Asking for more aid from a school?

Hi everyone,

I recently was accepted to 2 schools, both of which I like…however, I like one a bit more than the other and it’s also a smaller school, while the former is a bigger public school.

The one I like SLIGHTLY less (the bigger public) has given me grants that add up to $100,000 as well as a loan for $3,500 that I probably wouldn’t even need to accept considering all the grants. The one I like SLIGHTLY more and is a smaller, more personal school (and higher ranked, whatever that’s worth) has given me $2,000 in work study and $5,500 in loans.

I’m kind of disappointed in the “slighty more” school’s financial aid, as I was excited to be accepted, but then find out it would cost so much to go there. My parents are now encouraging me to call the school’s financial aid department, mention that I’ve received a $100,000 from the other school and ask if they might be able to provide more aid to make my attending there more feasible.

There are a number of issues with this though…

To me, this is not the kind of thing I would normally do. I almost feel it’s kinda unethical since they actually did give me financial aid…

The school has many scholarships that I could have applied for that go up to as much as full tuition, but I ended up not doing so because there was a lot going on in my life at the time they were due and I missed the deadline.

It’s not that I don’t like the bigger school that I was accepted to…so I really could take the $100,000 and run and be sort of happy. It’s just, I can’t help but wonder if maybe I’d be happier at this other school.

So now that I’ve explained the situation, I ask the question: Do you guys think it would be alright for me to call and ask if it’s possible to increase the amount in my financial aid package? Or, would this be unethical/a waste of time/not worth bothering?

I'm in a similar situation, but $100,000 is not very believable! :) You could try, doesn't hurt. It's not like they're gonna rescind their offer because u asked for a bit more money
