Ask vicissitudes: Spring Admits (FAQ included)

You could always take English R1A or R1B if you haven't APed out of those. If you can AP out of Math 1B I think you can petition to take Math 53 on-campus. There's also the AC requirement that you'll have to take sooner or later so get that out of the way. Or, just take a class in a subject that seems interesting to you. Not every class you take has to go towards something.

My AB calculus score from last year will clear me from math 16 which i need for my Integ Bio major. My AP biology score will also clear me from bio 1a/1b which I need for my major. If it weren't for the fact that I want to do double major in South and Southeast Asian Studies and a Geology minor I would go back and do them

I will need to pass the AP Lit&Comp. with a 5 to bypass English R1B. I don't know if I can get a 5 this May when I take the exam though... so I assume I will just pick English R1B as a class and then perhaps try to drop it if I do indeed get a 5 on the AP Lit&Comp.

Looking at possible classes that I can take is starting to confuse me. I'm not used to the timetables for lectures/discussions. When they say Discussion 1, Discussion 2, etc for Math 1A are those on different days/weeks? Maybe this is simple and I'm just not thinking straight. Any help would be appreciated.

<a href="http://www.unex.berkeley.edu/fpf/coursesched.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.unex.berkeley.edu/fpf/coursesched.html</a></p>

I got a 710 on the math section of my SAT I. That means I pass the QR req right? Also, I've taken 3+ years of a foreign language (of course, with more than a C-), so I pass the foreign language req. So bascially, all I have to do is fulfill my RC and breadth requirements right? I also got an 800 on the writing section of the SAT I's so that means I'm going to at the least be taking College Writing/Rhetoric 1A.

So far I have 4 credits to do at FPF. That apparently leaves eight more credits? So I should take one RC fulfilling course and two breadth req classes? Also, I'm going to major in Classics/Linguistics, so I could potentially never take another math class in my whole life if I'm looking at this right...

What about those who might not think they're quite ready to take on the vastness of Berkeley and instead opt for Spring semester? Is it possible to switch from fall to spring semester and take transferrable GEs to Berkeley?

Can we trade places? :-p

hiii this is my first post :) because i need help!! lol. i got accepted in spring 2008 (very happy since berkeley is my #1 choice) and i REALLY want to do the fall extension program. and almost everyone is telling me to do it, including a junior from cal and my friend who was in the program last year....and my sister who is a senior at cal. the only thing that is stopping me is my dad. he is not letting me because of the cost...and i dont know what to do! i REALLY do not want to attend a community college...im actually kind of scared of going to berkeley in spring not knowing anyone while everyone already knows each other. and also the transition is scaring me (my sister already transferred from sac city to berkeley after 2 years and so my dad said "your sister is graduating this year so youll be fine....ugh.) i told him i was going to try to get a job in the summer and he said ...even so, i would not be able to cover the costs. and that i should think of them more than myself. we didnt get any financial aid which suuucks because we're under average....but, oh well.

i would really love to attend the program. i was...kind of sad that i didnt get in fall. but this has made me..ahh! over the top!!

what do i doooooo!! someone help! lol

Okay let's take a look at Math 1A:

Lecture 1
M/W/F
8-9 am
Cherkassky
106 ABSW

Discussion 1
M/W/F
9-10 am
Cherkassky
103 ABSW

Discussion 2
M/W/F
10-11 am
Cherkassky
103 ABSW

Discussion 3
M/W/F
11 am-12 pm
Cherkassky
103 ABSW

This means this lecture is on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 8am - 9am. The first discussion section is on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, from 9am - 10am. Same goes for the second and third discussion sections. You sign up for the lecture and one of the corresponding discussion sections. So, for example, it looks like this lecture along with discussion section 1 would work well because you have discussion right after. Or, discussion section 2 gives you time for breakfast between lecture and discussion.

Bingo. Also if you get at least a 680 on SAT I verbal you can go into English R1A I believe. In my opinion College Writing is not a good class.

Well, 9 more. You need a minimum of 13 units. You could take English R1A, two breadth, and an AC class or something. Maybe a Classics class to get a feel for your intended major. Or, just take a course in something you've never taken before, but sounds interesting. Freshman year is a great time to explore. Anyway, yeah you probably don't have to take another math class again, but you're missing out.

Uhh......I've honestly never heard this one before. Just start easy and take 13-14 units, and mix it up. Obviously don't start off with 3 or 4 tech/science classes. Maybe three 4-unit classes and a 1-unit seminar/DeCal or something. Berkeley is really as easy or as hard as you make it. 13 units is very manageable unless you're taking all engineering classes or something.

cathersx3: I would also highly recommend that you attend FPF over a community college. The cost of attending FPF is actually about the same as attending Berkeley in the fall, so if your family would have paid for the fall semester had you been a fall admit, I don't see why they're unwilling to pay now. FPF is $4,000 and dorms are around $5,000 a semester for a triple and $6,000 a semester for a double (this includes food). So at $9,000 it's really pretty affordable for college. You can also take a light amount of work in FPF and work during the fall semester part time. Some more ways of cutting down costs are: buying textbooks used online at amazon.com or half.com, living in a triple instead of a double, or commuting (I don't recommend that though). Anyway, just keep talking to him and try to get your other family members/family friends to talk to him too. Worse comes to worst, you'll go to CC for a semester and be at Berkeley for 7 which still isn't bad at all.

Thanks a lot! You've been a great help. I've emailed FRF with questions before and all they tell me to do is to got to Cal Day and get more information.

Do you know anythign about the summer school for freshman program? I REALLY REALLY want to take Republican Prose over the summer (this is something I'd actually enjoy) but it's not under the A list or B list of classes that I can take in the summer program created for freshmen- the one that offers housing etc.

I know I have to take something from list A, but can I have a second class outside of list A or B?

I think i may go to a CC to save money.
I was admitted under the college of Letters and Science. Do you know what general ed classes I have to take ? If possible, i want to get math done with. Is there a link anywhere..i can't find it.
my major is psychology and i got a "3" on the AP english language exam.

thanks!

If you got a 680 on the math section of the SAT or something, you dont take QR (ie, math).

Hmm yeah I don't think they offer that class since it's not on either list A or B. Sorry. Personally I think you should just relax over the summer and just start college in the fall.

Okay, so you are in the College of Letters and Sciences. Here's what you're looking for:

<a href="http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirements/lsreq.html%5B/url%5D">http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/requirements/lsreq.html</a></p>

Let me just briefly go over what you need:

Reading and Composition

You may also notice that you have to fulfill the entry college writing requirement before being able to fulfill the R&C requirement, but your 3 in AP Language covers the entry college writing requirement.

The second requirement you want to finish is the Qualitative Reasoning requirement, which is essentially math. The second link on the page that I linked tells you the requirements. You probably fulfilled this but if not then just take a CC course that fulfills it.

The third requirement that's good to get out of the way is the foreign language requirement. Most students took at least 3 years of foreign language in high school so they got it out of the way. If you haven't fulfilled this, just take a CC course that fulfills it.

Now for the breadth requirement. The website says "Note for transfer students: This requirement may be met by Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) or UC Reciprocity." Uhh...I have no idea what this means.

Here are the pre-reqs for the psychology major, so if you want to get math done with, looks like statistics is a good class to take:

<a href="http://psychology.berkeley.edu/undergrad/about.html%5B/url%5D">http://psychology.berkeley.edu/undergrad/about.html</a></p>

so i applied to the fall extension program and about to apply for housing. do i apply for fall extension program housing right now or do i wait til get accepted into the program? should i apply to spring as well right now?

is it possible to apply for housing now? I tried looking but I don't think it's available.

vicissitudes: thanks for your input :)

my dad said that if i had gotten accepted into fall, then he would have "no choice but to pay" but since there is a choice, then he wants to go to a community college instead.

just wondering, do all the community colleges have all the classes that have credits that will transfer over to berkeley? (sorry weird wording...im out of it right now) or umm...will there be classes that wont be available at the ccs that i need..?

Oh well that sounds pretty lame. Anyway, I briefly covered some requirements you can fulfill at a CC in my post above. Any CC should have classes that cover R&C requirement, QR requirement, and most breadth/major requirements.

vicissitudes, thanks so much for your help...

one last question: how many classes do you recommend taking at CC?
i think i want to change my major from psychology to something else..so i will be just taking general requirements

You're very welcome. :) CC is actually pretty nice for procrastination on real work.

Anyway, regarding your question, take it easy at the CC. I would go with 3-4 classes. You could always take an extra class and then drop the class you like the least.
