My daughter called me during O-Week to tell me she attended her first frat party: the Chabad House. Hey, it’s UChicago. She had a good time and enjoyed some of the kosher food.
“People are nearly always willing to help a housemate or friend or even just a random person that desperately messages them at 3 am asking for help to look over their paper or explain a concept they don’t get or help them with a problem. That’s just the way the culture of the school is - we’re here to learn” This is the experience of DD (1st year majoring in the humanities / social sciences) as well. It’s one of the things she looked for in a college.
Hello:
I have a question about the Marine Biology Laboratory (MBL) courses ( I found these courses on the College catalog. It appears each year the College offers several marine biology classes over a 3 week period in early September. Details here (scroll down to September Courses at Marine Biological Laboratory).

BIOS 27720, BIOS 27721 and BIOS 27722
The classes meet daily at the MBL in Woods Hole MA (from 9/2 to 9/22). After completing the 3 week course, students receive 100 credits. Credit for this class can be applied towards the BIO core requirements. After completing this course, students then return back to Chicago for the start of the Fall term (and take an additional 2-3 classes). The classes during the MBL term apparently count towards the fall semester load.
This seems like an easy way to lighten the load. Does anyone have any experience with this? Apart from the cost, is there any downside from doing this?
“Can non-greeks have a good social life?” Yes. And I would add: non-drinking students can have a very enjoyable social life too. There’s lots to do, and it’s a big enough school to find what you want in this respect.
