Ask Questions about Syracuse Here

@benl54321 I don’t know anyone in falk college so I can’t tell you much about it, sorry!

also if anyone viewing this thread who goes/has gone to Syracuse and wants put in their input, feel free!

@byadg123 That’s wild! I love my friends but I couldn’t imagine showering with them lmao

@gcnorth My RA is in the program! From what I’ve seen from the program it seems very open-ended so you can pursue just about anything. I believe my RA is going the pre-law route (they mentioned studying for the LSAT). I would check out the VPA website to get an idea of what you would be doing.

@saintmurdock Zero privacy showers were the norm from JrHigh on up thru college. For guys anyway.

Hi there @saintmurdock - My son was accepted ED to VPA (Setnor) for Sound Recording. He was really involved in Marching Band in HS and is debating about continuing once he gets to SU. He is worried about the time commitment with adjusting to college, etc. Anything you can tell him about your experience with Marching Band?

@gingersnap97 Joining marching band was honestly one of the best decisions I made coming here. it made adjusting to college a lot easier for me, i made a group a friends that I’m really close with now before the first day of classes even started. it is a huge time commitment though, we have 3 two hour practices on non game weeks, and an additional practice on Friday and Saturday morning for weeks with a Saturday game, and to be honest games take up your entire Saturday (i never did any school work after games i was so exhausted that i just rested). it was rough adjusting to it for the first two weeks. but I learned how to balance my time between work and band. Also a ton of Setnor kids do band, so it’s certainly doable with that program. I say don’t worry about the time commitment, if he loves doing it he can certainly make time for it. What instrument does he play?

Thanks for the reply and insight @saintmurdock - He plays trumpet. This year he was a Drum Major and his band won 1st place at States, New England Regionals and Nationals for Class IV Open at US Bands. I hope he decides to give it a try. I think it will really be great for him.

@gingersnap97 - I’m going back decades but my solution, which may or may not be available now, was to join the wind ensemble in Fresh/Soph years and the Concert Band in Jr/Sr. High level music without the time required to learn the moves.

@gingersnap97 that’s so cool!! if he’s still worried about the time commitment he should check out sour sitrus society! It’s the pep band for basketball and other sporting events besides football, it is very low commitment with about 5 two hour rehearsals each semester. I honestly prefer marching band though I enjoy it a lot more.

@byadg123 that is an option! but since he’s a music major he’ll already have to take wind ensemble as part of his curriculum

In hindsight I wish that I hadn’t done wind ensemble. I was a pretty accomplished musician and should have taken the opportunity to play in new sandboxes. Maybe drama or debate or public speaking

So right now it is currently 51° about its about to rain. Go cuse

@saintmurdock My son is a junior . Can you tell me if you know kids with similar stats to yours that were accepted ? My son probably has similar ones to you. He would be applying to the college of arts and science . Syracuse is one of his top choices .
Have you heard good stories of students success after Syracuse ? Are they going to grad school , finding jobs ? Thanks for any info you can provide !

college of A&S has so many majors that any individual story couldn’t possibly be representative of the whole. It isn’t like asking about architecture or the accounting program at Whitman. FWIW I knew a Rhodes Scholar from A&S but he was quite a guy.

Good luck! I loved SU!

@Senior_1999 , my D applied this year. If you haven’t attended an info session at SU I would highly recommend it. You can also sign up for an info session with the College of Arts & Sciences afterwards. Both provide a lot of details and stats. We were impressed. Huge alumni connections all over the country.

@newyorkmom2girl . Thanks for info . He’s planning on going to visit over spring break . Excited to hear what he thinks . Thanks again !

As applicant for RD for Fall 2018 – anyone out there have a feel of general Merit award for 4.3 WGPA, 30 ACT out of state, top 50 national high school (not sure if latter matters)…just trying to see if I’ll be on higher/lower range, and ballpark amount as absent a big merit award (won’t qualify for need), it’s not going to make the cut.

its summer and i remember anxiously waiting for my first day, so i’m gonna bump this thread for any incoming freshman with any questions!

I am from LA and like a lot about Syracuse, but worried about what the winters are like, especially for those of us not used to dark, snowy winters.

@klevine I’m not gonna lie, they can be really brutal. The wind chill really killed me sometimes, I was in actual pain sometimes when walking to class sometimes the wind chill was that bad haha. As for the snow, they’re really good about clearing it but if it just snowed definitely give yourself some more time to get to classes as it takes longer to walk. However, and this is how I think about it, during the winter you’re really only outside to travel to places, so the weather is such a minor thing to me.

I have a question about applying to Bandier/Newhouse and would really appreciate some feedback!! I am applying to the Bandier Program but due to its high selectivity, I know my chances of getting in are slim. If I didn’t get into Bandier, I am still extremely interested in attending Newhouse. My stats are a 3.98 UW, 4.7 W, 32 ACT so I think my chances of getting into Newhouse itself are good but I want to write my supplements about Bandier. Will that hurt my chances of getting into Newhouse if I’m rejected from Bandier? Should I try to write about how Bandier and Newhouse separately appeal to me, or will that give them more reason to reject me from Bandier knowing I’m ok with going to Newhouse even if I don’t get into Bandier? Sorry if this is confusing!!
