Asking Local Universities' Profs for Internships in CS?

I've heard of people asking their local professors for research internships in the sciences (bio/chem/physics) but I haven't heard of people asking for research in computer science. I'm interested in computer science though so any thoughts on how to go about doing this? Also, what would I say to the professor? I've never done research before and I'm not even sure what research consists of so I can't make a research project proposal... I only have experience through the AP computer science class at my school. Thanks!

Yes, there are certainly computer science research opportunities. Examples of projects are listed at [url=<a href="http://www.cs.princeton.edu/research/projects]Princeton’s">http://www.cs.princeton.edu/research/projects]Princeton’s site](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/summer-programs/1063234-how-apply-independent-research-internships.html), among others.

Thanks, would you happen to know what high school students would do for a professor though? I read through that post and was surprised to see that “research” was more like washing beakers in the science labs. If that’s the case, then what would computer science related “research” be like?

What skills/knowledge do you have to offer a professor? Why do you want to do “research”? Are you just looking for a free educational experience? I’m thinking that your one class, especially if not accompanied by extensive outside experience/knowledge that you won’t have much luck, but you won’t know until you try. Instead of contacting a professor directly at first, contact someone in the department to ask what opportunities there might be and what skills you would need and if there is anyone at the school that you could meet. That way when you talk to the prof, you aren’t clueless.
