@GoBears2023 Thanks for the advice. I have also applied for a chemistry internship at Wesleyan for the summer.
how could you get an internship as high schooler? Are they paid or unpaid?
Usually cold emailing professors works pretty well. Just make sure to attach your resume and work experience. I did internships that were unpaid mostly because paid internships are usually reserved for undergrads and graduate students. Also, most professors have a set amount of money they can spend on their research and they will most likely not want to pay a high school intern.
@birdbear Sounds good! I would consider both options carefully before accepting anything. Please note that whatever you end up choosing will effect your plans for subsequent summers as well.
Thank you for providing so many advices! Are there any tips for recommendation letters for applying summer programs? Everyone told me that recs are pretty important…
@Idontknowneither hi, i’m no expert but in all my applications so far i’be asked a teacher who i’ve had for two semesters now. they’re also my english teacher, and i’ve worked with them on application essays etc. so they have a good idea of my interests/strengths. i’d say it goes pretty similarly to any college application!
@Idontknowneither Recs are definitely important because it will give AOs the opportunity to see how teachers view you as a student, hopefully both inside and outside of class. For example, I asked my CS teacher whom I have grown very close with and he is the advisor for 2 of my clubs. Also, who you get your recs from depends on the program as well.
@kanagawa good
Thank you for the advice:)!
@Idontknowneither No Problem!
@gobears2023 do you have any advice of getting an internship with professors at hospital/university? should i just email them listing my interests?
@GoBears2023 also is it possible to self study for USABO, USACO, scioly, etc. ?
For internships, I usually just cold email every single person that I am interested in doing research with and send my resume. Keep in mind that I do get very little responses, but that is because I have some sort of award that proves that I am competent in the STEM field. Without any substantial awards, the chances of getting an internship become slimmer.
As for your second question, it is possible to study for those tests. That’s exactly what I did. However, I was able to pick up concepts easily because I was taking courses that aligned with the material on those tests.
Did anyone here apply for Stanford AI4ALL. My daughter submitted her application yesterday (yes at the very last minute, as she somehow remembered the deadline to be Feb 15) at 11:50 PM, but the system still showed application submitted on Feb 14. We are in CA too and were hoping for Standford to be in PST. She was a little nervous that she might have been too late (The system did let her submit though).
I did not end up applying but I had a friend who went last year if that helps. I can ask her any questions that you have and write her response @pmgzb
In terms of an overall college application, how important do you think college summer programs and internships are? I spend my summers practicing and playing in tennis tournaments along with developing a math YouTube channel. This summer I also plan on volunteering extensively to help underprivileged students improve their math skills. I don’t know if I will pay consequences on decision day for not attending college summer programs and lining up internships. I am from southeastern Wisconsin and many programs are far from home on the Atlantic or Pacific seaboard. This is problematic due to my parents fear of letting my stay for weeks away from home. I am interested in attending a very competitive university, like UChicago, and I have the statistics and extracurriculars to put myself in the running.
I think it depends on the summer program and internship. There are a select number of STEM and Humanities camps that I think are worth going for. However, as for internships, it really depends on the type of research / work you are doing and whether you can get a good rec from it.
As for your case, I think your summers are well spent.Tennis tournaments will show colleges that you are highly proficient in a sport given that you are fairly good. The math YouTube channel is quite unique but it comes down to the quality of the content you post.
Your summers are important but it doesn’t mean you need an internship or summer program. As long as you show that you are pursuing your interests and doing something productive, you should be fine!
has anyone heard back from stanford AI4all?
Maybe ask on a different forum. No one really checks this one.
@Torontobase @pmgzb There’s a thread for this now

@GoBears2023 Can you PM me? Don’t have enough posts, I would like to ask you some questions privately if that’s possible
The Stanford AI4All 2019 thread disappeared!
