Hi! I was just wondering how much workload an International Studies–International Business major would have as a student in Revelle College. I heard that the GE requirment is the toughest in Revelle College so I am a bit concerned.

Thank you!

@sevstar How often you apply and how difficult it is depends on which capped major you’re attempting to apply to. Also, you can just choose to balance your schedule – it isn’t required for you to take GEs every quarter so you can just take 3 major classes a quarter if you wanted to. My friend who ended up switching to CS did that – 1 GE and 2 major courses a quarter. Of course now I don’t quite recommend anyone undeclared try to switch to CS now, but just balance your schedule lol.

@Exactlee You have to take a lot of useless science classes in Revelle. The language req probably overlaps though (not sure about your majors reqs) but the HUM writing sequence + science reqs makes your major slightly a pain in the butt in Revelle. Definitely doable though.

It says transcripts are due July 1st, but if we take a community college class during the summer how will that apply? Especially if it can counts for a prerequisite for another class. When do we enroll in classes?

what do you think of the computer engineering program? I want to do computer engineering with a focus on software (ECE department)

@AbsolutePetrich You should ask the school about your summer class question. Incoming freshmen enroll in late August.

@Minerclawz Not in it myself but have a few friends who are and they enjoy it a lot! It has a good integration of software and hardware though I know some of yhe ECE classes you take are weeder ECE classes.

UC San Diego is one of my top choices right now. I applied chemical engineering and got in, however my heart is divided between this and comp sci as a major. (I took up coding as a hobby and i find it really interesting). So my question is, how hard is it to switch into cs as a major? Considering chemical engineering is in a different department than cs, would switching majors be a rather difficult process?

How difficult is it to get a single dorm in Warren?

Do you know anything about switching colleges? Is it possible to switch before enrolling in the university?

@cornelius73 If you seriously want to consider CS and DID NOT GET ADMITTED INTO THE MAJOR, DO NOT COME HERE. This is a serious warning everyone has been yelling about on our subreddit and facebook group and whatever else, and it’s because at this point it’s literally up to chance whether you’ll get the major or not. It’s highly competitive and became a random process because of how people were abusing the original system (which was that you basically had to get a 4.0 in screening courses, but people kept dropping classes if they were going to get an A-) so you have a really low chance of getting in now (though the GPA cutoff became a 3.3 instead). I apologize about this but you should consider a place where you actually got in for CS.

@collegecrazy21 You have a 40% chance of getting a single dorm in warren. 0% doubles though bc all warren dorms are either singles or triples.

So it’s rather high.

Would someone mind telling me how exactly the Economics department is at UCSD as well as how much does the college system affect transfer students or how it affects the transfers? Thank you for any help!

I want to do a study abroad program. Can I get my GE’s done while studying abroad?

@BlueDog457 I don’t know too much about the Economics dept myself but college system is negligible for transfers since they get a lot of GEs done anyway, and they don’t have to worry about living location bc most transfers live in the village.

@ucstudent77 Yes. Each country has whatever type of classes they offer that allow you to fulfill specific GEs.

I’m really interested in going to UCSD but I read your previous response to transferring to a cs and now I’m really worried. I was planning on transferring into general biology which is a different department. Are my chances low? Is there almost no chance of changing into a capped major? Would Finanace/Economics be an easier major to transfer into?

i’m deciding between cal poly slo CpE (easy major change to CS if I wanted) and UCSD ECE: CpE. which school would you think would have the better program? I’m looking to see which colleges would provide me more with opportunities and connections to the industry (looking to work after college). I’m also not sure if I would survive in the large classes at UCSD compared to the small classes at SLO

Hi, I know CS students have priority for enrolling CS classes. But as Data Science students with computer science courses in the major, do we have to wait for the remaining spots just like other non CS major students do?

@ucsdcompsci Thanks for your very useful posts. I want to ask about Bioengineering.
Current status: Admitted for Fall 2018 Undeclared – Physical Sciences and in Marshall College
Had applied for: Bioengineering
I am very excited about UCSD and really want to attend. But how difficult is it to declare BioEng major later if not admitted into the major as a freshman? Your warning about CS gave me shivers about capped majors. Is BioEng one of them? How competitive is it to declare it? I do not yet have an offer for direct admittance into BioEng in any other university except Boston University Engineering. I am an international student, and it seems like in many other US universities students simply declare a major at the end of their freshman year. Thanks.

Oops, guess I caused a little panic. My warning was more specific to CS majors in particular.

@sevstar Each major has an entirely different process. My warning applied to CS in particular; biology seems to be a much easier major to get into and does not have any cap on how many times you can apply (IIRC).

@Minerclawz Class sizes are negligible. Lol I was originally in your place deciding between those two schools though. If you want a more practical experience, go to Cal Poly. If you want a more theoretical one (and be able to build upon it) go to UCSD. If not, visit both schools and find out which environment you like more. In terms of industry connections UCSD may be easier bc of location though.

@ningve Not too sure about DSE major priority (doesnt seem like they have it) but the CSE courses required for the DSE major aren’t that difficult to get into since they are CSE theory courses. The CSE programming ones are harder to get into.

@minerva2000 I am not too sure about the competitiveness of the Bioengineering major, and the website does not specify how many times you’re able to apply. You should call the bioeng dept and ask these questions:

  • How many times am i able to apply for the major
  • How many people apply/are accepted each year
  • How competitive is the process
and make your decisions based on those answers. If the number of people accepted is low and you have a maximum number if applications then you’re better off going to a school where you got admitted in your major.

why exactly is it so hard to switch into cs. I thought it was just prereqs and maintaining a set gpa? Also, how hard is to switch into aerospace?

@cornelius73 That’s true for like all capped majors except for CS at the moment, but it isn’t enough to maintain the set GPA. You have to actually have a higher gpa than other applicants because they rank them out of GPA then select the highest ones. Like the major cap for CS used to be 4.0 – they’ve since changed the major cap + admittance into a 3.3 cap + lottery system because people kept dropping classes and retaking when they even touched A-. However, because of the lottery system, getting the major is literally luck based and is just not worth it now because no matter how hard you try there is no guarantee.

Aerospace looks easier though, but call the dept and ask for how many majors they usually accept and the average GPA accepted.

I want to go to UCSD, but I am slightly interested in their CS. I am not sure whether I will like it or not. Since the chances of me entering the Comp Sci major is so slim, should I consider another campus?
