Just wanted to help out a little, back doing the same thing for my second son. However, my first son is at UCONN Storrs
he is now a sophomore and although they said decisions will be out by March 1, he received in the mail a large envelope on February, 20, 2016. Before it was even in the portal. Any questions happy to help in this brutal process.

Thanks @mrs806 I hope your son is doing well at UCONN. Having looked through past years threads it seems the decisions are usually posted on the last Friday of February and then mailed out with merit aid/honors the week after. Was your son applying to a special program? Is that why he received word a bit earlier? Does your second son want to go to UCONN?
Hello, My first son applied to the school of engineering which is where he is. He was awarded merit in the
acceptance letter. We are from Connecticut and they awarded him $7,500.00 in merit. He turned down honors program. He did not apply early, sent his application in late after their deadline of December 1, for merit and still received it. He originally was looking at other schools more in detail, however, the brutal competition to get into engineering took a toll on him and UCONN wanted him from the beginning. We went to see it and it was the school for him and the price was right. The food is delicious, the school spirit is unmatched and he couldn’t be happier. My second son loves UCONN and we visit all the time but he feels lost there due to size and really wants a smaller school and the competition to get into UCONN in state may not work for him. He is 3.7 GPA which is lower end for business school, they really want 3.8 and above.
Thanks! My D has applied to engineering- she has strong GPA/SATs as we are instate I know the merit awards tend to be smaller & although she has no shortage of ECs- not a big focus on STEM- so we shall see. I am happy to hear your son is having a good experience! I think my D might do better at a smaller school & she has applied to a few privates - we will need some $ inorder for those to become a reality. I went to UCONN ( 10 zillion) years ago for an undergraduate and graduate degree- wonderful education and made friends I still get together with. Most likely will be visiting Storrs and other possibilities again in the Spring. Best wishes with your 2nd son and his decision- so many of the business programs are super competitive!
Good Luck to you as well!! It seems the competition is fierce no matter where you look… What they have to go
through to go to school is really incredible. I will say that my son says turning down honors program to feel out what engineering was like was the best decision he ever made. He says that no one can prepare ahead of time for what they will experience in engineering and he would tell anyone buckle up because this is no joke!!
@mrs806 - We are from out of state. Did a quick visit in the summer, but will do a more detailed tour/husky for a day if my son gets in there. One thing we noticed - at first glance there seems to be no “town.” Where do parents stay when they come to visit? There didn’t seem to be any hotels in the area, though I haven’t done a google search.
Hello, There is a hotel Nathan Hale right on the campus, which is extremely convenient. There are others a few miles out. Best Western not far. The Hilton and some of the better name hotels are 10-13 miles away. There is a great little downtown directly across from the campus. Burger places, pizza, bookstore, candy, cookies, dunkin donuts. Grocery store, CVS etc. Everything you need is right there. The Nathan Hale isn’t cheap but is was a decent hotel. Good Luck !!
Feel Free to ask away…
Hi. My daughter was accepted yesterday for fine art at Storrs. Do you happen to know when we are likely to hear about financial aide? She applied in November around Thanksgiving. We are out of state. Her updated GPA (with first semester senior year grades) is 3.77 her ACT is 30. We don’t qualify for needs based but are hoping for some merit aide.
Hi, Congratulations!! When my son was accepted his merit was included in his acceptance letter. We are in state and the merit tends to be lower, However he did receive 7500.00 per year even though he sent his application after the deadline of Dec 1, for the most consideration of merit based award. GPA was 3.85 unweighted 4.8 weighted ACT 32 accepted to school of engineering.
@mrs806 my daughter finally got her email from UConn, two days after getting her acceptance letter in the mail. It says that she will get her financial aid offer in mid March. We don’t qualify for needs based aid but we’re hoping for some merit aid since we are out of state. Her portal still hasn’t updated to reflect her admission.
@JerseyMom2022 I am surprised that it wasn’t included in her letter. Maybe they do things a little different if you are out of state. Usually merit awards are put in the acceptance and she should certainly qualify for merit as her ACT is top percentage. This process is so confusing!! I realize that there are thousands and thousands of applications but boy so difficult to get answers and with scores like this shouldn’t be this way!!
My son was accepted on Monday. We are in state and no FA letter either. Just called and they said the letters would be out in 2-3 weeks and no physical letter but on the portal. So more waiting but it’s good to be accepted and best of luck to those waiting. No one from DS school has heard yet and there were other fine arts majors like him.
@mrs806 Thank you for answering questions. Any tips on housing? I heard to get deposit early to get better placement. How about the learning communities? What are your thoughts about them? DS is interested in a few but once again I heard it’s firsr come first serve and we won’t know until we hear from all schools so most likely April.
Glad to help!! We sent the deposit in before the deadline not early or anything. It is first come first serve once they open the portal to put in for housing. Learning communities were so tough to get in. After being waitlisted at the two top learning communities he gave up and picked McMahon for freshman housing. This year he and his friends picked Northwest.
@magnetnh My daughter is a Junior. We put in our deposit early freshman year…most freshman were in North or Northwest that year, no matter when your deposit was in. Her sophomore year she was in East…older buildings but bigger rooms and quieter dorms. She is in a set of suites now. As more off campus housing is being built it is easier to get better on campus housing as a soph or junior, but as a freshman you get no say. Last year 2016-2017 the school decided to put almost all freshman, not in a learning community, in Towers. Not sure what they did with freshman this year.
@magnetnh Or I should say requested McMahon and Northwest and that is where they got in. You don’t always get what you request but sometimes it works out.
Hi! I applied as a psychological sciences major and I can’t wait to get my decision! I have a 3.9 gpa and a 32 ACT so I’m really hoping for some merit aid or maybe to even be admitted into the honors program! I was wondering if anyone knows how the budget cuts may affect the school.
