Asking about Interior Design Master

Hi, I want to master in Interior Design but don't know what schools are good?
Do they require interior design or art major in the undergraduate?
How's the future of this field?
How to prepare for the application?

Thank you very much!

I’m not aware of any specific masters degree programs in interior design. All of the interior designers that I know have just an associate degree (2 year) or bachelors degree (4 year).

However, a good starting place for you might be the ASID website, which has a great deal of info on the profession. (ASID is the professional society for interior designers.) Here’s the link:

The ASID website also has some general advice about selecting a school and has a link to CIDA (formerly FIDER), which is a voluntary accreditation program for interior design schools. CIDA only accredits 2-year and 4-year programs, but perhaps you could use that list as a starting point to research whether or not any of those schools offer a masters program.

Worried_Mom, Thank you for your reply, it is very helpful.

RISD M. Interior Architecture (MIA)…broad approach encompasses interior design

A great [interior design school](http://www.schoolofinteriordesign.org) where you could take your MA is at Sheffield School of Interior Design. They have one of the oldest and highly reputed design schools in New York, and that says a lot.

[Sheffield School - Sheffield Complete Course in Interior Design - Course Description](http://sheffield.edu/htmlsrc/interior-design-course.html?code=D301)

The requirement for interior design courses is to have a portfolio. Without it, there’s a great chance that you won’t get accepted. However, if you really want to take up design, then I suggest you start out small first and try out crash courses and workshops in which you can develop your creativity and craft in design.

Aurora, be very careful about attending a for-profit school like Sheffield School. It may well fit your needs, but there are some down sides you should be aware of. It is not a college/university and will NOT give you a masters degree. Sheffield is a trade school that will give you only a “certificate of completion.”

ASID, the professional society for interior designers, says this:

I’m looking to do the same thing!! RISD has a Masters in Interior Architecture, Pratt has a masters in Interior Design, as does the New York School of Interior Design. The academy of art in san francisco also has a masters program for interior architecture. But I get a lump in my throat whenever I look at the cost of the programs mentioned above. Interior Designers don’t make a ton of money, but those top notch programs are very expensive. Still trying to find out if they really do give you an edge.
