I am taking a course at my local college and I want to ask the professor of my class for a recommendation - how should I go about doing this?

Thanks!

1) Do it in person. It can be after class or before class or during a special employment

2) Start off with "I really enjoyed your class..." and go from there cite any examples of activities you think helped your professor get to know you

3) Say 'please'. I would really appreciate it if... I was hoping... etc etc Writing a recommendation is a time commitment for this person

4) Have everything with you! The forms the addressed and stamped envelope in addition to information about deadlines. The earlier you give him/her the necessary items the sooner the recommendation can be in the mail.

5) If it doesn't work out, it doesn't work out. There is always the possibility that he/she will say no. Be gracious and thank him/her for his/her time.

*How long/significant has this class been for you? Is it small enough that the professor knows your name? If not, don't ask. It is much better to get a recommendation from a teacher who has taught you for a while and knows you well.

I couldn't have said it better myself. The perfect way to go about asking is exactly the way ses described.

Thanks guys -- just one more thing

I think that my teaching assistant knows me MUCH better than my professor ... should I ask him instead?

be bombastic

bump *

so should I ask my teaching assistant?

You can talk to the TA about it, but the rec should be written by the professor. Ask, "Could you write me a strong recommendation to College X?" That way, if the answer is no, you have both saved face.

If the answer is "yes," give him or her a written request for the recommendation, including the due date, and mention the TA and any other pertinent information about your involvement with the course.
