Ask questions about summer programs here!

Hello,
I was accepted to both SSP (Summer Science Program) and the Beaverworks Institute in Embedded Security. Both programs are in areas I am interested in and are essentially free (from financial aid). I am having difficulty deciding which program I want to attend. Does anyone have any thoughts on these? For example, which is more prestigious, which is a more beneficial opportunity, etc.

@ParentfromGA

Never heard of it. Rule of thumb is the longer the summer program, the better it is. That being said, I looked into the program and it looks like a fantastic program and I think your child will learn a lot from it!

@HH3320
Take SSP. It’s almost a guaranteed acceptance to a T20 and you’ll learn a lot more.

@GoBears2023, My son is a high school sophomore. He got accepted into COSMOS 2019. Did attending COSMOS help you in any way? I mean, in either getting into better summer programs following year or in college applications.

@sophMom2021

COSMOS helped with future summer program applications. It definitely looks good on a resume and gives you a better chance at the UCs.

@GoBears2023, thank you

Hi, I’m a rising sophomore, and I don’t really know any extracurricular activities around my area at NJ. During the summer, I’m taking part in a STEM program at a local university, but I’m not sure what other programs there are in my area. Do you have any ideas for STEM-related programs at NJ because I’m not sure I could travel to far places. Thanks!

@CoolMasterM

STEM is a really, really big field. What are you primarily interested in? Bio? Chem? Physics?

I’d say more towards chemistry, and researching experiments for events like science fairs.

@CoolMasterM

There aren’t a lot in NJ actually. As a sophomore, that’s one of the weirder years since most chem camps are only offered junior summer. I would strongly recommend you taking an internship at a local university in their chem department to get some research experience in but also maybe get a paper published.

Thanks! For asking professors about research, would I email them regarding them of what projects they’re working on and see if I could help? Or would I ask them directly to publish a paper with them? I have a local university in mind because I’ve attended a summer program for them for a while, so I’m hoping it could work out. Thanks again!

Hey! I kind of have a similar question. I’m more interested in biology as a Stem path, and I wanted to know if there was anything I could do to enhance my path towards it? I’m in the Greater NYC areas, more closer to NJ, and my school doesn’t really offer much activities on it. Thanks!

@CoolMasterM

For asking professors, I would do some background research before asking what they do. Often times they will have their own website / page that will list what they are currently research! Never ask a professor to just publish a paper with them, because you will come off as rude. Often times, they will decide to put you as an author of a paper if you did significant work. Basically, in order to publish a paper under your name, just work hard in the lab and never ask to be an author. It will come based on the effort you put in.

@lollipop123

What grade are you in?

@CoolMasterM @LollipopLol123 Stevens in Hoboken has quite a few summer programs. Many are full at this point however.

@taverngirl

thanks for including that!

I’m a freshman right now.

@taverngirl , thank you! I’ll look into it.

@GoBears2023 , thanks! I’ll try my best to contact some professors. Would you recommend trying to contact them over the summer, or during the start of the school year as a sophomore if they might be busy? Thanks again!

@taverngirl , thanks! I checked some of their programs, and I’ll talk to my parents about it since they require tuition that is kind of high. I have done some of their math competitions though that were for free.

@CoolMasterM Contact them in the summer.

@GoBears2023 , I wanted to how to participate in the USABO, and others like the USACO and USAPhO. Are they competitions anyone can do over the summer, or do you sign up for them? Some of my friends have it at their schools, but my school doesn’t have it. Is there a way for me to sign up for it? Thanks!

@LollipopLol123

Ummmm, i dont think I know the answer to this one because my school hosted the USABO through the science department. I would suggest contacting neighboring schools that do host the USABO to see if you can take it there. In addition, some local tutoring sites may host the USABO as well. Sorry for not giving you a complete answer. Please let me know what you end up doing!
