Ask vicissitudes: Spring Admits (FAQ included)

How's the FPF program? do u think i have a chance at getting a housing offer since i live about five hours away from berkeley? what should i do if i dont get offered housing? go to a community college near home instead?

Does anyone know if we will able to know our lottery numbers yet? Because I think I know someone who called and found out what their number was before the housing assignments came out last year..

Yeah I've heard of people doing that before and sometimes they tell you and sometimes they don't. Honestly just wait for housing offers to come out, it's not a big deal.

Generally from what I've seen, if you live farther away you have a better shot of getting housing. If you don't get housing, I'd recommend looking for other options, there's Themed Housing, Tau House (which is meh), apartments (socially dead), co-ops (also meh, you have to do chores but it's cheap). CC if you want to save money.

aww, why is tao house "meh?" i was thinking about applying to that one if i didn't get housing

i was also thinking about hillside residence hall; do you know anything about that one? also, are these kinds of residence halls mostly freshman, or a mix of people from all grades?

I called up housing, assignments come out July 11th

they haven't done lottery numbers yet

I was in theme housing last year and let me tell you, I think there were more Spring Admits there than Fall Freshman! All, in all, lots of fun!

Tau House is a pretty good option, I'd take it over apartment or co-op. If you're interested, definitely apply. It's just not my cup of tea.

I'm not sure what hillside residence hall is.

Hillside residence hall seems more fun and less structured than Tao house. I checked them both out - Tao house seemed very well mantained and very comfortable, but it seemed way to structured and stuffy and insular to me. Hillside has a smaller number of students but it seemed like they were allowed more freedom and it looked like better times.

I just called up Cal Housing right now and found out my lottery number. 16 BABY!!!!!!!
They said I have an offer right now, but they aren't sending out the official ones until Monday.
Good luck to everyone else.

offers got mailed

BOWLES?! BOWLES?! YOU HAVE TO BE F**KING KIDDING ME.

****...I didn't get an email
that means I didn't get an offer?

my lottery number's 175.. they said that the first round of housing goes from 1-150, and that there might be a second round of housing.

im crossing my fingers..

I just called and was told my lottery number is 164. The person I was talking to also said that it depends on whether or not the first round of people accept their housing offers.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed, but I really don't think I'm going to get a dorm that I'd like, so I'm going to check out Westminster house

hurry with westminster house, it is filling up quick. i got one of the last guy quad rooms.

I don't really understand the lottery number business.
My lottery number is 264 but the guy on the telephone mentioned that I was 125 on the waiting list because at the moment the numbers are up to 139? (He was not all that helpful, I must say! very vague... ALTHOUGH he was kind <sarcasm, on="" my="" part,="" of="" course;="" only="" because="" i'm="" angry="" at="" this="" whole="" process=""> enough to tell me that I had very little chance of getting Cal housing.)
Anyway, what I'm saying is that I didn't understand my conversation with the guy on the telephone from Cal Housing and would appreciate some guidance.
I am not willing to give up on Cal housing! I can't believe how jipped I feel from this whole 'Spring admit' business.
( :- P Sorry, I whine way too much!)</sarcasm,>

Hi guys, congrats to those who got housing.

For those who didn't (125 on the waitlist does seem like a no-go), I'm sorry and I feel for you. Start looking for alternative options now. Spots do open up spring semester, and you are guaranteed housing your second year. A lot of second years are in the dorms and it's a lot of fun. Anyway, not being in the dorms does suck, but sometimes Berkeley likes to screw you over. Start getting used to it; you have to take the bad with the good. It's just a part of college.

After a whole night's sleep (lots of tossing and turning was involved! haha), I think I can accept my sad place on the waiting list.
If worst comes to worst, I'll have to commute via BART (2 hours round trip! #_#; ), which will save my parents a lot of money anyhow! I guess now I really have to get involved with Cal through student groups/clubs to meet new people!

Thanks a lot for the help!

There might still be places in the private dorms. We checked out Westminster house & the rooms were nicer than the ones in the Units. Here's the link:
Westminster House - home
Gorrill house also looks very nice and it'll probably be filled with FPF students. Here's the link:
Gorrill House

what number did you guys call to get your lottery number?
i am totally confused at this point can somebody please fill me in?

Call Cal Housing: 510-642-4108
Just mention that you're an FPF student asking for your lottery number (you should have your CalNet ID number ready).
That number never bears good news for me. #_#; I hope there's better luck for you!
