Asking professors for letters of recom.

I have a few professors who I'm trying to narrow down to ask to write my letters, but as a general question to anyone who's already done this...is it awkward? I just don't know how to do it, without basically giving a message of "I hate the school you teach at...now can you please write me a rec. so I can get out of here?" How do you do it not seeming so awkward? Any tips, comments, anything...(And, just in case it matters, I go to BC) Thanks.

It really is not that awkward at all ( I thought it was going to be too). The professors I have spoken with have been very understanding of the situation and most of them seem flattered that their opinions matter to you. From my experience the best recommendations definitely have come from the courses with smaller class sizes (if you have any), if not try to get a professor you have spoken with at their office hours a few times. They usually can provide a bit more depth and personalize the letter a lot more.
