Ask Questions about Vassar Here!

Well, seeing as this is the Vassar board, I’d think of taking this question elsewhere.

Also, it’s a state school. They’re not exactly known for being terribly selective.

Post your same question to OSU’s board at
[Ohio State University - Columbus - College Confidential](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/ohio-state-university-columbus/)

Hope that helps and good luck. :)

I’m a freshman in high school and I’ve always been focused on my grades. I’ve never made a c on a report card in my life. I’m involved in sports and I’m on the drumline. This year has been a rough year for me from classes to family issues and I think I’m about to get my first c…my dream has always been to to a university and major as a nurse or anything close to that in the medical field. Will this c ruin my chances? Or should I stop worrying and do better next time?

Do you mean specifically your chances with Wesleyan or just good schools in general? Either way it won’t RUIN your chances but you should still try your best to avoid the C.

Try to avoid it, but don’t freak out.
I got Cs, plural, as a freshman and I still got into Vassar on RD, which is far more selective than EDI or II. They were in honors math classes, so they counted as Bs, but, still. My GPA was still very high even with them. It also depends on your test scores and things like that. I’m also just kind of rubbish at math, and Vassar knew that feel. So, here’s an example of someone who got Cs and still got into Vassar. If this is your first C…well, it’s going to sting. Try very hard not to have one, but don’t have a panic attack if you do, especially if you continue to improve later on in high school, which I did, you still have a chance. Don’t freak out.

One C as a fourteen year old is not going to ruin your life.

Any tips for someone sending their ED application soon? I have everything just about completed…any last minute tips? What does Vassar look for the most when selecting students?

how long do EOP questions have to be??

Hey.
I’m an international student. Just gave my sat and score 1600. Will be giving it again. Hoping for at least 1800 this time.
My aim is to go to ucla. It’s my dream university.
What are my chances to get in?
I get above 90% that is a 3.4/4 gpa
I’m one of the top students in my class
I’m the cultural secretary of the commerce group in my school.
Have participated and won in many theatre shows.
Know how to play guitar.
Skating since 2nd grade.
HOBBIES :
Basket ball
Tennis
Table tennis
Swimming
Playing guitar
Singing
Dancing

I know my sat score is bad but I’ll try to improve it. But do I have my chances?

Well, pennyso, first of all, you will get more relevant feedback from the UCLA page than the Vassar page!

But, for help with chancing yourself online (at least as accurate as what other students will be able to tell you), yu might look at:

1) the College ******* page for UCLA: http://**************.com/university-of-california----los-angeles/

At the bottom of the page (for almost all the colleges on College *******) is a “compare yourself” chart- it’s not the total picture, but it will give you an idea. Based on that table, the middle 50% of students accepted at UCLA have a 2200 SAT and a 3.74 GPA.

–> note that the word in **** is prow ler (joined up), and the second set of stars is both words next to each other- the College Confidential website stars it out!

2) If you go to the UCLA website, the admissions profile (and almost every college will have similar information) for the class entering in Fall, 2012:

[Profile of Admitted Freshmen, Fall 2012 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/Adm_fr/Frosh_Prof12.htm)

you will see that more than half the students had SATs over 2100 and only 16% had less than 1800, and more than 88% of the accepted students had GPAs over 3.7 (unweighted).

Hope that helps.

wait some clarification…

Is your SAT 1600/2400? that is legit 400 or so points too low for any decent school.

Also how does a 90% average translate to a 3.4? Wouldnt that be at least a 3.7?

Also are you asian? Just curious…i know its every asian internationals dream school :3

If you have enough money, you can just pay sticker price at UCLA and you will prob still get in with your scores.

Still dont understand how you can be top of your class with your GPA and SAT…

Study the SAT as hard as you can and try for a better score.

I’m an international applicant (Indian). I’ll be applying for the class of '18. After really researching many schools, I realized that I really want to go to Vassar. So, in all probability, I’ll apply ED.
What does Vassar look for in an applicant? Are SAT scores important? My ECs are weak, but I’ll try to work on them until the application. What’s the most important part of the application? Does being a female lower my chances? (I read somewhere that they want more males :/)

See post #2 at http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/vassar-college/1439234-how-unrealistic-vassar-me.html</a></p>

Thanks. Got a lot of info from there.
How good is the science program at Vassar? It seems like a more artsy school, and I’m interested in studying Mathematics (and CS) along with psychology. A lot of posts I saw (in other threads) say that it’s not very well-equipped for sciences, except for biological sciences. Is there any truth to that? How’s the faculty for CS and math?

Vassar is building a new science building in the next year. Check out the math and computer science classes to see it there is enough depth. S has had excellent experiences with the math classes - he is majoring in a science (not biology) and was able to take a third year engineering course in the summer at a local university and get an A. Even though Vassar does not offer engineering classes, the math and science classes at Vassar totally prepared him to succeed.

How many students major in theatre each year and what is the male/female ratio in this major?

About fourteen percent of the degrees conferred are in the visual and performing arts. Vassar doesn’t publish the male/female ratio. If a definitive number of drama majors and the male/female ratio is important, I’m sure the department will be happy to answer your questions. (845) 437–5250

Untamedgoddess, I’m aware of a CS major who was accepted (so far) to two prestigious summer internship programs. Both internships include a very generous stipend. Apparently the admission committees thought highly of Vassar’s CS program.

Thanks, but how many degrees are conferred by the theatre dept. Unfortunately the common data set lumps all visual and performing
together.

My daughter is interested in Vassar’s computer science program. Any information about the program would be greatly appreciated.

Thank-you!

I was just wondering how much money I would get. there are three members in my family me my mom and dad. my dad is the only who works. He makes around $23.000 a year. so how much money would i get with FAFSA and cal grant

Also I have a BOGW if I get FAFSA and or cal grant will BOGW still pay my classes and do i have to pay back any money I get thanks.

Hi pinkmimi,

If admitted, you will receive a need-based financial aid package no later than April 1st. Vassar offers aid based on demonstrated need, and usually includes a Vassar Scholarship, Federal Direct Stafford Loans, and a Work Study. If your family income is less than $60,000, then Vassar will remove your Direct Stafford Loans and replace them with an increase to your Vassar Scholarship respectively.

Your FAFSA EFC may or may not reflect accurately your aid award offered. But like the FAFSA Vassar awards based on financial status.

I’m afraid I do not know and would not be able to tell you how Cal Grants / BOGW will affect financial aid offered.

My recommendation to you is, if admitted, to relax, and then once your financial aid package arrives you can contact Financial Aid if you have inquiries about your aid award
