@sd9754‌
I was also OOS and knew nobody, and it was great because of that. The split is about 70% in state and 30% OOS. Even many people that are in state will look to meet new people and you will not feel that because you are from a different state you will struggle to meet people.

It really comes down to the person, will you put yourself out there and try to meet people? During orientation and the first week of school everybody is trying to find their place, meet everybody you can and talk to anyone you see. You never know who may become your next best friend or roommate, don’t just assume because they already have all the people they want around them.

Don’t be afraid about not knowing anyone, plenty of people come in that way!

@mdhelp I was accepted as a part of the Global Communities program and I will definitely be taking part as it sounds like an awesome opportunity. I was wondering if you knew if we could pick our roommate and if they would have to be apart of the Global Communities program or if they could be in any community that also lives in Dorchester?

Thanks mdhelp!!

One question: Is it better to apply to the Business LEP right away as a transfer student or get all gateway courses done before even applying?

@mkgoggins - I’m pretty sure that you have to complete the gateway courses (with the required GPA) before you can apply for an internal transfer

I think I really just want to go into University Honors but I am concerned since I have to distribute my 140 points t/o the programs. It only lets you put max 75 points in one program. My next possible is ACES. So then if admissions looks at 75 points UH and 65 points ACES (not interested in any other program) they might think I am just about equally interested in both programs. How do I express I really want UH?

Hi @collegenj - My D faced the similar choice last year. She put 75 points on University Honors and 65 on her second choice and wrote in the paragraph part about how she wanted the University Honors program. FYI, University Honors is the largest of the Honors Programs, so if you get your preference early, you will probably get it.

For those who have submitted their honors preferences - after you hit submit, did you receive an email confirming it? My son filled it out today and hasn’t received a confirmation yet…

Hi @need2learn - As I recall from last year, my D did not get any confirmation right away. I don’t remember when she was notified, but it happened eventually. Hopefully someone can give you a time frame.

I applied for COE and had chosen Computer Science as a 2nd choice but got admitted to Letter of Sciences. Understand this is in the Undecided category. I have also been admitted to University of Wisconsin-Madison COE in the Computer science dept. Both are OOO but I am on the East coast. Do you think I would be able to get into UMD computer science if I accept. Is there a risk in signing up for UMD L&S and then not getting into CS. University of Wisconsin gets me directly into CS as a freshman so I wonder if I should rule out UMD?

@mdhelp‌ and @Vctory‌ I got into Computer Science and and invitation to the Scholars program. would it benefit me to do ACES rather than the scholars program(Business, Society, and Economy) internship and career wise? can i switch into ACES after sophomore year? How much more accelerated is the ACES program than the regular Comp sci departments?

@mdhelp‌ thank you for the info. I would also like to ask if more people at Maryland pick there own roomates or have the university match. Would it be a good idea to find a roommate through the Facebook group or let the school pick for me?

@PundergradA19‌ I believe they would have to be in the global communities program, but that would be a question you could ask reslife either by phone or at one of the admitted student days.

@mkgoggins‌ In order to be considered you have to have all of courses listed on lep.umd.edu completed for business. If you apply before those classes are done, you will not be considered.

@hthob101‌
Computer science is not an LEP program, if you are able to meet the requirements of the program you will be able to do computer science. http://undergrad.cs.umd.edu/prospective-cs-students should give you more information, as would an admitted students day. Not sure why you were not put into computer science directly, you could email the admissions office and someone should be able to either switch you into it or explain why you were not admitted into CS.

Make sure you visit Madison in the winter :open_mouth:

@Noogler‌
Its really going to be up to you, if computer security interest you I would encourage you to strongly consider the ACES program. The business school at Maryland is going to begin offering minors, that would probably offer you just as much experience as the BSE program will.

For internship and career things, you need to go to the career fairs and network (just talk to people, go to things when companies visit and big name people speak). Talk to the career center and apply early, do not wait until March to find an internship, many internships and jobs are filled in the Fall.

@sd9754‌

People find their roommates all different ways, sometimes people know people before they go to the school, sometimes they meet them at admitted student days or orientation, and some people request people they met through Facebook. It’s really up to you, plenty of people also have random roommates. All of those ways work sometimes and sometimes it just doesn’t work out.

Upper level concentrations? It looks like one has to take at least 4 classes to fulfill this requirement (300-400 level). This is about equivalent to a minor in most other schools. My son will be majoring in comp sci. Is there some concentration that most CS majors gravitate towards. He also wants to do the ACES program, so he already will have a full load.

@nursegigi‌ Not sure what your question is, ACES has two aspects, the first aspect is ACES 1 which is what you would be invited to. ACES 2 is the focus in cybersecurity that is what it sounds like the student is looking for. You do not have to complete ACES 1 to apply to be into ACES 2.

Anything more specific about CS would be best answered by calling them directly or speaking with them at admitted student days. As I tell everybody, trying to separate yourself in the classroom is hard, you have to do it outside of it. With CS that may be learning other languages, developing something yourself, or participating in programs like ACES. Of course getting internships/experience will be important as well.

Does anyone know how good the gluten-free options are at UMD? I know there are sandwiches & salads, and when I visited the first time we ate at South Campus dining hall and I had some GF pasta— but it wasn’t very good :frowning: I can live with crappy tasting food though just wondering how much variety, the convenience, do they have a good fruit selection? idk any help is appreciated!

@nursegigi Really appreciate your response and advice. I have signed up for the UMD admitted students day as well as heading to UW-Madison in Feb to experience their winter :smile:
I rechecked my UMD app and it looks like I picked Computer Science - Cybersecurity instead of Computer Science. Will contact Admissions tomorrow. Thx again for your response
