@bluebird1234 yes what twogirls said is definitely worth trying! Other than that, I’m not really sure what you could do besides just walk around and see the campus on your own. If you can get to the Pit, that’s the heart of the campus and the main quad is right by it, so I would definitely recommend at least looking around there if you come.

Hi! thanks for taking the time to answer so many questions, it’s really nice of you. I’m an OOS admitted student from FL as well, so we have that in common haha. I was wondering if you could give some advice about housing, specifically about Granville. Is the stereotype of it being the “greek dorm” true? Also, would you say that by living in Granville you’re missing out on the “freshman experience” of living on south campus? And if you’re currently in Granville/South, what do you love and not love about it? I know there are threads about this, but i’ve heard different things from different people and was wondering what your thoughts and experiences were specifically

@sirhcgled Congratulations! So something to keep in mind for freshman housing for next year - the “freshman experience” will no longer be contained mainly in the south campus dorms. There are a couple dorms on South and then a bunch on North that are going to be freshman dorms, so definitely contact Carolina Housing to see which ones are actually going to be freshman dorms. I am living on south campus this year in Koury (the honors dorm). I love Koury because the rooms are pretty big and the whole building has 4-person suites, so I’m not sharing a bathroom with like 20 other people. I believe there are only 3 other dorms that have 4-person suites and a couple of them are going to be upperclassmen dorms next year. I do not know much about Granville, but I have a few friends there and they have said that Granville seems to be a better fit for people who are more into partying and greek life, but the rooms are really nice. As far as the “freshman experience” goes, I really don’t think there’s anything super special about it. I mean, yes, we all live pretty close together, but many of my friends are from my dorm itself, which wouldn’t be any different if you lived in Granville or any of the other freshman dorms. Also, the main part of campus is on North campus where the classes, Union, libraries, etc are, so I’m there from 9 AM to around 8 or 9 PM everyday anyway. Because everything is on North campus, I personally don’t love being on South campus because it’s a good 15 minute trek up to your classes every day so it’s really inconvenient to get to your room during the day. However, this completely depends on what you are looking for. South campus dorms are much closer to the Dean Dome, Kenan-Flagler (the business school), and a few other things.

Would you speak to freshman support at UNC. We have friends with freshman students at UNC & they say their experience has been sink or swim compared to other schools. Many schools have the living learning communities in the dorm for freshman and work hard to make sure the academic & social experience is smooth. The UNC experience has not been that way and since they have kids at other schools along with UNC it is easy for them to compare. Thanks for any info.

Hey! I’m coming to Chapel Hill next year as a study abroad student from the UK, and I just have a couple of questions about housing. Are there many third years living in your dorm, or do they tend to live off campus? Also, do you know if exchange/study abroad students tend to be placed together? This may sound weird but I don’t really want to live in a dorm full of other exchange students from the UK. Thanks

Are there any current music/ vocal students on here? I am hoping to transfer in from a university that is very arts driven, and I just want to know about the audition and admissions experience at UNC!

@prof16 We do have living learning communities, but I personally do not know of anyone who is in one freshman year. We mostly live in the freshman dorms, which is where people tend to find friends and so on. Ngl the first couple months of this year were tough. I had a hard time finding friends and the only reason I wasn’t completely alone was because of my friends from my scholarship program. You really do have to make an effort to find friends, but everyone is so nice here that it becomes much easier with some time. Like I said before, the best way to find friends is to just get involved on campus. Signing up for clubs during Fall Fest was one of the best decisions I’ve made here because I’ve made some really great friends through the clubs that I joined. However, my best friends are those that I met through my dorm. Also, the first week of first semester is filled with activities that are part of the WOW (week of welcome), so that was also a great way to get used to the campus a little and to meet more people. I hope that kind of helps.

@purplepanda211 I totally get that! So I’m in a freshmen only dorm, so I only live with other freshmen. I’m not too sure about how many third years live on campus, but I definitely know of at least a handful that do. Almost everyone goes off campus for the fourth year, but I do believe that a good number of third years stay on campus. A lot of second years also stay on campus, if that helps at all.

@gwil7897 I’m so sorry, but I really don’t know much about the arts at UNC. I have a friend who is very involved with theater here, but that’s about it. I would try checking the other UNC threads maybe?
