@ucsdcompsci Last question for now: do you think a cc class to finish off the calc series would be a good use of such a long summer? I noticed class doesn’t start until really late September.
@ucsdcompsci Thank you - dual enrolled senior year in post BC Calc class that looks very similar to Math 20C, so will probably need to call them. But if the transfer applicants are ranked by GPA, do you know what they do with someone who has no GPA, because they waived out of the prereqs? Received 5s on all AP exams.
@CopperlineX2 I think it would be a good use of time if nothing else is being done in the summer otherwise!
@mclmom Unfortunately I do not, I apologize
Hi, I got admitted Warren poli-sci. I heard there are a lot of GEs you have to take, would I have to take a lot of maths and sciences for credit? (I don’t like STEM lol)
@minimouse77 Do you have any APs you can waive? There’s not a LOT of GEs, but an okay amount. Looks like the minimum amount of math/sci/engineering courses you can take is 6 (NOT counting AP waiving). You should actually look at the GE requirements yourself though. As an engineering major I’m not a good judge of what’s too much math lol
Hi. I got accepted into UC Berkeley but I really like UCSD and I feel like UCSD is more suited for me since I can’t really handle cut throat competition and I’m really just an average student. I’m really unsure about which school to choose because it would be such a shame not to accept the academic opportunities that Berkeley offers. Is there any real difference between the two other than the stereotypes? Can I please have your opinion on this? I really can’t decide and it was your posts that got me interested into UCSD. Thank you!
Ucsdcompsci, sorry to trouble you again.
I waited too long (busy with a project at school and exams). I told dad that I would do it last week when there were seats. Now Linear algebra (Math 18) is full. Is there a waiting list? What are the chances a waiting will work?
I can also take the lin alg course at several community colleges which are equivalent to Math 18 (according to assist.org) Will ucsd accept that? I assumed they would accept that and the multivariable calc (math 20c) and diff eq (20d) as well. Am I right? If they do, it will save me a lot of money.
@ethanvi Yes you can take all the classes at a CC and save money as long as Assist shows an equivalency.
@sevstar IMO visit both schools, but TBH what I dislike about Berkeley is its 1 year housing guarantee (and expensive off-campus housing) and the setting around it. It feels really rugged and has a lot of homeless people, and although riots are rare and not sponsored by the school, I had a personal experience with a friend regarding them I prefer not to share (to not sway your opinion!!). However you should visit and compare both programs that you got admitted for and make your opinion based on that!
Would it be hard to obtain a SWE job as a Computer Engineer @ UCSD? I’ll be competing with a bunch of other people for internships
@CaliCSEngineer aren’t you competing with the same people even if you don’t go you ucsd? Not knowledgeable about how CS internships work, but unless they have a max/quota for each school you’ll be competing with UCSD engineers whether you go to UCSD or SDSU
@CaliCSEngineer DoctorP is right. Really it’s just choosing a school that would give you a competitive edge over other applicants in the nation.
I’m interning for a big4 myself this summer – If you want more advice on CS internships and where I’m interning PM me
Would someone mind telling me how big class sizes usually are at UCSD once you get into upper division courses (specifically Economics if possible) because I would be transferring in as a junior in fall.
@BlueDog457 looking at random ECON classes, it looks like a range of 60-180 people in a section in an upper div class, where classes have 1-2 sections.
On the data science undergrad website, it states that data science isn’t an engineering major at this time. Since I got accepted into Warren, it means that I have to do PofCs instead of Area Studies. I have AP credit for history for U.S and World that are 8 units each, but it’s capped at 12 altogether. Would that mean I would only need to take 3 upper division courses for the “Humanities” PofC? It sucks that data science isn’t considered an engineering major at the moment with the extra GEs I have to do. I had Warren as my first choice college because its the ideal college for engineers with its area studies, but would you recommend switching to another college such as Sixth or Muir if possible?
Also, I was wondering how is Warren as a college with its social aspect and dorms?
@IBStress I think it does mean you only have to do upper divs. I don’t think the PofC track is that bad though; I have a lot of Warren Math-CS friends who think it’s fine. (Math-CS is also on the PofC track.)
Switching colleges is incredibly difficult. You would have to prove that you can graduate earlier, though you still need to take some of the writing sequence anyway.
Warren dorms == 40% singles, 60% triples. Highly suggest getting a single because triples are so CRAMPED. Social life will probably be initially your suitemates, though if you go to your RA’s events you can meet more people on your floor. Overall it’s okay, but better if you like your suite.
High key I hated my suite LOL.
Do you think the name “UCSD” carries alot of weight compared to another university like Cal Poly SLO (competitive advantage for internships)?
How much does the “college choice” affect your experience at UCSD?
I got accepted to UCSD through my third choice of “Marshall college” Although I plan on being a Mechanical Engineer and I’m not sure how a Marshall college which was along the lines of law? (correct me if I’m wrong) would help or conflict in my major.
My first and second choice were Warren and Muir.
@cpark252 makes no difference except your GEs and the part of campus you live in. As long as you got your desired major, your residential college doesn’t really change anything impactful
Thanks @DoctorP
Anyone want to share their experience and opinion for the Marshall college? Wasn’t my first choice but I’m hoping it suits me.
If so how can I also change my college within ucsd? I really prefer muir or Warren
@cpark252 I’m also an incoming Marshall student and got to visit the school a couple days ago. I stayed with a friend in a Muir apartment, so I didn’t get the overnight experience of a Marshall dorm, but I did get the chance to visit one. The Marshall dorms are super close to the Cog Sci/Social Science building (which is a benefit for me, a psych pre-med) and are right next to OVT (Oceanview Terrace), which I think was one of the best dining halls I got to see on campus; They have make-your-own pizza and salad bars, plus a sweets/coffee station (the glazed donut I got there was phenomenal, and there’s gelato!). The dorms are pretty much the same no matter the college (they all look like drab hotel rooms with great views) just different layouts, but one thing that Marshall gets that I don’t think anyone else does is private balconies. There are also two story upperclassmen apartments, where the building separates suites vertically, not horizontally. While Warren college would put you right next to the engineering buildings, Marshall puts you closer to the heart of the campus + is uphill, so you’d be biking down to your classes in the morning rather than walking up from Warren (for your classes other than engineering). Other than living right next your major’s building, there aren’t any real benefits to being in Warren, except maybe having 1 less writing quarter than TMC. Muir combines both Marshall and Warren in a way, having 2 writing quarters like Warren and being near Marshall, but these aren’t huge improvements in the long term. At the very least, living farther from regular classes will help you avoid the freshman 15. Based on the website, Warren actually seems to have the easiest GE’s of the 3, but not by much. They also have special circumstances for engineering majors, making it slightly easier, but again, not by much. One benefit of Marshall is you don’t need to meet a specific Diversity course requirement (I’m guessing because it’s combined with our writing course?) I’m personally really excited for Marshall, mainly because of OVT, and the fact that there really aren’t all that many differences between the colleges (at least the ones you and I were considering; I also originally put Muir as #1, though Marshall was my second).
Hopefully I’ll see you in Marshall when the year starts! Good luck with whatever you decide!
