Thanks. We recently put cash on the One Card and got a meal plan with Flex dollars. They make the process very easy.

When should I begin to write essay? (I’m class of 2016)
I’m first generation applicant, so don’t have anyone to guide me through…and the ED is coming soon

For the Common App, I wrote mine when I began applying for colleges (mid-late September). I wrote my UNC essay a week before I submitted my application (regular decision deadline). If you decide that you want people to proofread and make corrections, then I would highly recommend starting two to three weeks before deadline so that there is enough time to edit your essay. It depends on you and how confident you are in your writing skills. @ACDC666

Hi ! I just finished my sophomore year and I’m going into junior year this fall in high school … North Carolina is My dream dream college and I just love the place and the campus and basically everything about it. I’m an out of state student and I have a 4.1 GPA.

I’m planning on taking the SAT Jan 2016 and I’m shooting for a 2100 ( I’m taking a very rigorous SAT class)

I’m in top 50 in my grade, and I’m taking four AP classes next year and 5 senior year.

I’m part of 9 clubs and have so many volunteer hours.

I wanted to know if that’s good enough and if I should improve anything ( I know my GPA is little bit low for an out of state )

Also I’m gonna apply for Biology or Chemistry for my Major.

Also please tell me anything I need to know about UNC … Anything I need to do … Anything to improve … Besically anything That will help … Thank you so much !

Hi eagle2426! As an accepted Tar Heel, I have some advice for you.

  1. Doing well on your SAT will certainly help your cause. A 2100 is a great score, but I know people who have been rejected with a 2250. Likewise, I know people who have been accepted with an 1850. It’s better to have good SAT scores to support good grades, and not good SAT scores to support bad grades.

  2. Make sure you are on an upward trend. If you didn’t do great freshman year, doing better year by year does wonders in the admissions process.

  3. The BIGGEST advice I can give you is to DROP SOME OF THOSE CLUBS. UNC does NOT want to see you in 9 clubs. After speaking with many admissions counselors, they will all tell you: UNC does not want well-rounded students who are good at everything. UNC wants diverse students who are good at most things but great at some things. Stick with 3-5 clubs and assume as much leadership as you can.

  4. Write KILLER essays. I know it isn’t true, but in many cases it seems like UNC barely looks at test scores and grades and instead spends all time looking at your essays. They want to see depth, insight, and a unique view of the world that is both inspiring and enlightening. Spend lots of time on those essays.

  5. Get a great teacher recommendation. Don’t get a recommendation from a sophomore teacher, unless you have that teacher again for Junior year. And make sure your recommendation can speak to more than just your academics and also your values, work ethic, and integrity. I would suggest a teacher who is also one of your club advisors.

Good luck, I hope to see you as a Tar Heel!

Thank you EvanLinett !! It was very helpful and I’m glad that I could hear back from someone who is going to UNC !!

My daughter received an email stating that if her final transcript is not received by July 10th they may cancel her enrollment. Did anybody else receive this? She was told by UNC not to worry and to try and find out when the HS plans to send the final transcript, but I found the wording of the email alarming.

Does anyone now the strength and details of the political science department? And how much harder is it for an out of stater to get admission into UNC?

OOS admission to UNC is extremely competitive.

@twogirls Do u know where i can find the stats for OOS admission.

I read that information somewhere but forgot exactly where- I will think about it and get back to you.

I visited last summer and i think the information was given but that was last summer before i took the ACT

@noname87 I have the scores for OOS now I just hope that I moved up 8 spots in class rank this year. (to get into top 10%)

My daughter registers from home on Wednesday. How hard is it to get classes- any classes? Right now every class is full but I have to assume that some will open on the day she registers.

For each group of freshman, they open classes up so every freshmen has the same chance. Just make sure that she is ready to go the second her group is eligible. She cannot afford to delay even a minute. It will be very difficult to get the exact classes she wants. However, there will be a lot of movement once open enrollment occurs. If she has 40 courses chosen, she should be fine.

Thank you. She will be ready as soon as it opens.

twogirls - we just went through it on Wednesday. Make sure she has tons of options ready to go in her cart (numerous options of times for the same class, etc.). When registration opened, we were ready to go immediately but every single class was gone in seconds. However, by the end of the day we ended up with pretty much the schedule we wanted (albeit no Chem101 Lab but I understand that will sort itself out the 1st week of class). So, be prepared to spend a few hours online waiting for classes to open back up, etc.,l As noname said, there was lots of movement once enrollment got going and the situation was fluid throughout the day and into the next day.

Thank you. She just said that a few of her classes opened up, which of course does not mean she will get them! She is planning to take Wednesay off and will spend the day sitting in front of the computer.
