a few questions. Also, how much aid do they usually give out?

I live 15 minutes away and SCU is one of my top choices. So far, Iā€™ve only heard back from SJSU and Iā€™ve been accepted to SE. Here are my stats:

GPA (UW): 3.361
Rank: Top 30%
SAT (New): 1190 (620 Math, 570 English)
SAT Subject Tests: 520 Chemistry, 560 Math
Honors: Undefeated LD Debater, Most Dedicated in Robotics, 2nd Place Rotary Speech, Rookie of the Year/MVP in Tennis, Science Olympiads 3rd Place
Activities (~ 27-35 hrs/wk): Speech and Debate, Robotics, Apple Club, Interact, Tennis (Leadership position in a few of the clubs)
Community Service (~13-15 hrs/week): Sol (Visiting schools and tutoring), Hospital Volunteer, Hour of Code Volunteer, Reading Tutor
Essays: Received recognition for common app essay in my school.

Iā€™ve had a family member passed away and it was hard staying focused in school, but I improved each year throughout HS. Essay was actually based on this. Do you think my chances are good enough? I know SCU is quite competitive. Thanks for the help and input!

@ngangela Did they already start sending out acceptances? Did you apply early or regular? I thought they didnā€™t send out acceptances till late March?

Hi @concerneddad1968,

Congratulations to your son! As for the scholarship, Iā€™m currently on a scholarship that is also renewable each year, and as long as your son is able to keep up his minimum GPA, I donā€™t think you have anything to worry about! If he knows that it might be difficult to keep it up, it might be helpful to make a plan going into his first year as to how he can make that a priority. I also have a few friends that have similar scholarships, and they havenā€™t had any issues renewing their financial aid packages each year. It might also be helpful to give the financial aid office a call just to clarify any other questions you might have, hereā€™s their phone number: 1-408-551-1000.

Good luck with the decision process!

Hi @salty.sath.2017,

Thereā€™s no harm in writing a letter to your counselor, but it will most likely not sway a decision one way or the other! Have no fear of coming off as desperate!

@vschuSCU Another question. How hard is it to maintain a good GPA in the college of engineering? Whatā€™s considered a good GPA in that college? Also, would appreciate your insight on my previous questions above. Thanks!

Hi @tahaquraishi,

Thanks for your questions!

Our engineering program is our most competitive program on campus. Only 15% of the student population is in the engineering school. Since Iā€™m just a student, itā€™s hard for me to say what your chances are since I donā€™t actually read any of the applications. To give you an idea of what the current population is like, hereā€™s what the middle 50% of scores looked like for the Class of 2020 in the school of engineering:

Unweighted GPA: 3.65-3.94
SAT CR: 600-710
SAT Math: 680-760
ACT: 30-33

Based on personal experience, I would say that SCU often has the feel of a liberal arts school, just because there is so much focus on receiving a well rounded education, while also giving students the information necessary to prepare them for whatā€™s after college. No matter what youā€™re interested in studying, SCU definitely has the ability to prepare you for what youā€™re interested in, and thereā€™s opportunities for all sorts of majors.

Financial aid varies from student to student, depending on family situations and scholarships that are given out, however 73% of our students receive some sort of financial aid.

As for your recent questions about the school of engineering specifically, to be honest Iā€™m not sure. From my own experience in the school of arts & sciences, maintaining a GPA that Iā€™m happy with definitely takes a lot of work, but itā€™s not impossible. It also depends on your level of involvement within the community with other sports/activities/jobs.

Hope this helps!

When is SCU sending out admission decisions?

@CoolSpark did you get the recent e-mail saying ā€œsoonā€? Doesnā€™t help much, does it?

Hi @CoolSpark & @lkg4answers,

Admission decisions should be sent out before the end of March. The counselors give a flexible time range for the release of decisions in case adjustments need to be made. The decisions are sent out on a rolling basis, so as the counselors hear back from students, they will send out more decisions.

@vschuSCU Hi! Iā€™m confused as to what you meant by when ā€œcounselors hear back from students.ā€ Also, I thought that decisions will come out April 1.

@salty.sath.2017,

Thatā€™s in reference to students that are on the waitlist. Say a student who was accepted eventually decides that they donā€™t want to attend SCU. Once the counselors are notified of this information they have the ability to admit a student who was on the waitlist.

I realize my phrasing was confusing, sorry about that!

My D was Waitlisted. What are her chances of getting accepted?

Hello @vschuSCU I recently got admitted into the CAS for Psychology. I was wondering if you happen to know anything about SCUā€™s psychology program? Good things/bad things etc. I am planning to come and visit the school during student preview day. Thanks!
