Asking for Help From a Teacher You Don't Ever Plan on Taking a Class With

I’m self-studying AP Enviro, since I’m interested in the field and the exam is considered easy I figured I should take it as a sophomore. The Enviro teacher at my school is really good and I really wish I could take it, but it’s a double period and considered ‘easy’, so I decided it wasn’t worth the time. My art teacher actually mentioned that his test scores were excellent last year, even though he is a newly minted teacher.

Even though I’m not taking his class, I still want to talk to him for help. He’s pretty young and ‘cool’ amongst those taking his classes, plus I’m not sure if I’m fully understanding the material. However, I don’t want to offend him by accidentally mentioning that Enviro is considered am easy exam, or even really, really subtly implying that it is by saying I want to take it right now, as a sophomore, instead of as a junior or senior, which all of his current students are.

So should I talk to him? If so, how do I do it without somehow belittling the subject he teaches?

Seriously it is not big of a deal to just talk to a teacher. Some teachers may be busy and are not able to help you extensively, others are more free and can offer you some advice. But either way, you can definitely get something out of him if you talk to him, whether it’s test and study advice or even asking him to help you prepare for the AP exam if you see that he is not very busy. I have met a teacher when I transferred to a new school in my sophomore year. I have never taken his class, but I would always go to his class and ask for help with math. He never complains about the fact that I am not his student, but still come to see him. So just go and talk to your teacher. I bet he would love to help you!

Okay, great! I’m kind of scared that he’ll think it’s weird Imm asking him only a few months from exam dates, but I’m gonna go for it!
