I got my aid award from Fordham, but it isn't enough for me to go. My EFC was 0 but Fordham would still cost 25,000 a year with what they gave me. I got a scholarship for 8,000 and was expecting more than just a 5,600 aid grant.

Is it possible for me to ask for more aid? How would I go about doing it.

Yes. But its also expected that you take student loans. If you tell them that you and your family simply doesnt have any money towards the gap then they may increase the grant in aid.

Sadly this happens a lot. Its infuriating. And many kids have to go elsewhere (cheaper).

I called first, dynamik, and told them D had received more merit aid from other schools. We don’t qualify for student loans, yet we could never afford to pay full freight, no matter what FAFSA says. Anyway, they said to send an email, but they would make no determinations until all the packages had been allocated – then they would take another look at people asking for more.

Dynamik, unfortunately Fordham does not guarantee to meet 100% demonstrated need. Anecdotally I hear that their aid is very limited, and stats show this to be true. It is not uncommon. We are also 0 EFC and D applied to nine schools because we had to compare packages. D just rec’d her financial aid letter from Ithaca with a $38,000 gap. Luckily she has other options. Did you apply anywhere else? I doubt you would get very far – even if Fordham pitches in more aid it probably won’t be significant enough to close the gap to the point it becomes affordable, unless you receive a Presidential or National Merit scholarship or qualify for HEOP.

What’s the ideal way to ask for more aide? I really want to go, but my parents are pretty much saying no unless I get more aide, since it would still cost about $20,000 for us to pay.

I was told to email the financial aid department with an explanation. Ours is that D received more merit aid from several other schools, including significanlty more from a school in the same league or higher than Fordham.

My3…just checked the portal and merit is up but is the same as estimated :-(. I had contacted my D’s admissions rep who told me to contact financial aid about an appeal once the official aid was listed. SO I sent off an email this morning. Did you receive any kind of email in return that indicated FA had received your request/appeal? I’m worried that I’ve sent something off into cyberspace that will never be seen!

No, kt, I haven’t heard back yet – I sent mine a coule of weeks ago. Now I have another school that has offered my D more merit aid to add to the list, so I will resend the email with the new information, and then call after the holiday break.

my daughter will be a freshman next fall and has been accepted by both Fordham and Binghamton and interested in biology. We have visited both campuses and like each. After some merit money, Fordham is slightly more expensive than Binghamton which offered no merit money. Any thoughts or info about the bio programs at each school would be appreciated. we live on long Island and love the close aspect of Fordham.
