@ucsdcompsci How do dining dollars work? Do you go into a dining hall and swipe in or do you walk around and then give them your card to buy the food on the table?
@jayjay7737 You walk around and order food and then pay for each of the food items you have by its value.
So if you get a burger, fries, salad, you pay for each item individually. You pay less than a person who gets all the same items + a coke or sushi or something.
@ucsdcompsci So is it like you walk around look at the food there and then when you want to buy letās say a burger, you would give them your card to buy the burger? You have the burger on a tray or something And when you want to get fries or some other thing from a different stand you would hand them a card to buy that? Like when do you pay? At the end of getting food or as you get food?
@jayjay7737 When you want to buy a burger, you can order the burger in a food-ordering area and then walk to the register with your burger in CV/Pines/Cafe V.
When you want to buy a burger, you stand in line and get the burger and the line ends at the cashier at OVT/Goodys. But you can get more food if there are other stations around that serve different foods.
The above (with OVT) applies to 64 at their Chinese/deli/cuisine stations, but in their burger station you pay for the burger you want first, then sit down, and servers deliver you your burger.
@ucsdcompsci what are your favorite things about UCSD?
@Heisenberg1700 I love how different the environment can be!
You can go for the chill beach setting at La Jolla Shores, or the party beach ambiance at PB. Or maybe a woodsy setting like Torrey Pines, or more like a desert setting somewhere east lol. Julian has snow in the winter, or you can go to downtown San Diego for a bustling city setting.
Thereās also a huge variety of food ā though the only thing I think is lacking is Chinese Dim Sum which I can easily get at home anyway haha.
I also love my major department and love the computer science curriculum. Itās challenging and the faculty is helpful at the same time, and Iāve met a lot of people with the same major that Iāve made great friends with
My scholarship also provides me with a lot of resources, and thereās orgs for people with scholarships haha. Theyāre also super friendly too.
@ucsdcompsci How long does it take to walk places? Should I be getting a bike or something?
@ucsdcompsci Also Im a vegetarian. Are there good vegetarian food options too?
@jayjay7737 You can get by walking fine except when your classes are all the way across campus and the path is uphill haha. So usually I take distance into consideration when picking classes, and Iāve never really struggled with getting to class.
If youāre still wanting to get a bike, personally I think boards > bikes because youāre less likely to get a board stolen, but many people bring bikes. Theyāre just a little more cumbersome because you have to lock it and everything and itās not always under your watch.
@Heisenberg1700 Muir has a vegan restaurant called Roots, but I donāt think there are too many vegetarian options here. You can check https://hdh.ucsd.edu/DiningMenus/ for menus on campus.
Can you please compare the class sizes in physics 2 series class and the physics 4 series?
Are phys 4b-e class sizes smaller than phys 4a?
@ethanvi Phys 2 series has much larger classes than phys 4. Just checked enrollment numbers and Phys 4 seems about 100-120 people, decreasing to 50 by the time you take Phys 4D. Phys 2A seems to range 200-360 people.
@ucsdcompsci you said that you received the regents scholarship. Would the scholarship award amount be greater if a student were to pick a more expensive housing or meal plan or less if say the student already has health insurance and doesnāt need the university to provide it? Iām asking because it says it will cover need, but I donāt know how that would be calculated.
@itsyaboiUCLA If a student already has health insurance, you can get the university health insurance waived and save about $680 per quarter. This doesnāt affect the regents award amount.
The Regents scholarship itself is a fixed amount, which looks to be $2,000/year this year. The additional need determined by the school is based on a parentās EFC as determined by your FAFSA, but is not technically included with the Regents scholarship and is instead distributed by grants/loans from the university. If a student were to pick a more expensive housing or meal plan, the Regents award amount will not be adjusted, and I donāt think grant/loan amounts would be adjusted either.
How is the computer science program at UCSD? I didnāt have a comp sci class in my school and was wondering how are the lower division classes like for comp sci majors. Iām just scared that with the quarter system, itās going to be hard to keep up with the little experience I have in the field of computer science.
@IBstress UCSD has a comp sci course called CSE 8A for complete beginners to CS. Itās very beginner-friendly and gives you a good basis, and you wonāt be behind compared to other CS majors as many take that class anyway. The catch to this class is that itās based on partner assignments though, which might be good or bad (bad if you have to be carried/carry, good if you have a good balance).
If you think you have a better grasp, you can take CSE 11 which is the intro course for students already somewhat exposed to programming. Itās more fast-paced, and the prof who usually teaches it is a bit tough but extremely good at doing his job.
So no worries about being inexperienced!
any idea when decisions are coming out?
@Heisenberg1700 no.
Thanks ucsdcompsci. If I take Phys 4a and find the course difficult, can I switch to phys 2 series for the subsequent courses? Also are there any labs in the phys 4 series? Labs are not mentioned in the ucsd course description page.
@ethanvi Just to be sure, what major? But yes, you can take the 2 series instead of the 4 series if you find it difficult. People who take PHYS 4 series still have to take PHYS 2CL and PHYS 2DL; thereās no special lab for the 4 series, so you take the 2 seriesā labs if itās required for your major.
