I'm a freshmen in Stern, feel free to ask me questions.

how hard is the curve? What do you have to do to get a 3.5 or better? How competitive is stern? do you still have time to have a good social life? rank the frosh dorms too-thanx

Freshmen year, the "stern curve" is non-existant. You take mostly MAP or intro classes, in which almost everyone gets a B or higher... The curve doesn't come into play till your major classes, which you only have 4. Supposedly, 10% get A's and 10% get A-'s in those classes, but I've also heard it depends on the teacher. I got a 3.43 first semester and am goign to break 3.5 this semester, and I did almost no work. I go out and drink 3 nites a week, play poker almost every night. I study maybe an hour a week, and do homework 2 hours a week total (except when I have to write an essay, which adds a couple more hours). Some of my other friends in Stern spend 3-4 hours a day studying, doing all the readings, etc...so it really depends on the person. Freshmen dorms I would suggest Hayden and Uhall (If you're not ED you wont get your choice anyways), brittany if you want to save money ( big rooms but no AC). In stern its really not that competitive yet, everyone really helps each other and is nice, and its been the antithesis of the rumors I have heard. Granted most of the classes are on some sort of curve, so you are competitng, but no one tries to make people do worse or w/e.

edit: Lets me expand on some curves and grading ive experienced. in computer based systems, my teacher said about 40% will get A's. In econ 1 and 2 30% get A's or A-'s (will vary slightly with teacher), with almost everyone getting atleast an A. Calculus is done on a standard deviation curve, with the median grade of B. WTE most people get B - A- (not done on a curve though).World Cultures/con west I'd say average grade is about a B or even B+. I didn't have to take a science class. Except for WTE2 and computer based systems, you're also competiting with CAS kids (though it seems there making more and more stern-specific classes freshmen year it seems, so it may be different for you), and not to be stereotypical, but Stern kids generally are at the higher end of the spectrum grade wise.

I go to a mexican university, ITESM a.k.a Tec de Monterrey, I have only been here one semester and I plan on studying here 1 more year and later transfer to NYU for the fall 2007 semester. Do you know any transfer students? Do you have any advice for me? I will break a 3.9 or 3.8 GPA this semester and I'm planning on joining the Marketing Student Society next year, I'm a mexican and I don't need financial aid, oh and also Tec de Monterrey and Stern have like an exchange program going on so they know that it is a really good school, possibly the best business school in Latin America and I'm also trying to match most of my courses with Stern's. Anyway, any advice?

Did you like "Writing the Essay"?

carolina...Stern has maybe 10 spanish and black people total in my class, no exaggeration, so your ethnicity will help ALOT... Transferring into Stern is sometimes very difficult with very small open spots and alot of applicants, but with that GPA and such I'd say you have a great chance. Just go to the website and maybe call the office to see what classes they want you to take (having certain classes under your belt helps transferring alot)

merumerume...i hate it, check out what I said in the WTE thread a few topics down.

Thanks, you've really given some confidence, I'm just worried that I don't really have that many extracurriculars, just an internship and the marketing student society, but I've heard NYU cares more about like numbers, grades and such, is it true? what do you think?

does stern have any type of an orientation prior to welcome week?

How is NYC.. I know what a dumb question, but how do you like it? Is it really distracting in terms of studying and stuff when you have soo many other options on what to do? Also, Are you from NYC or any of the cities nearby?

I don't go to NYU, but I've lived here my whole life. It's amazing. You can PM me with any questions about the city if you want.

How hard is it to break into Scholars freshman year? I heard they don't kick out the scholars, even when they are below the 3.5 minimum. What did you do so far this year in the program? thanks

Question on housing.... What did you hear about these dorms, Cliff Street, Water Street, Lafayette, and 26th street. I am a trasnfer student and i was just wondering your opinions for sophomore housing about these dorms. Also, do you think there distances are that far to Washington Square? Where are you living next year? What have you heard about the school of social work, I'm sorry i know your in Stern but do you know anyone in that school?

Carolina..intern is good, but definately join some clubs (specifically business related and charity ones) next year to pad the app.

superman...kinda, you have a one day thing in june, that is fun... you get to ask questions to current students (I wouldv't been there, but I got rejected in last rounds of interviews :( ) and learn a little about nyu, classes, and the city...but you still have to go through a 5 day orientation during welcome week though.

faithful...I love it... but you're going to need a $100 a week to spend to properly enjoy it (i gotta work like hell again this sumer hah). I also tend to go to bars and clubs and such alot, so if you don't enjoy that, you might enjoy it less, though theres plenty else to do. It is distarcting, I usually don't get to homework until midnight, but I also play poker almost every day, and other things...thats not really nyc specific. My major hatred of the city is all the drug dealers in WSP, and homeless peopel constantly asking you for money (and occasionally getting confrontational) but thats not so big. But ya its fairly distracting, and don't expect to be doing any homework thursday friday or saturday night...though thats probably a good thing, since your suppose to have fun in college. (I maintained a 3.5 in stern, and i screwed around much more than you probably will) I'm from suffolk county in long island, where there is NOTHING to do. makes me appreciate the city even more, and even more glad I didn't go to a school in the middle of nowhere like Cornell.

Legionare, they didn't let me into scholars before I applied (I don't know any ED'ers they let in, though they gave me a $20k Stern Scholarship o.O) You need a 3.7 to break into it and some clubs and such, I have a few friends applying, I didn't hit 3.7. I'd say its fairly hard, to get a 3.7 or higher in stern, you really need to sacrifice your social life alot. Also even if you hit 3.7 you aren't necessarily in, I had a friend with 3.9 who didn't get in. They don't want many people in it, its mostly to persuade Rd'ers to go to nyu above ivies imo. Once your in, you need to maintain 3.5, if you miss it, you will be given one semester to get it back up. I heard by graduation theres maybe a dozen people in it, not sure if this is true. What do they do? not sure, but I think they get more connections with alumni and went somewhere over spring break.

Luckycharm. 26th street is the worse but cheapest and about 30 minute walk. Lafayette is generally the second least liked and also about 30 minute walk. Water is huge but really far away (45 minute walk), but people generally like it. Not realy sure about cliff. Of course subway and NYU busing may be faster, not really sure, since i got a Union Square dorm :-D

Stern sure is a cool sounding name for a school.

Do people think of you differently because you go to Stern? I'm not really talking about employers or your grandmother (Who i'm sure is very proud), but like other students... and if ya... does it bother you?

Where geographically are the buildings where Stern students take their courses? I have a map of all of NYU's buildings around WSP and union square so street names and stuff are cool. (Just something i wanna know for housing among other things)

What kinda laptops do Stern guys sport? Would you by any chance have those IBM thinkpads like those commericals heh. But seriously, do u need laptops for presentations? Multimedia? Or just a tank.

Coincidentally, Mattistotle, your situation sounds surprisngly surprisingly similar to my situation (Cept i'll be a freshman in the fall). I can't see myself doing much more work than you, so i'm hoping i'll get by in a similar fashion. thx in advance, GL with everything!

Do people think of you differently? Yeah. Be ready to field questions about "are you required to wear a suit to class" and **** like that. Admittedly, I'd say Stern kids are probably generally a little more highstrung, etc (I mean, look at this board XD) but I've found most people to be pretty chill. Nevertheless, people will still probably be like "oh, you're from Stern? you must do hw all the time and wear suits and be boring", but that's just 'cause they don't know you :D It's annoying, but like I said, usually out of ignorance. If they're still stereotyping after getting to know you, then who wants to know them?

I will say, though, that NYU generally has some problems with people from one school stereotyping schools.

Stern students take most of their Stern classes in Tisch Hall - it's right on 4th St, so it's not far. Other classes... they could be anywhere.

Uh, I wouldn't worry about the laptop. Maybe one person brings a laptop to class. We've got computers & projectors in every room, so usually people just email presentations to themselves and then open it up. You definitely don't need a laptop for class (unless you're doing IS) unless you want to logon during class and slack off :P

I think freshman year, 3.5 shouldn't be too hard unless you're really having problems adjusting / slacking off hardcore. Sophomore year isn't too bad either, especially if you study abroad. Junior year is a ***** and a half though.

custum, try not to party too much...alot of people have royally screwed up their gpa. Some poeple look down to sternies and think we are money hungry and souless, other people think we are smart and good with money, really depends, but no ones not going to/going to be your friend because you are a sternie. most stern classes are in tisch hall, though classes can be anywhere. Get a PC or you'll run into compatibility problems

just to clarify some of youkos thingies...no one wears suits to class unless they have come from work or internships, most are really down to earth, things get exaggerated. (though i heard there is a class we are required to dress up to, not sure though). We have the least amount of hw, atleast freshmen year also, so we can have a nice answer to that question :-D In most of my classes a quarter of student bring there laptops...and play partypoker.

You're not required to dress up for any class, unless you've got a big presentation, but it's usually not a requirement... just custom :D

A custom to "dress up" eh? I"ve heard at some other places they'll dress up all the time. ANyways..... good to know, cuz i don't particularly like wearing a suit.

What kind of compatibility problems are there with macs, any specific details or cases? I prefer paradise poker or party poker personally, but i don't mind converting. harharhar.

When your presenting a group project, its generally smart to dress up, it makes you seem more professional, especially if its a business presentation. you dont HAVE to, but your group will probably want you to so you can possibly get a higher grader, its really a non-issue though.

macs suck. They cost twice as much for half the stuff...if your not a complete moron you wont get a virus. forget everything else people say...the specs of mac are less than comparable pc's by alot. I have a sony vaio for $1250 that can out perform $2000 Macs. There just not made good, always break (I think half my friends had to get a new keyboard) and since they lack the size of PC market, they cant enjoy the same economies of scale, so thus cost more to produce. Macs can dual boot nowadays since they transferred to ibm architecture...but then they get the same viruses...which elimnates the point of macs since they are more expensive for comprable performance and break easier . My PC has never crashed nor gotten a virus and i abuse the heck out of it, so people that claim that are wrong.

If I dress nicely, not with a suit but with like dress pants and blazers and ****, would I look out of place and weird?
