Ask vicissitudes: Spring Admits (FAQ included)

oh i forgot to mention that I’m taking AP Calculus AB, does that make a difference between Math 1a and math 16a?

And does integrative bio need to be taken before bio?

I’m selecting my FPF courses for this coming fall. I’m undeclared at Letters & Science but am planning to take the pre-med route. My SAT I scores are: reading-620, Math-680, Writing- 690. AP scores are: Bio- 5, World-4, US -5, Lang & Comp- 4. I am currently taking Calc AB and expect to pass–if not, i will take it over summer break at a CC. With all that considered, what would be a favorable course load at FPF this fall?

here is what i have in mind:

English R1B (4 units)
Math 1b (4 units)
EPS 80 (2 units–Physical Sci Breadth)
History 7B (4 units–Historical Studies breadth & American Cultures Req)

does that look like an easy to handle load? i don’t want to stress during my 1st semester. Also, are there certain classes or teachers that are very popular at FPF? any insight from those who have already experienced FPF will be greatly appreciated. thanks.

no to EPS 80, you don’t need to worry of physical sci breadth as Chemistry 1A will cover that.

You will need Math 1A-B, 1B-53 or 16A-B if you are premed, take Math 16A (or 1A if your intended major requires specifically 1A).

Anthro 1 with Richards for Social, Behavior Sciences is good. Philos 2 with van Munching is good too.

I’m currently taking Calculus through Cal State Fullerton. Anyone know if this would be transferable to Berkeley and I could just not take a FPF math class? … that would be wonderful…

hey! my friend tried to reserve a spot in the fall extension program but the program was already full, i was wondering what are his chances of getting into the program? and when do they usually let the waitlisted students know if they have gotten into the program or not?

Anyone knows how the process goes to petition for a Math 53/54 (not sure which one I want to take first, prob 54…seeing that I do need a break from 3 years of Calculus).

For now I’m planning on doing business and use econ as my backup. I’m a FPF student so if anyone can tell me how these classes are, that’ll be great. Thanks:

Math 1A (AP Calc AB -5, is this class too easy or is it okay since I’ve been told Haas does not care which math course you take… and whats the difference between 1A and 1B?)

Anthro 1 (Opinions?)

Is English 1A offered in FPF? I have yet to pass with any of the pre-requisites and I will be taking AP Lit in May + the AWPE in May too.

I’m not exactly sure how to structure my class selection, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Take 16A instead, Haas does not give a care between 1A and 16A.
Anthro 1 with Richards, great class; it is the best Anthro 1 class in all of Berkeley.

Cool, Also, is there a way to see which teacher is teaching which class? Cause I afraid I’ll sign up for a supposed “easy” class (like antro w/ Richard) and end up with an extremely difficult teacher.

He is the only one who ever teaches the class. The FPF schedule of classes should have him down as the professor

Is there a link for that? I only have the filling out form for FPF (and it shows only lecture, discussion section stuff)

@HelloALL

[Fall 2009 Course Schedule - Fall Program for Freshmen (FPF)](http://www.unex.berkeley.edu/fpf/coursesched.html)

Here is the link with all the avail. courses, the time slot, the teachers (some are still TBD). Then the rest, you can visit ratemyprofessor.com for more information.

are the TBD professors totally random? Or they usually the same ones from past years?

Also, do you guys recommend taking English 1A and a math course 1st semester (FPF) assuming I pass the AWPE or AP Lit + Comp exam with a 3 or higher? With 8 units for math and English, it doesn’t leave much room for breadth courses. Thanks.

I submitted my course selection form about a week and a half ago, but the checkbox in my “next steps” section still isn’t checked off yet. Should I send it again, call them about it, or just wait?

I’m also curious: is Rhetoric hard? How’s the professor? And what kind of stuff is taught?

hi i was wondering, i signed up for housing (phase 1) but the checkbox in my checklist is still unchecked, and i was wondering if that was only because phase 2 wasn’t complete?

also in my application, it says “applying for resident hall 09-10 as continuing UG LD.” um…is it supposed to say that? i thought it’d say something like, “as FPF student” or something…should I be worried?

I got into spring by appeal, i suspect that i am the bottom of the waitlist for FPF.

im probably not gonna get into FPF am i?
havent heard since emailing FPF my name and ID number…

Hello,
I’m currently considering going the pre-business track, does this schedule sound alright for my first semester at FPF?
Math 16A-B
R&C (still have to find out if I’m exempt from second part)
Anthro 3AC
Geography

hi… i recently got off of the waitlist for fpf, so now i need to decide on my classes…how is this for my first semester at fpf:

English R1A (might test out, if so R1B…and if i test out of both (by IB test)…then backup would be psychology 1)
Math 16A
History 7B
Anthropology 1 (or psychology 1 …which would be better to take?)

Please help! I didn’t know I would get off of the waitlist, so I don’t know much about the classes…would this schedule be ok?..i’m planning on integrative bio as my major (pre-med)

THANK YOU!!

j31, sounds good
